Brief Thoughts: I love this album. It is my favorite Tesla album. There isn’t a weak track on it. Killer guitars. Although they had some great individual songs on subsequent albums, they never bettered this full listening experience in my opinion.

Notes: Strong Persuader is the fifth studio album for American blues guitarist and singer Robert Cray. Strong Persuader was Cray's breakthrough and it ranked 42nd on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 80's. It's really just a killer blues/rock album. I thought I had posted it before, but it is nowhere to be found. Maybe it was a previous site whose name I have forgotten.

The Georgia Satellites hit the airwaves pretty hard back in 1986 with this self-titled debut album. Well, at least with one track from it. The album rode the strength of the big number 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit Keep Your Hands To Yourself all the way to the number 5 position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. The album also contained the minor hit (but great song) Battleship Chains. All of this led to a Platinum certification for the album.

I just bought this album for the first time a few weeks ago, and that is what you are listening to, if you are listening. I also picked up a used copy of In The Land of Salvation and Sin on the cheap recently.
This week's Classic Rock Bottom Album of the Week is The Thin Red Line by Canada's Glass Tiger. The album was released 32 years ago and is the band's debut, one of only three albums that they released.

The album performed well in the U.S. and in Canada. It was certified Gold in the former and 4 X Platinum in the latter. It also reached number 27 in the States. A total of five singles were released, with three of those breaking into the Top 40 in the United States and two of those three cracking the US Top 10. Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone) hit number two while Someday topped out at number 7 (I Will Be There was the other Top 40 hit rising to number 34).

Eight years passed between the release of Boston's second and third albums. That's a pretty long time. But it's only been a week since the last CRB AOTW post, and this week's choice is Third Stage by Boston. Released in 1986, the band's third offering was a pretty big deal. It performed well, earning a 4 X Platinum certification from the RIAA and becoming the band's second straight number one album in the US. I mean, 4 million in sales is nothing to sneeze at, even if that does follow a 7 million seller which followed a 17 million seller.

And singles, the band still had singles. Three Top 20 hits were released, including Amanda (#1), We're Ready (#9), and Can'tcha Say (You Believe In Me)/Still In Love (#20).

All of that being the case, I'd say Third Stage was really the beginning of the end for Boston. Although the band remained active, the turnover was high and Boston without Brad Delp's voice has never appealed to me, though I must be truthful and say I've never given it much opportunity to do so.

Anyway, this album is relatively easy to find. Amazon has it used for less than 2 dollars before shipping costs are factored in. It is most definitely worth that and would make a fine addition to your personal collection if you don't already have it.

I've got one you've all been waiting for this week. Especially Jon. Released on August 18, 1986, Slippery When Wet was the first of six number one albums for Bon Jovi. I was a fan of the band's first two albums and I remember being quite excited waiting on the premiere of the video for the first single You Give Love A Bad Name. This was the band's third album and it was the one that put them into the Big Time.

Let's run down the list of accolades for the album. First, as mentioned earlier, it hit number one in the US and it stayed there for 8 weeks. The album sold over 12 million copies in the US, becoming Bon Jovi's only Diamond certified offering. Slippery When Wet was the best selling album of 1987 and is one of the Top 100 best selling albums of all time in the US. As far as singles go, four were released with all but one doing very well. You Give Love A Bad Name and Livin' On A Prayer were both number 1 hits. Wanted Dead Or Alive climbed to number 7, becoming the third Top 10 hit from the album. Never Say Goodbye did not chart in the US.

Face it, the album was huge. It appears to be out of print, which is a surprise, but you can get it for around five bucks used on Amazon. That is if you don't already own it.

Did You Know: The original album cover was scrapped at the last minute due to the fear it may be banned by US record stores.

Did You Know? The two number one songs were written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Desmond Child.

In May of 1986, Peter Gabriel (PG) released his fifth solo album. His previous four solo albums were all self-titled, though they have since earned nicknames. He broke tradition when he titled that fifth album "So". That album is the subject of this week's Album of the Week column.

Some folks claim "So" is PG's best album, although I'm sure that there are plenty of folks that think it was a sellout. It is his best selling album, racking up sales in excess of five million in the US alone. It hit number 2 on the US album charts, but it claimed the top spot in the UK. How 'bout two number 1 singles (Sledgehammer and In Your Eyes) as well as two number 3 singles (Big Time and Red Rain). Sledgehammer featured, as I'm sure most of you remember, in innovative video. It was truly huge as it won 9 awards at the MTv Video Music Awards. It was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. However, Paul Simon's Graceland beat it out.

I'll tell you, I have never been much of a PG fan. For some reason, his solo work has never resonated with me. I remember not caring much for Sledgehammer or Big Time. Time has changed some of that, as this album is now a good listen for me. I had never owned the album until recently. What about you?

This week's Album of the Week is a great one. It's Mechanical Resonance by Tesla. Mechanica Resonance is the band's debut album. It's not the band's best selling album, although it did go Platinum. It's also not the band's highest charting album, although it managed a Top 40 showing at number 32.

How about singles? Three were released. Little Suzi was the one that charted on the Billboard Hot 100, topping out just inside the Top 100 at number 91. In case you don't remember (or maybe you weren't even born yet), the other two singles were Modern Day Cowboy and Gettin' Better. Here's a couple of nuggets:

Cumin' Atcha Live was usually the concert opener (when I saw them in 1987 opening for Def Leppard, we were late getting into the arena but I could hear this song as we were walking in. I believe my friends and I saw them at the Omni in Atlanta).

Modern Day Cowboy is featured in the video game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

I never knew this, but Little Suzi is a cover. The original was Little Suzi's On The Up by Ph.D.

I totally dig this album. Always have, always will. There's not much radio friendly stuff here, but it is all terrific. Tesla was definitely different from all the other bands of the time, even though they were lumped together with the "hair metal" movement. I love their style and hard rock sound. You don't get much better on guitars than Hannon and Skeoch.

But enough about what I think...what do you think?

Side One:

1. EZ Come EZ Go

2. Cumin' Atcha Live

3. Gettin' Better

4. 2 Late 4 Love

5. Rock Me To The Top

6. We're No Good Together

This week's Album of the Week is the second consecutive album from 1986 (last week it was Journey's Raised On Radio). It's Night Songs from Cinderella. A couple of days ago I asked folks to name a great rock album, and this was the first one listed that had not yet been featured in this forum. Thanks go out to Scott Bedgood for helping me pick an album.

I remember this album coming out and really diggin' this band. I liked their music as well as their videos. I also remember thinking that this guy (Keifer) was gonna blow his voice out the way he was singing.
This week we're gonna take a trip back to 1986. Your Album of the Week is Raised On Radio by Journey. This one really does take me back to 86/87, probably because I listened to this cassette a lot.

From what I've read, Perry began to exert control over the band. Ross Valory and Steve Smith were fired. Session musicians were brought in to fill their spots, including Randy Jackson of American Idol fame. Now, the funny thing to me is, this is a great album. I love it and I can't find a bad song on the album. Then both Valory and Smith returned ten years later to reform the classic 80's lineup on the Trial By Fire album. Personally, I think that album is a snooze-fest, and I'd rather listen to the later non-Perry albums than that one.

As far as this one goes, I actually like it from a complete album standpoint more so than Frontiers. But how about you, what did or do you think about Raised On Radio? Share your thoughts with us.
