We are all the way up to 1991 in music. Doesn't seem like that was 26 years ago, but it was. This week's pick for Album of the Week is Metallica's self-titled fifth album, also known as The Black Album. It was a huge sellout...or was it? Personally, I don't think so. Personally, I think the word sellout is used by people who like bad music and don't like it when their band makes something that the masses enjoy. But who cares what I think? I don't even care what I think, why should you?

I could tell you a hundred things about this album, but I'll just remind you that it was number one in the U.S. Every Metallica album since has been number one in the U.S. (except for that collaboration with Lou Reed). It also sold a boat load of copies, as it's 16 X Platinum certification proves. The highest charting single was Enter Sandman at number 16.

I'll also tell you that this is the album that introduced me to the band. For a long time, I could not get into their previous material, but I have done so since. I remember riding around in my car with this cranked (I had a very good sounding Bose system at the time).

1. Enter Sandman

2. Sad But True

3. Holier Than Thou

First single "Midnight Mover" is next, and along with the even more melodic "Screaming for a Love-Bite," it places obvious emphasis on hooks and melodies (and proved to be the toughest to stomach for the band's more hardcore fans). But despite another strange detour into jazz territory with the bizarre "Teach Us to Survive," Accept still packed amazing power, heaping on their Teutonic background vocals for the ultraheavy "Dogs on Leads" and gleefully pile-driving their way through relentless moshers like "Up to the Limit" and "Wrong Is Right."

Everything about it feels blown up to epic proportions (indeed, the songs are much longer on average), and the band feels more in control of its direction. You'd never know it by the lyrics, though -- in one way or another, nearly every song on Master of Puppets deals with the fear of powerlessness. Sometimes they're about hypocritical authority (military and religious leaders), sometimes primal, uncontrollable human urges (drugs, insanity, rage), and, in true H.P. Lovecraft fashion, sometimes monsters. Yet by bookending the album with two slices of thrash mayhem ("Battery" and "Damage, Inc."), the band reigns triumphant through sheer force -- of sound, of will, of malice. Some critics have called Master of Puppets the best heavy metal album ever recorded; if it isn't, it certainly comes close.

As a result, bold new efforts like the timeless title track, "A National Acrobat," and "Killing Yourself to Live" positively glistened with a newfound level of finesse and maturity, while remaining largely faithful, aesthetically speaking, to the band's signature compositional style. In fact, their sheer songwriting excellence may even have helped to ease the transition for suspicious older fans left yearning for the rough-hewn, brute strength that had made recent triumphs like Master of Reality and Vol. 4 (really, all their previous albums) such undeniable forces of nature

"The Similitude of a Dream is the Neal Morse Band's masterpiece. Who even knew a prog album could be this good?
"It's hard to believe that 39 years after the band's first album, Cheap Trick could manage an album that rocks as much as this one does. Not because of ability, it just doesn't happen every day. But this is yet another pop masterpiece to add to your collection. Hard rockers and easy, not quite ballads populate the strangely titled album. Too bad real rock music doesn't get played on the radio anymore.
If you thought Kansas was done recording new music, you'd be wrong. If you thought they couldn't record good music with only two original members left, you'd be wrong again. The Prelude Implicit is a terrific slice of prog and features a mighty fine job rendered by lead vocalist Ronnie Platt. Walsh and Livgren may be gone, but hopefully this will not be the last we hear from this current incarnation of the band" - Shenandoah Press

If you are one of the Opeth fans that want to see a full return of those deathly growls, you probably aren't particularly impressed by Sorceress. But quite honestly, everybody else should be. It's a nice continuation of the last three releases by the band. The vocals by Mikael Akerfeldt stand out, as does the band's guitar prowess. Production is top notch as well, and you even get two extra studio tunes and some live tracks on a bonus disc.
