It appears that the mighty Van Halen may soon be back in action as a post yesterday from the vhlinks.com website’s “Forum Frontman” Fudd indicates that Van Halen are recording new music at guitarist Eddie Van Halen‘s 5150 studio and that they may be touring with Michael Anthony for a 40th year anniversary tour.

The following are excerpts from Fudd‘s post on vhlinks.com on December 21, 2016 at 7:22 pm:

“Ok guys. Was waiting on some more info and here’s what I got:

New music has BEEN recorded. It started over a few years ago and continues to this day. The photo of Dave at the cigar shop was very telling. Almost like a plant if you get me. They are recording at 5150 and that Dave and Ed are working together in harmony doing all new material. There is no animosity. Everyone is getting along. A lot of the “fights” and “hate” is extremely exaggerated. Wolf is the bass player for these sessions.

There is a box set/compilation set coming. The Sammy albums are being remastered. That I know. What extra material that is available is sketchy. Ed has the masters of the Sammyalbums. It will be done and distributed by Warner Brothers.

Wolf‘s album is slated to drop in spring of this year. Wolf wants to spread his wings so don’t expect him to be in the band much longer. Wolf is solely responsible for almost everything that has happened. Dave likes Wolf and they get along.

Van Halen will tour in 2018. Mike has been in contact with the band to be back in for 40th anniversary tour. Also, Sammyis not totally out of the picture but I don’t have a lot on that aspect of this equation. This will more than likely be the last we hear from the band. Wolf will be opening.

I didn't realize it, but this was a Billboard 200 number one album. It is certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA. Several singles were released, but the only one to crack the Billboard Hot 100 chart was Can't Stop Lovin' You, which topped out at number 30.

The album was produced by Bruce Fairbairn and features a guest appearance by Steve Lukather on the song Not Enough, where he performs some guitar and backing vocals. The album is still available and can be had for less than 8 dollars on Amazon.

It was like, ‘Now what?’ Because it was all working. Everything was working. We had found our sound, we had a good recording thing going, we had the right agents, you know, all of this stuff was in place.” He tells “Rolling Stone” it’s something that has been on his mind since the group’s previous reunion back in 2006. Walsh explains that five years ago he, Jimmy Fox, and Dale Peters got back together just to see if they “still had it,” adding that they “pretty much did.” After Walsh departed the band (after Barnstorm, he famously went on to join The Eagles), Peters admitted the group never again recaptured the magic they did with James Gang Rides Again. With any luck, that stuff will be back in place again. When teasing the band’s 50th anniversary, Walsh even joked that the band’s most famous song could spawn a great tour name: Funk 50.

Why not see if the most successful lineup in Mac history still has it? I can’t be alone in wanting to hear this…

In August 2016, Fleetwood revealed that while the band has "a huge amount of recorded music", virtually none of it features Stevie Nicks. Buckingham and Christine McVie however, have contributed multiple songs to the new project. Buckingham and Christine McVie officially announced a new album tentatively titled Buckingham McVie. While Mick Fleetwood and John McVie do appear on a few tracks, it will not be considered a part of the Fleetwood Mac canon. Stevie Nicks explained her reluctance to record another album with Fleetwood Mac. "Is it possible that Fleetwood Mac might do another record? I can never tell you yes or no, because I don't know. I honestly don't know. … It's like, do you want to take a chance of going in and setting up in a room for like a year [to record an album] and having a bunch of arguing people? And then not wanting to go on tour because you just spent a year arguing?" She also emphasized the point that people don't buy as many records as they used to. Fleetwood Mac also announced another world tour in 2017

I for one would love to hear him either with Journey or solo, just something! Times a wasting!

