Notes: Balls To The Wall was Accept's fifth studio album as well as their best American performing album for many years, up until 2014's Blind Rage. The album was originally released in Europe in late 1983, but wasn't actually released in the US until 1984, to avoid competing with the band's previous album Restless And Wild. There was controversy related to the album cover and a couple of the songs being interpreted as touching on homosexuality. The band members seem to say that the album is about oppressed groups fighting back, be it homosexuals or bikers or any other oppressed group. All of that is open for interpretation by the listener. The single Balls To The Wall has become a metal anthem and has been covered by Fozzy, Amon Amarth, BulletBoys and Puscifer. It has been featured on the TV show Beavis and Butt-head as well as being featured in the Grand Theft Auto series and the Guitar Hero series.

Well, seems as though I was out of commission again last week. But I'm back, for a week at least. Big Country has the spotlight this week. The Crossing, the band's debut from 1983, is the band's third album overall to be featured on Classic Rock Bottom.

I bet you've heard the opening track before. In A Big Country was the band's first and only Top 40 US single. That's kind of hard to believe, but it's true. The album itself made it to number 18 in the US on the strength of that single. Also, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA.

The album is still readily available. You can get a brand new, remastered copy that contains several bonus tracks on Amazon for just under 12 dollars. That's a good deal.

We revisit 1983 this week by featuring Seven And The Ragged Tiger by Duran Duran as the Classic Rock Bottom Album of the Week. The singles from this album were all over the airwaves back in the early 80's, so I'm sure your memory dials it up pretty easily.

The album made it up to number 8 in the US (it was number 1 in the UK). It is certified Double Platinum. Three very successful singles were released from the album. Each of those made the Top 10 in the US (Union of the Snake was #3, New Moon on Monday was #10 and The Reflex was #1).

The album is still available. As a matter of fact, you can pick it up for less than five dollars brand new on Amazon. It was reissued in 2010 with an extra disc of music and a DVD, but that appears to be out of print right now.

This week's Album of the Week comes from 1983. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) is the second studio for the British new wave duo Eurythmics. Of course, as you most likely know, the duo consists of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart.

The album reached the number 15 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, helping the album to become certified Gold by the RIAA. It reached number 3 in the UK. Several singles were released, but the big one was the well known title track. It reached number 1 in the United States and Canada while climbing to number 2 in the UK. Love Is A Stranger was the other Top 40 hit, though it happened in an unconventional way. It was originally released in 1982 and tanked. But it was re-released in 1983 and made it all the way to number 23 in the US.

ZZ Top is a band that has been around a long, long time. Their first studio album was released in 1971 and their most recent release came in 2012. That's over 40 years if you are counting. This week's Album of the Week is ZZ Top's Eliminator from 1983. I feel pretty sure you have heard the hits off of this album.

Eliminator is easily the band's most popular album in terms of sales. It is Diamond certified by the RIAA and it peaked at number 9 in the U.S. That's a bit of a surprise to me, I would have figured it for a higher charting history. Oh, by the way, in case you aren't familiar with the RIAA's certifications, Diamond means that it has sold over 10 million copies in the United States. Pretty impressive.

As far a singles go, Legs landed at number 8, Gimme All Your Lovin' at number 37 and Sharp Dressed Man missed the Top 40 by peaking at number 56, but was all over the radio none the less. Two other singles were released but failed to chart. Those were Got Me Under Pressure and TV Dinners.

You probably remember the videos for this album as well. They were certainly in heavy rotation on MTV and often featured the customized 1933 Ford Coupe that the band has made famous as well as a few lovely ladies.

The album is still available on CD and can be had for a penny under ten bucks on Amazon.

Quick post for you this week. Canadian rock band Loverboy's third album, Keep It Up, was released in June of 1983. It followed the masterpiece Get Lucky. It rose just as high on the US charts, reaching number 7. It did not sell quite as much as the band's previous effort, eventually being certified Double Platinum by the RIAA. But it's still a good album.

Singles released were Hot Girls In Love (#11), Queen Of The Broken Hearts (#34) and Strike Zone, which did not chart. Speaking of Strike Zone, it is one of my favorite Loverboy songs. Maybe second behind Take Me To The Top. As far as my overall opinion of the album, I always enjoyed Side A on the cassette, but I never really got into Side B. That didn't really change when I listened to this yesterday.

Anyway, you can pick it up used on Amazon for about ten bucks, or you can pick up a two album CD with Keep It Up and Lovin' Every Minute of It on one disc. That one is what I own, and it runs about twenty bucks.

