Who? The Charlie Daniels Band

When? 2000

Album title? Road Dogs

Allmusic.com review? Yes.

Not since Fire on the Mountain has the Charlie Daniels Band delivered a record so emotionally charged with screaming guitars and real, honest to goodness Southern-style rock & roll. From the opening chords of the ultimate rock-band-on-the-road tune, "Road Dogs," it is obvious that this release is neither a straight gospel recording like Steel Witness nor a country flavored album like Same Old Me. This is Charlie's hottest rocking recording in many years and a breath of clear, fresh air. Not that there was anything wrong with his previous endeavors. Each had its own set of high points and bits of musical genius, but Road Dogs rocks.

"Ain't No Law in California" is an especially memorable rebel yell of a song, with Charlie belting out "Welcome to the wild wild west." "Sidewinder" is more than a little reminiscent of the very best Allman Brothers Band instrumental, featuring triple-lead guitars, overlapping in smooth, tight harmony with all the flavor of a Mexicalli road trip.

At the age of 63, Charlie Daniels has returned to his Southern rock roots and sounds as good as ever. This is one old road dog who isn't even considering curling up on the porch and letting life pass him by. He's rockin,' but it's not in a rocking chair, it's behind a Gibson guitar.

Southern rock quartet Thunder's eponymous debut is a slick, '70s AOR slab of semi-intelligent guitar-heavy rock & roll that sounds like the middle road between interstate Kansas and highway Bad Company. This ten-track collection of radio-ready material isn't any better or worse than much of the mid-level, kind of "proggy" post-boogie rock of the era, and the production and playing is excellent throughout, but there is nothing here that hasn't already appeared on a Styx, Foghat or Little River Band record.

Album title? Death And Progress

Allmusic.com review? Yes.

Despite showing great promise with their awesome debut Lightning to the Nations, New Wave of British Heavy Metal stars Diamond Head apparently "lost the plot", as they say in England, changing direction and churning out a couple of mediocre albums before fading into apparent obscurity. Luckily, their sound influenced many bands and their legend kept increasing after the band had broken up, eventually prompting them into a reunion. 1993's Death & Progress seems to fulfill what Diamond Head failed to achieve ten years earlier: Combine their heavy metal roots and aggression with a more concise, if slightly commercial style of songwriting, resulting in what can be loosely defined as a melodic hard rock album. Nowhere is this new-found balance more apparent and effective than in "Starcrossed (Lovers of the Night)," which opens with a gorgeous melody before climaxing in a virtual thrash-out. Other stand-outs include "Damnation Street" and "Truckin'," while "Run" is simply a phenomenal hard rock single and serves as a great conclusion (?) to an interesting career.

Allmusic.com review? Yes.

During her years with Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie only recorded one album. It was released in 1984, after Mirage had run its course and the band was taking an extended break. Given its release date, it's not surprising that Christine McVie sounds like it could have been recorded during the Mirage sessions -- it's a collection of soft rock/pop and ballads that are pleasantly melodic and ingratiating. Only a handful of cuts, such as the wonderfully catchy, lightly bouncy hit single "Got a Hold on Me," work their way into the memory, but nothing on Christine McVie is anything less than agreeable. The record simply suffers from a rather predictable fate -- it's a little too sweet and laid-back to be consumed in one sitting, and its best songs would have sounded even better if they were balanced by Lindsey Buckingham's insular, paranoid pop genius and Stevie Nicks' hippie-folk mysticism.

Angel's later releases were given over entirely to the sort of pomp and glam excess that made them a virtual spot-on blueprint for '80s hair metal, and their debut certainly has Queen-ish guitar and shrill hair-sprayed aggression in abundance on numbers like "Rock & Rollers." But from the opening notes of "Tower," there's a curious admixture of progressive rock, almost entirely due to Gregg Giuffria's contributions of harpsichords, piano, and Mellotrons. Like many first albums, this one is in some ways more interesting than the more Angelic follow-ups, simply because it shows as much what routes they did not follow as which ones they did.
