Classic Rock Bottom

In case anyone is interested, the Decibel Geek podcast is quite interesting.  Below is the latest show, part 4 in a series about how bad radio today stinks.  This particular show plays cuts from Motorhead, Kiss, Motley Crue, LA Guns, Van Halen, Tenacious D (NSFW) and Pantera, along with a few others.

They aslo have shows dedicated to particular subjects.  Last week I listened to one about the new Van Halen album, which was recorded before the album was released.  Anyway, below is from the website but if you have an iPod you can find it on iTunes and download current shows as well as older shows.

Episode 20 - Radio Sucks Radio Show 4

You just keep coming back to get your ears blasted and we thank you! Last week's Eric Carr episode really took off and we want to welcome all the new listeners. For the uninitiated, we try to mix things up throughout the month. While we love doing the interviews and have plenty more for the future, we also like to showcase some music as we're doing today.
Corporate radio sucks. That statement is about as simple as saying that the sky is blue or Nickelback is the antithesis to good music. With that said, Aaron Camaro & Chris Czynszak set out each month to play you some deep cuts from rock and metal history that the payola-induced corporate fat cats shudder away from. This is the Radio Sucks Radio Show part 4!
We've got a full slab of great music for you today. We start things off with a Motorhead track from the 'Iron Fist' album followed by a KISS track off 1974's Hotter than Hell.
Our first break is comprised of a flashback commercial featuring an unlikely pairing between two acts; especially when you consider who was opening up for whom.
We segue into some 'Shout at the Devil' era Motley Crue as we discuss the band's recent residency in Las Vegas. We make sure to update everyone on Vinnie Vincent's recent musical output. It's buggin'! After that, we give you a track from the 31st lineup of L.A. Guns, the last one to feature Phil Lewis and Tracii Guns before they decided that two was better than one.
With this week's release of 'A Different Kind of Truth,' Van Halen is front and center on the world's radar (competing with the likes of Snookie and American Idol, wtf). We decided to avoid the lawsuit and play a classic Van Halen cover instead to get you primed for the new one. Trust us, it's worth going out and picking up.
The second break of the show features David Lee Roth extolling the virtues of the Decibel Geek podcast. We also hear from an inanimate object that is near and dear to a former WASP guitarist's heart (and liver).
The next 2 songs feature polar opposite bands but equally enjoyable. One is known for providing levity and humor in their records and their movie. The other was a legend that's music still holds up today against all of the other metal bands that they inspired.
Next up is a band that you've probably never heard of covering a song of another band you've probably never heard of. Exciting right? Aaron really pulled out a gem with this one. Midnight Moses was originally performed by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band but covered beautifully on this track by Spearfish.
Our next break includes Nigel Tufnel explaining why the Decibel Geek podcast is the only show that goes to eleven. We also hear from Mama Cass in her final moments.
We wrap up the show with some bands that each of us dig from the 1990's. Chris spins a track from a band that many of our listeners probably consider rap-metal but there's no doubt that musically this track slams. Go ahead and start writing your hate mail; we can take it. Aaron closes things out with a track from a band that Chris can't stand. In all fairness, Chris has only heard the one track that this band is known for so Aaron decides to expose him to a new slice of said group's catalog. Will Chris dig it? Wait and see.
That's all we got this week. Can you believe we got through all of these show notes and didn't say one thing about the Super Bowl? Dammit!!!

Oh yeah, if you listen, check out the David Lee Roth track during the second break of the show.  It's his vocal track from Running With The Devil.  It's awesome.

Just downloaded and listened to the newest episode today.  It's a really good interview with Eddie Trunk.  They talk about him meeting Peter Criss, his part in getting Ace Frehley back into recording after his departure from Kiss, his book, his organization of a benefit for 9/11 and his work at Megaforce Records as well as how he got there.

Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the kind words! So glad you like the show and hope that you will tune in to future episodes. Rock on!

Thanks Chris.  I really have enjoyed the few episodes I have listened to.  I certainly plan on continuing to listen.  I'm a pretty big Kiss fan myself so your show is right up my alley.   I'd love to get some of your opinions on our threads here at CRB if you have time.  Either way, I'll continue to plug your podcast.