Billy Idol takes center stage this week in CRB's Album of the Week forum. Back in 1983, Idol released his sophomore effort titled Rebel Yell. You remember it, I'm sure. At least, you remember several songs from it. We'll get to that in a moment.

Rebell Yell was a smash for sure. It hit number 6 on the US chart, which was a 39 spot improvement over his self-titled debut album. To this day it remains the biggest selling album of Idol's career, being certified Double Platinum by the RIAA.

Now, let's get back to those songs you remember. Four singles were released from the album, all being at least moderately successful. Those singles were the title track (#46), Eyes Without A Face (#4), Flesh For Fantasy (#29) and Catch My Fall (#50). Of course, as you also remember, all of videos for these songs received a lot of airplay on MTV. Besides all of these well known songs, I am a big fan of the second track on the album Daytime Drama.

Fun Fact: Idol attended a party in which Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were drinking Rebel Yell whiskey, which sounded like a great song title to Billy.

I turned 17 in 1983. Radio was a huge part of life for me back then. I certainly remember hearing this week's band on the radio. Reach The Beach was the second studio album for the British new wave band The Fixx. Can you remember the two big hits from the album?

If not, you've come to the right place. Reach The Beach was the highest charting album for The Fixx, reaching number 8 in the U.S. It is certified Platinum by the RIAA. Those two big songs I mentioned earlier are One Thing Leads To Another and Saved By Zero. They landed at number 4 and number 20, respectively. You know you've heard 'em.

Now I'll be completely honest with you, while I liked both songs, I never even thought about buying the album. But I saw it in the used CD store a while back and picked it up. Let's go back in time and enjoy Journey's 35 year old offspring, Frontiers. The album was big, reaching the number 2 in the U.S. And at 6 x Platinum, I'd say it sold pretty dang well too.

Four big singles were released. After The Fall (#23), Send Her My Love (#23), Faithfully (#12) and Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) (#8) were all Top 40 hits, and Chain Reaction was a radio hit. That's half of the songs that were on the album.

In my opinion, one of the all time bonehead moves took place at the last minute before the album's release. The songs Ask The Lonely and Only The Young were plucked from the album and replaced by Back Talk and Troubled Child. The two songs that were pulled are truly phenomenal and would go on to be released on the soundtracks of Two Of A Kind and Vision Quest. Ask The Lonely did not chart but Only The Young was a Top 10 hit (#9). Personally, I like the former more than the latter, but they are both excellent. I wonder if the person that made that decision lost his job?

I'm willing to bet that if you are reading this, you have memories, fond or not, of hearing these songs on the radio in 1983 and 1984. And when you hear them today, you still do your best Steve Perry voice. I know I do. Luckily, if you don't already own it, you can pick up the original album with four bonus tracks, including the two tracks mentioned above, for 5 bucks.

In 1983, the English band Yes released their eleventh studio album, entitled 91025. Little did they know that 34 years later, that album would be immortalized on the web pages of Classic Rock Bottom. Yes, all these years later, almost seven years after this site was created, I'm featuring my first Yes album as Album of the Week. You see, I was going to feature Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. But I was sitting on the beach this past weekend and something told me to punch this album up on the old iPod. I did, and it was quite incredible. I listened again that night with my Bose head phones, and the music just jumped off of the hard drive. So I shifted my pick to Yes.

90125 was a very successful album for the band. It topped out at number 5 in the U.S. That's good enough to tie for the third highest charting album in the band's long career. Triple Platinum sales level makes it the best selling studio album for the band. Several singles were released, but Owner of a Lonely Heart was pretty massive. It became the one and only number 1 for the band on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, also topping the U.S. Rock Chart. In addition, Cinema won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

I remember hearing Owner of a Lonely Heart many, many times back in the day, and every time I hear it now I immediately think of the movie The Break-Up. Vaughn and Anniston are great, but John Michael Higgins telling Gary to "come-come with the kick drum" just slays. Also, when listening to it at the beach, the song Changes just blew me away. That is a tremendous song and just begs to be heard on a great set of ear phones. It Can Happen also continues to this day to get a lot of air time on classic rock radio.

I have the regular version of the album which can be had for 5 bucks on Amazon, but there is an expanded version that commands a higher premium as well.

And I also want to thank all the great Facebook folks who played along and used the clue "I recommend a nice set of ear phones...and I'm thinking a handful of digits" to venture a guess. Alex Hunter was the first to come up with the correct answer, but a grand total of 6 folks went with the same guess. My clues must be too easy lately, but either way it's fun, fun, fun.
