Not since Fire on the Mountain has the Charlie Daniels Band delivered a record so emotionally charged with screaming guitars and real, honest to goodness Southern-style rock & roll. From the opening chords of the ultimate rock-band-on-the-road tune, "Road Dogs," it is obvious that this release is neither a straight gospel recording like Steel Witness nor a country flavored album like Same Old Me. This is Charlie's hottest rocking recording in many years and a breath of clear, fresh air. Not that there was anything wrong with his previous endeavors. Each had its own set of high points and bits of musical genius, but Road Dogs rocks.

"Ain't No Law in California" is an especially memorable rebel yell of a song, with Charlie belting out "Welcome to the wild wild west." "Sidewinder" is more than a little reminiscent of the very best Allman Brothers Band instrumental, featuring triple-lead guitars, overlapping in smooth, tight harmony with all the flavor of a Mexicalli road trip.

At the age of 63, Charlie Daniels has returned to his Southern rock roots and sounds as good as ever. This is one old road dog who isn't even considering curling up on the porch and letting life pass him by. He's rockin,' but it's not in a rocking chair, it's behind a Gibson guitar.

The fifth album in the series I thought up all by myself is 1980's "Full Moon" from The Charlie Daniels Band and it also happens to be an anniversary album!

This week proved to be a bit of a tough pick since it was an anniversary selection as well as needing to fit into this latest, glorious series. I did have an album all ready to go by a very well-known band, but just wasn't feeling it. I actually had to take some valuable time and pull albums, check the release date and then check on how many were sold compared to the previous release.

Luckily, "Full Moon" gave me that happy feeling and that's what we have. This follows the triple platinum "Million Mile Reflections" which was home to the top ten "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", a song most everyone should know. Of course you might only know the "son of a gun" version instead of the "son of a bitch" recording, but that's your fault.

"Full Moon" was released a year after "Million Mile Reflections" and it kind of fits in with the same pattern as that album, from the album cover to the songs. This album reached #11 on the charts and it is certified platinum which isn't bad, but it's not 3X platinum. Still, it's a worthy followup.

Even though this did reach #5 on the US country chart, it is more rock than country. For those that like country rock, I recommend that you check out other CDB albums like "Fire On The Mountain", "Nightrider", "High Lonesome" and "Midnight Wind". Good country rockin' times, they are!

Hey, finally a decent allmusic.com review for an album in this series:

1980's FULL MOON is probably the most polished and commercial album the Charlie Daniels Band made, in an apparent attempt to follow up the unexpected crossover success of MILLION MILE REFLECTIONS and its hit single "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." "Legend of Wooley Swamp" is almost an exact rewrite of that song, in fact.

While nothing here became as inescapable as "Devil," its slickly commercial sound struck a chord with the faux-country URBAN COWBOY crowd. "Lonesome Boy from Dixie," a rocker about a Civil War soldier, is a highlight, as is the bluesy "No Potion for the Pain" and the tender "Carolina (I Remember You)." The sentiments of the ultra-patriotic "In America" garnered a minor hit sure to be played on country radio stations around the Fourth of July every year.

This week Rjhog has posted an album from The Henry Paul Band who was/is a member of The Outlaws which, for those not paying attention, was the band I posted last week.

WITH ABSOLUTELY NO COLLUSION AT ALL, this week my pick is from The Charlie Daniels Band. Now I'm wondering if next week we will be posting something from the same band or artist. I'm not going to ask, I'm going to let this play out. We'll just have to stay tuned!

The first time I remember hearing The Charlie Daniels Band was "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" on an AM station. I went out and bought the single and played that quite a bit, then got the album. Of course I was shocked when I found out that the AM version of TDWDTG was a "clean" version while the album featured the "dirty" version. I firmly believe listening to the "dirty" version affected my life in all the wrong ways.

So I had "Million Mile Reflection" and got the followup when "Full Moon" a few years later. I can't recall why, but for some reason I didn't like "Full Moon" and that was it for me and The Charlies Daniels Band. Was it TOO country? I don't know!

Many years later I got into a Southern Rock kick and was picking up albums left and right and picked up a greatest hits by Charlie Daniels, found I really liked the tunes. A few years later when "Million Mile Reflection" came out in a remastered version, I picked that up. Great album, for those that have never heard it.

But there was one album that I read about that I absolutely had to have, and that was "Powder Keg", released in 1987. This album supposedly rocked, from what I read, plus a geetar on the cover made me believe that, yes, it DID rock. Of course it was OOP and prices were way to high.

Perseverance paid off! I finally found this for about $8 on 1/23/07 (so sayeth Amazon).

So, does it rock? Yep, it does but there's also some gospel, honky tonky and regular ole country, just what you would expect from The Charlie Daniels Band. Plus, for all you country fans out there, some guy named Ricky Scaggs does harmony vocals on "Juanita".

By the way, "I don't think Jon owns any other Southern Rock other than The Outlaws" is kind of a silly statement, isn't it?

Powder Keg

1. Bogged Down In Love With You
2. Bottom Line
3. Love Pouring Out of Me
4. Saturday Night U.S.A.
5. Dance with Me
6. Powder Keg
7. What She Do to Me
8. Trapped In The City
9. Stay With Me
10. Juanita

Availability: OOP (still?) but a used copy will set you back around $8.50.