In an interview with Classic Rock Presents AOR, released in December 2010, Perry revealed that he had written many new songs and was contemplating his first solo project since 1994. "A little over a year and a half ago, I felt I could maybe come back to it, I have been writing. I have about 50 songs in a little over a year. I never thought I would do it again, but I decided to open up that room and see what I could find. It's been interesting. Some of it sounds familiar, some of it sounds contemporary, some of it you can't put a label on—and I've never been big on labels anyway." Perry is reluctant however to put a timescale on his return. "I'll be honest, I don't really know how to do that, but I can definitely smell a solo project on the horizon. I will be recording some music. In December 2015, Perry announced that he was completing a new album, which he stated was to be released in 2016, but it has yet to materialize…

Or maybe that’s already happening….???

David Lee Roth recently let slip that Van Halen is working on a follow-up to 2012’s ‘A Different Kind of Truth,’ and although he cautioned fans they’d have to wait awhile, it sounds like the band is making real progress. According to a source, rumors of Eddie Van Halen (from Van Halen) working in recording studio are true, with as many as eight songs having been put to tape. “It’s still in the early stages,” “He’s got security on the doors to ensure no-one hears a whisper,” a source said.

This week were looking at songs that killed a bands momentum, or in some cases their career!

Lets start off with a video version of what I'm talking about this week. In the case of Billy Squire's Rock Me Tonite, it wasnt that the song was bad, it was the video.

It also returned him to #1 on the Top Rock Tracks chart in August 1984. Despite its major success, the single is sometimes associated with the end of Squier's career as a singles artist due to the music video, often described as one of the worst ever. Many viewers who saw it thought Squier was gay, or on drugs. It was directed by Kenny Ortega, the third director to be considered for the job. He had offered to make it despite reservations from the record label and Squier's management so MTV could air it as a World Premiere Video on the date Squier and his label had originally promised them. Squier's concert ticket sales immediately suffered, and he later fired his managers. He has accused Ortega of deceiving him and altering his original concept, which Ortega denies.

Heres 4 more...

PLAYLIST --> http://www.podsnack.com/CA69EFD9E8C/a1klo8al

So it was quite surprising when their hot streak came to a screeching halt with the release of 1983's terribly humdrum Power Play. If only this mediocrity could have been blamed on a change of musical direction, new personnel, or another mysterious force of nature, but the album simply lacks good songs and perhaps musical mastermind Myles Goodwyn had simply run out of creative steam. Not that the album is a complete wash-out, as the band manages to pull it together on a few mid-paced rockers like "Anything You want, You got It" and "Enough Is Enough." But even these are performed with muted enthusiasm and most fans will want to give this record a miss.

Following up to one of the biggest selling albums of the decade, Peter Frampton faced a virtually impossible task, made even more difficult by the fact that in the two years since he'd cut any new material, he had evolved musically away from some of the sounds on Frampton Comes Alive. The result was mostly a surprisingly laid-back album steeped in lyricism and craftsmanship, particularly in its use of multiple overdubs even on the harder rocking numbers. From the opening bars of "I'm in You," dominated by the sound of the piano (played by Frampton) and an ARP synthesizer-generated string section, rather than a guitar, it was clear that Frampton was exploring new sides of his music.

And it is true that Van Halen III makes a slight break from his dunderheaded party rock, but that's a difference that only hardcore fans will be able to hear. Less tired but no more inspired than Balance, Van Halen III suffers from the same problems as Hagar-era Van Halen -- limp riffs, weak melodies, and plodding, colorless rhythms. On top of that, there are layers of pretensions, from portentous lyrics to segmented song structures that don't sound all that different from "Poundcake." Evidently, the group wanted to prove that it could still rock more than it wanted to stretch its musical muscle.

"Don't Let It End" almost captures the same endearing qualities as their number one hit, "Babe," did four years earlier, peaking at number six, and the synthesized novelty of "Mr. Roboto" went all the way to number three, accompanied by a lively and rather extravagant Dennis De Young at the helm. It was the song's mechanically spoken chorus and slight disco beat that made it Styx's fifth Top Ten single up to that point, overshadowing the rest of the album's tracks. Pretentious, weakly composed, and rhythmically anemic, songs like "Cold War," "Heavy Metal Poisoning," and "Double Life" couldn't even keep the album's main idea interesting, solidifying the fact that Styx's forte was singles, not conceptual pieces. The saxophone playing from Steve Eison gathers some redemption, cropping up here and there, but even some decent guitar work from Shaw and Young can't save the rest of the album.