This is on my to do list to listen to tomorrow, this seems to be right up my alley (mostly).

Thanks Jon!

Hey no problem, always great to get new folks here! I listened to the first few minutes and having Motorhead to start off has got my blood pumping!

Ok, took almost 3 hours to get thru this, but I persevered. Conference calls be damned!

Very nice to hear stuff that's mostly off the beaten track, I really like the LA Guns song even though I'm not a big fan of the band at all. This was some heavy stuff!

Motley Crue and Kiss I can take or leave, I did see Motley Crue with Axe and Heaven somewhere in Texas at an outdoor concert at a fair or something. Still have a headband from this concert, should hunt it down....

I have no issue with Rage Against The Machine, if people do, well TOUGH! To me they're much more than rap rock, you gotta sit down and listen to them Very intricate stuff going on in the background.

I was scared with the last band (forget the name since I'm probably too old) with it being a geetar and drums, first thing that came to mind was White Stripes who, IMHOWINEW, plain suck. Thankfully this did not and it actually reminded me of The Offspring, especially the singer.

All in all a fantastic listen, would love to have some more!

Thanks for the detailed review Jon! I'm actually uploading a new Radio Sucks episode this evening that focuses on cover songs as well as a new segment called Defend Your iPod that will have Aaron and I putting each other on trial for some of the more embarrassing things that are on our iPods lol.

We've got some cool interviews coming in the next few weeks as well. Thanks so much for the feedback!

All of the episodes are available via itunes and our website www.dbgeekshow.blogspot.com

There will be a revamp next week of the website that we're very excited to bring to you. Thanks again and rock on!

Embarrassing things on the iPod (or phone in my case)? Yeah, I got me some as well.

Episode 20 - Under Covers

Great episode Chris.  I think all of your picks and Aaron's picks are really good.  But I'll pick a favorite from each of you.  For Aaron, I like the cover of Cold Ethyl by Vince Neil, Mick Mars and Billy Sheehan the best.  This is the best Vince has sounded vocally since Too Fast For Love (my favorite Crue record).  And you guys are right, Mars is really underrated.  Sheehan isn't, he's rated very well and I love his playing here.

For Chris, I'll go with the Anthrax cover of Thin Lizzy.  I think it was called Cowboy Song.  This makes me want to find a compilation with all of their covers.  Maybe they have a b-sides and rarities release.

I also love Ace, so great pick there.  And I love the Primus track with Ozzy, especially the bass playing.  Very cool.

I remember Angel Of The Morning by Juice.  But I don't have it on my ipod.  I do have Duran Duran, The Bee Gees and a few select songs from the Grease soundtrack.   No excuse for those, but I do like 'em.  I also have some Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers, but my excuse there is that it's for my Niece, for whom I keep her iPod updated.  My iPod is a 160g, so I sync my whole library to it, therefore I can't avoid it.  That's a reasonable excuse, right?  By the way, I found absolutely nothing wrong with the song on Aaron's iPod, it sounded quite funny lyrically.

Lastly, this may be a stupid question, but does an iTunes download of your show count for your number of downloads, or is it only the ones downloaded directly from your website?  Just curious.  I'll find you on facebook this evening and I'm gonna give you a glowing review on iTunes as soon as I get the chance.

Thanks for playing the great music.  I have no desire for illegal downloading, but I do hunt for music based on what I hear on shows like The Decibel Geek Podcast.

Oh, I'm sorry, one more thing.  Can this comment be copied somewhere in a forum on your website?  I'm more than happy to spread the word about this show.  I'll also put a link to it on CRB's "friends" page.

Awesome feedback! Thanks so much!

Aaron's pick of Cold Ethyl was a welcome surprise for me as well. Added it to my library.

For your question about downloads, yes, the downloads in iTunes are from the same feed as what is on the site. I think the only outlet that we use that records the stats separately is Stitcher which is an app that streams the show on mobile phones.

If you could leave us a review, it would be great! A lot of people don't realize but one of the biggest factors in the itunes rankings is the reviews so we always try to push for that so the show gets more exposure. We don't get rich from this but want as many people to enjoy it as possible.

Thanks again!
