This week I'm posting my 5th favorite album that I originally posted on Classic Rock Revisited as album of the week. That honor goes to Nazareth's sixth studio album, released in 1975, entitled Hair Of The Dog. This is the band's biggest selling album (2 X Platinum), according to Wikipedia. The U.S. version has a different track listing than the Canadian/European version, with Nazareth's biggest hit (a cover of Love Hurts that reached number 8 in the U.S.) replacing the song Guilty on the aforementioned U.S. version. I don't know if anyone here has the international version with that song Guilty on it, but I sure wouldn't mind hearing it.
Plain and simple, this is a terrific rock album. It's filled with riffs, hooks and the sandpaper/razor blade voice of Dan McCafferty. I just can't pick a song that I would intentionally skip. If you held a gun to my head, I guess I'd skip Love Hurts, but that's only with the threat of bodily harm. And look at that album cover. That's easily one of my all-time favorites. I remember trying to draw it as a kid, and just thinking how positively evil it was/is.
It's still easily available from Amazon if you are interested.
Did You Know: Some say the album title refers to a cure for a hangover (the hair of the dog that bit you), but Dan McCafferty says it's a play on "heir of the dog", which is another way of saying "son of a bitch" (this comes from Wikipedia).
Next Week: I'm starting a series on UK # 1 albums with some royalty.
Side One:
1. Hair Of The Dog
2. Miss Misery
3. Love Hurts
4. Changin' Times
Side Two:
5. Beggars Day
6. Rose In The Heather
7. Whiskey Drinking Woman
8. Please Don't Judas Me

I'll link one up this evening. Honestly, I didn't think anyone had been listening and I thought this would go un-noticed. Glad to see I'm wrong. I'll let you know when it's good to go.
Nazareth are coming to my hometown (That's Roedovre, Copenhagen) the 28th of october, and I might go to the concert.
I've got the version with "Guilty" on it, but it's on vinyl, and I haven't got a record-player any more. It's not that good a track, it's very slow, too slow if you ask me. "Beggars Day" was written by Nils Lofgren, Springsteen's guitarist. I've heard the original version, and it's not as good as this one. Too bad Manny Charlton isn't in the band any more, because I think he was just as importent to the Nazareth-sound as McCafferty. I have always skipped "Please Don't Judas Me".
I have the remastered CD with "Guilty" on the main listing with "Love Hurts" as a bonus track. The remaster sounds awesome. And really to "Please Don't Judas Me"? Wow. I love that song.
Saw Nazareth and Blue Oyster Cult at an outside show at a casino in Henderson, NV about 10 years ago. Good show, even though it was outside at a casino. In NV.
Rjhog's right...he predicted I would like the next two picks, so far he's batting .500. Can he continue? Will he fail? STAY TUNED!
Yes...there is a nice remaster from Salvo with the following track listing:
1. Hair Of The Dog
2. Miss Misery
3. Guilty
3. Changin Times
4. A) Beggars Day B) Rose In The Heather
5. Whiskey Drinkin Woman
6. Please Dont Judas Me
7. Love Hurts (single)
8. My White Bicycle (single)
9. Holy Roller (single)
10. Railroad Boy (b-side of Holy Roller)
11. Hair Of The Dog (BBC live recording)
12. Holy Roller (BBC live recording)
13. Teenage Nervous Breakdown (BBC live recording)
14. This Flight Tonight (BBC live recording)
15. Road Ladies (BBC live recording)
It's a digipack, has a nice essay in the book. The only "issue" is that it's taller than a normal CD so I had to stash it outside my small collection. You can get it from amazon for about $12-15.