Smells Like Teen Spirit blew it away and the stage was set for a decade of down-tuned, mumbling, depressed bands selling us a new version of rock and roll replete with flannel plaid button ups and torn jeans. These so-called "angry" artists may have won the battle of the decade, but did they win the war? Who knows, when you stop and look back it was easy to see why the 70's and 80's Classic Rock sound faded out, they became complacent, and the sound never changed, so it was easy for a band to swoop in take over.

Anyway, back to 1991, what did the final battle cry sound like? And what would happen to our classic rock bands going forward? We'll save that for another SHT list, for now, take off your hats and pay your respects to the death of Classic Rock...

PLAYLIST --> http://www.podsnack.com/CA69EFD9E8C/a1m0gm8i

Ten of the 11 songs on the Unusual Heat CD were written by co-producer Terry Thomas, new singer Johnny Edwards, and band mainstay Mick Jones, and they still had that bombast and brash appeal of the group which once featured so many textures brought to life by the voice of Lou Gramm. The unusual thing about Unusual Heat is that it is actually a good product and quite listenable. "Only Heaven Knows" kicks things off, and it could be the second cousin (or sequel) to Lou Gramm's solo smash from four years earlier, 1987's "Midnight Blue." Edwards is a stylish vocalist, and he, like the multiple replacements for Bad Company's Paul Rodgers, the Guess Who's Burton Cummings, and the Jefferson Starship's Grace Slick, has that tonal quality that can keep the public happy by keeping the sound consistent with what came before.

Backing away from the diversity of OU812, the band turns in some of the most basic, straightforward rock & roll of its career. At times, F.U.C.K. recalls the sleek hard rock of Hagar's early-'80s albums, and it's undeniable that his limited vocal power had a great deal to do with the obvious nature of most of this music. While the band is still tight and professional -- and Eddie Van Halen's guitar work remains impressive -- the songwriting is, by and large, undistinguished, with the anthemic "Right Now" standing out as the most memorable song of the batch, mainly because of its incessant chorus.

These include an amusing rap section in the middle of the title track, a welcome return to instrumentals with "Where's my Thing?," and one of the band's finest songs of the '90s in the gutsy "Dreamline." "Neurotica" is another highlight which lives up to its title, and though their negative subject matter can feel stifling at times, fine tracks like "Bravado," "The Big Wheel," and "Heresy" feature wonderful melodies and arrangements.

Although his health weakened by the '90s, Mercury insisted that the band work on music until the very end; their final album turned out to be 1991's Innuendo. Although it didn't receive the same critical praise as its predecessor, 1989's The Miracle, it was another strong album and global hit (again going gold in the U.S.). With hindsight, the song's lyrics are blatantly autobiographical from Mercury's standpoint, such as the reflective "These Are the Days of Our Lives" and the bold "The Show Must Go On." Also included are a pair of tracks that deal with mankind's inability to live harmoniously (the superb epic title track and "All God's People") and a humorous tribute to Mercury's beloved pet felines ("Delilah"). Innuendo was a fitting way to end one of rock's most successful careers.

Delicate, touching, and extremely poignant, Rafferty blankets all of Night Owl's tracks with a late-night/early-morning earnestness that is highly effective throughout. Although he managed to do just that with 1978's City to City, Night Owl generates a stronger intimacy and a genuine romantic feel through Rafferty's guitar playing and the way in which his lyrics are sung. The sentimental softness of "Days Gone Down," the controlled exuberance in "Get It Right Next Time," and the pathos which is instilled for the lonely wanderer in "Night Owl" all add to the album's solemn yet moving atmosphere. Rafferty continues this mood with tracks such as "Why Won't You Talk to Me," "Family Tree," and "It's Gonna Be a Long Night," giving the traditional singer/songwriter style some enchantment and allure through his vocal subtlety. In the U.K. the album broke into the Top Ten, and in the United States it sold 500,000 copies, earning Rafferty a gold disc. "Night Owl," "Days Gone Down," and "Get It Right Next Time" all cracked the Top 30

Mark Knopfler and co. had established a sound (derived largely from J.J. Cale) of laid-back shuffles and intricate, bluesy guitar playing, and Communiqué provided more examples of it. But there was no track as focused as "Sultans of Swing," even if "Lady Writer" (a lesser singles chart entry on both sides of the Atlantic) nearly duplicated its sound. As a result, Communiqué sold immediately to Dire Straits' established audience, but no more, and it did not fare as well critically as its predecessor or its follow-up.

