Album: Illegal Stills

Artists: Stephen Stills

Released: 1976

Label: Columbia

Producer: Stephen Stills, Don Gehman

Chart Performance: #30 US/#54 UK

RIAA Certification: N/A

Singles: Buyin' Time (Did Not Chart)

Notes: Why am I posting Illegal Stills this week? Because I just picked it up recently and I listened to it this week for the first time and I really enjoyed it. As a matter of fact, I like everything I've ever heard by Mr. Stills. For the most part anyway. And Soldier is a most terrific song if you've never heard it.

It's out of print and runs about 20 bucks used on Amazon, or you can pick up a three album collection of Stills, Illegal Stills and Thoroughfare Gap for around 14 bucks new. That's probably the better option if you are interested.

Notes: Quick post coming at you this week. Thought I would collude with Jon, except he had no input into my choice. Anyway, this is out of print so you would have to get a used copy (around 10 bucks on Amazon after you account for shipping). Or, you could get the Original Album Series which has 4 additional albums (which is what I have) for around 16 dollars.

Notes: No fancy-shmancy notes this week. Just a few words from yours truly. I picked this up in an online purchase recently and popped it into the CD player yesterday. To be completely honest, I assumed I was hearing the album for the first time as I just couldn't remember anything about it. But man, when it started playing, it all came back to me. I owned it at one time because every single song was familiar, and every single song was outstanding. I must have had it on cassette. I just can't tell you how much I enjoyed hearing this again. I will be spinning it again soon. It's just so melodic and perfect to me. That's what I think.

Looks like it's still in print and around 16 dollars on Amazon.

Notes: Electric Warrior is the sixth overall album by the band, but only the second album released under T. Rex. The first four albums were released under the name Tyrannosaurus Rex. The band was formed in 1967 by British singer/songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan and ended after Bolan's death (from a car crash) in 1977. The album became a pivotal release in the glam rock movement and contains the bands only US hit in Bang A Gong (Get It On). The song was a hit once again when The Power Station covered it 1985. The cover art was designed by Hipgnosis.

Singles: Hello, I Love You (#1 US/#15 UK)/The Unknown Soldier (#39 US/Did Not Chart UK)

Notes: Waiting For The Sun is the third studio album by The Doors. Released in 1968, it became The Doors first and only number one album. The lead single was The Unknown Soldier, which broke into the Top 40. It was the second single, Hello, I Love You, that became The Doors second number 1 hit. The song Waiting For The Sun was recorded at this time, but was left off the album. It was later included on the album Morrison Hotel. The solo for Five To One was ripped off by Ace Frehley for his solo on She, which appears on the third Kiss album Dressed To Kill. This statement is strictly my opinion.

You can still find this in print. There is a 40th Anniversary edition with 5 bonus tracks for around 10 dollars or a 50th Anniversary 2 disc edition for around 21 dollars.

Notes: We Can't Dance is the fourteenth studio album for Genesis. This was the last studio album for the band to feature Phil Collins. As a side note, only one additional studio album followed this one. The single I Can't Dance received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals in 1993. The band normally divided lyric writing duties, but Phil Collins wrote the majority of lyrics for this album. Since I Lost You was written by Collins for Eric Clapton, as this was during the time that Clapton lost his young son. The album runs long, as there are two songs that exceed ten minutes in running time.

The CD is still available as an import for 13.99.

Notes: Fragile is the fourth studio album for English progressive rock band Yes. It is the band's first album to feature keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who replaced Tony Kaye in the band. It is also the first album to have a cover featuring the now famous artwork of Roger Dean. The album was originally conceived as a double album that would feature both studio and live tracks. The Roundabout single was an edited version of the song, which runs for almost nine minutes on the album.

Notes: The following is a snippet that I pulled from Wikipedia:

The album was recorded and mixed in two weeks at Atlantic Studios in New York City. Much of its material was premiered live over the preceding months and combines blues, jazz and country music to varying degrees. It includes re-workings of "Trouble No More" and "Don't Want You No More," as well as notable originals such as "Dreams", which highlighted the band's jazz influence, and "Whipping Post", which became a crowd favorite. Although the group was arranged to work with producer Tom Dowd (whose credits included Cream and John Coltrane), he was unavailable, and they instead recorded with house engineer Adrian Barber. The album's artwork was photographed in Macon and surrounding areas.

Yep, I got really lazy this week. The album is still available on CD. You can get the remastered version on Amazon for $11.98.