However, the opening track "Somewhere In America" was a regional hit in the Chicago area, and the song "Youngblood", with its dramatic guitar intro, proved to be something of a blueprint for the band's smash hit of two years later, "Eye of the Tiger". An additional song recorded for the album, "Rockin' into the Night", was rejected by Nevison as "too Southern"; it was given to .38 Special who turned the song into a hit. The original Survivor recording finally became available in 2004 on the compilation Ultimate Survivor. The single "Rebel Girl" was recorded about a year after the album sessions, though the Japanese release of the album on CD includes it as song number six. The 2010 reissue on Rock Candy Records appends the song as a bonus track.

And even though it was a platinum-plus smash, Dynasty marked the beginning of Kiss' unfocused period, which would ultimately end in a nosedive of the band's popularity, as well as Criss and Ace Frehley leaving the band by 1982. In latter-day interviews, the band admitted that they started to listen to outsiders about what direction the music should go around the time of Dynasty. And since small children were a large part of Kiss' audience by 1979 (due to merchandising and the God-awful TV movie Kiss Meets the Phantom), the band began backing away from heavy metal and embracing pop.

First, there's only one cover this time around -- Betty Everett's "You're No Good," surely learned from Linda Ronstadt -- and this feels both heavier and lighter than the debut. Heavier in that this sounds big and powerful, driven by mastodon riffs that aim straight of the gut. Lighter in that there's a nimbleness to the attack, in that there are pop hooks to the best songs, in that the group sounds emboldened by their success so they're swaggering with a confidence that's alluring. If the classic ratio is slightly lighter than on the debut, there are no bad songs and the best moments here -- two bona fide party anthems in "Dance the Night Away" and "Beautiful Girls," songs that embody everything the band was about -- are lighter, funnier than anything on the debut, showcases for both Diamond Dave's knowing shuck and jive and Eddie's phenomenal gift, so natural it seems to just flow out of him. At this point, it's hard not to marvel at these two frontmen, and hard not to be sucked into the vortex of some of the grandest hard rock ever made.

The Eloy in Wells' story have made a new start with the help of the time traveler. In a way, it was a new beginning for the human race. German rock bands in the late 1960s played mainly covers from other bands instead of playing their own compositions. Record deals for German bands were absolutely rare and German bands generally were considered to be second class bands in their own country. At that time it was a strong effort for a German band to come out with only their own compositions. It was a start into an unknown future, and from this point of view, comparable to the human race in Wells' story. That is why I got the idea to name the band 'Eloy'."

Note: As the decade comes to a close it has become very clear that Hard Rock music was in a rut. The commercial/radio/Mtv approved styles of what was getting airplay had really taken hold. So I began to drift a little in my tastes, for several reasons... 1 - I got married, had my first child and was graduating college I didnt have time to pay attention, and 2 - it was easy to disconnect given the state of music. Its no wonder Nirvana was able to take the music world by storm. Looking back however, I did miss on some good stuff, but I think alot of us did ... So I had to build this weeks playlist, not from my 1988 experience, but based on what I know now.

It peaked at No. 5 in the USA, where it became platinum on June 20, 1988. It was also the last Scorpions record to be produced by Dieter Dierks.

The album was the follow-up to the successful Love at First Sting and had some musical differences when compared to its predecessor. The overall feel of the album shows that Scorpions wanted to experiment with some different genres, going to a more radio friendly style and incorporating more synthesized sounds. While there are still some straight hard rock songs, like "Don't Stop at the Top" and "Media Overkill", there are also dance rock songs such as "Walking on the Edge" and "Passion Rules the Game".

"Heatseeker" and "That's the Way I Wanna Rock 'n' Roll" are also featured on AC/DC Live Collector's Edition. "Heatseeker" was a top 20 hit in the UK. The album was re-released in 2003 as part of the AC/DC Remasters series. During the Blow Up Your Video world tour, Malcolm Young decided not to participate in the North American leg, in order to get over an alcohol addiction. Filling in for him was Malcolm and Angus' nephew, Stevie Young, although Malcolm was present on the rest of the tour and in the Blow Up Your Video promotional videos. The album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental in 1989, but lost to Jethro Tull's Crest of a Knave.

Disclaimer #2: I'm on an 80's kick for the next 10 weeks. I'm covering an 80's album from each year of the 80's decade, though not in chronological order. Some of these may be well known to me, some may not be. But they were all pretty big sellers that left a mark. Out of these ten, I actually had to purchase two of them to feature them here. I think Scott and Jon are along for the 80's ride as well, maybe.

Everybody likes Van Halen, right? Except my wife. She hates 'em (likes Van Hagar though). That's okay. I don't make her listen to Van Halen and she doesn't make me listen to Cher. Fair deal. Anyway, this week we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of what we always thought would be the last VH album with Diamond Dave on vocals. That would be 1984. And although I like it, I only rank it around 5 or 6 in my personal Van Halen Top 10.

But it was huge. It had great videos and contained some outstanding songs. It also featured one of the best drum intros I've ever heard. Here are some statistics:

1984 reached number 2 on the Billboard charts.

It is certified Diamond (sales in the U.S. in excess of 10 million copies) by the RIAA.

It contained the bands only number one hit (Jump).

Jump sold over 3 million copies as a single.

Three other singles charted (I'll Wait and Panama reached number 13, while Hot For Teacher topped out at number 56).

The album cover was somewhat controversial as it featured a small child smoking.

So what do you think of the album? I will add that it was released during my senior year of high school. And I certainly remember Jump being played quite a lot. Finally, possibly my favorite video ever is Van Halen's Hot For Teacher. I'll include it below for a little stroll down memory lane. Enjoy.

By 1983, the line-up changed, with Dee (the only original remaining member) now on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, along with new recruits Derry Grehan on lead guitar and Dave Betts on drums. Grehan became the band's primary songwriter, and penned "New Girl Now," which won them an unsigned band contest put on by Toronto radio station Q107.

Various keyboard players and bassists came and left during this time, but on the strength of "New Girl Now," WEA Canada signed the band to the label. Ray Coburn was added as a permanent new member on keyboards as the sessions got underway for the group's debut LP, but the band still had no bass player, so bassist Brian Brackstone was recruited as a session player. Brackstone played on the entire album; bassist Gary Lalonde (formerly with Rose and Toronto) was added to the line-up after the album was completed, and appeared in the album's group photos and played with the band live.

The band's self-titled debut album, produced by Tom Treumuth, was released in June, 1984. It was the band's fourth top 10 album in their native UK, peaking at number 9. At this same time, the band secured a major US record deal with the Geffen label. The Slide It In (1984) album had drawn mixed reviews, the negatives particularly focusing on its "flat" mix. While a personnel change saw the touring band replace Moody with former Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes, plus the return of bassist Neil Murray in place of Hodgkinson, producer David Geffen insisted that the album be remixed for the US release. In addition to the remix, Sykes and Murray re-recorded the lead guitar and bass parts. This revised version of the album had its US release in April 1984. Despite Coverdale's misgivings regarding the lack of edge in these new tracks, Slide It In (1984) just barely missed the US Top 40, and went double platinum there three years later after the release of the band's eighth album

Eddie Van Halen named that studio 5150 (after the Los Angeles police code for "escaped mental patient.") At 5150, Eddie Van Halen composed Van Halen's follow-up to Diver Down - without as much perceived "interference" from Roth or Templeman.
