Classic Rock Bottom

Two more essential albums to showcase this week and they come from the new millennium, you know somewhere between 1/1/2000 - 12/31/2009.

Enjoy!

Porcupine Tree
Deadwing
2005

1 - Lazarus
2 - Halo
3 - Shesmovedon

This album contains what may be my favorite track of the new millennium, and thats Lazarus, stunning work on here. Top to bottom this is a must have for any fan of rock and roll.

Porcupine Tree have always been pigeonholed with the modern prog movement, but the reality is that they're both a riff-addicted metal band and a troupe obsessed with rich harmonies and memorable refrains. Take the grinding guitar work of "Shallow" which dukes it out with frontman Steve Wilson's undeniably melodic chorus before easing into the delicate, beautifully crafted "Lazarus." Few bands exhibit this kind of depth, be it the dreamy, Pink Floyd-inspired hallucination "Halo" or the Queensrÿche echoes of "Open Car." If the 12-minute sonic meander known as "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here" is as head-trippy as rock music gets anymore, it is reassuring to know that this Tree is still growing. Ideal for headphones, Deadwing -- despite its title -- takes flight.

Dio
Magica
2000

4 - Fever Dreams
5 - Feed My Head
6 - Losing My Insanity

Killer concept and killer album.

Ronnie James Dio's band's previous studio effort, 1996's Angry Machines, admirably addressed modern, non-traditional heavy metal topics. But the musically superior Magica is rooted in the dark, mystical themes he perfected on Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and early Dio albums. One important factor is the solid lineup, particularly the return of Craig Goldy, the best guitarist Dio's had in his band besides Vivian Campbell. Bassist Jimmy Bain and drummer Simon Wright also return. Dio seems inspired, and his vocals are more textured than usual. Magica is a detailed fantasy epic about the struggle between good and evil. Several elements are similar to J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved Lord of the Rings novels, which themselves rely on traditional literary archetypes such as heroes, villains, and mythic quests.

DEADWING - Yeah, this is a great album, but I don't agree, that Lazarus is special good. Imo it's not among the 5 best tracks on the album. Halo and Shesmovedon are on the other hand. Remember, you sent me "Shemovedon" on MP3 or whatever, becuase it wasn't on the european release? Nice gesture. That's a great extra track. I'm not sure, if this is my favorite PT-album, but it might be. Still, "Raven" and "Hand" are better imo.

DIO - I'm not a big fan of Dio (the man). I respect his work with Rainbow and Black Sabbath, but his own band never really impressed me. "Holy Diver" was a great release in May 1983 (I still remember buying it the same day, as I bought "Piece Of Mind"), but one of those albums, I got tired of rather fast, and nowadays, I can't listen to it. It's not my kind of music anymore, if ever. Dungeons and Dragons-bull****. Imo, if you own Holy Diver, you don't need anther DIO-album. The last DIO-album, I bought was "Dream Evil" in 1987. At that time, I was sooo tired of this.....music.

Listening to this DIO-album, I hear, that I didn't make a mistake. "Fever Dreams" is okay, if you compare it to "Holy Diver", the album. "Feed My Head" is not, except for the quiot piece in the middle of the song, but man, I wouldn't listen to this at home, for sure. I kind of feel my brain getting smaller , listening to this cr*p. LMI is more of the same ol' Dungeons and Dragons-Heavy Metal, well kind of what Iron Maiden also still releases.

Campbell once said, that Ronnie Dio didn't like how Leppard/"Mutt" Lange changed HM with Pyromania, and that Dio kept on making the same "old" kind of music. Well, I moved on as many others, DIO didn't and if you like it, fine by me, but I don't.

Essential releases in the '00's:

TOOL - Lateralus

Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf

I've heard very little of either of your suggestions, and I've tried to steer clear of grunge bands in my selections ...  I've heard the Tool album before but its been since a friend of mine had it at an old job, must've been 2000-2001 when I heard it first and last.  If you promise that they are not Niels-Rock I'll give them another try...  hehehe

Well, if we can agree, that Niels-Rock is Alternative Rock, then no, niether are Niels-rock

Both albums are definitely on my top 10 of albums released after the year 2000.

Actually Dio changes his sound in the 90's for the "Strange Highways" and "Angry Machines" albums and they didn't work at all.

I loved the Dio "Magica" album. It definitely was his best work since Dream Evil.

Agree!  This and Holy Diver are his two best IMO

So, if an album was released on 1/1/2000 or 12/31/2009, they're not eligible? Just want to be clear on that.

"Deadwing" is a good album, however it pales in comparison to "Fear Of A Blank Planet" and "In Absentia". This album here just didn't and doesn't have the impact those two had, at least for me. I could listen to those two on a loop for awhile and not get bored. Don't get me wrong, I like "Deadwing" but not as much as those two.

STEEEEEEEEEERIKE ONE!

As for Dio, well..............

"Holy Diver" is a classic. No doubt about that. Then I bought "The Last In Line" and I was done with Dio (except for HD). That secnd album bored me to tears and the songs I heard from other albums did nothing for me. Kinda strange because I like RJD, but it's like he blew his awesomeness on that first album. These songs here really do nothing for me, even thought the last song has a few interesting moments, but it squanders them.

STEEEEEEEEERIKE 3!

If I were to pick essential albums from the '00's, it would definitely be any of the Opeth studio albums. With or without the CM vocals, I can't recommend them highly enough.

"Poets & Madmen" from Savatage is awesome.

Lacuna Coil's "Comalies" and "Karmacode" are also essential because I say so.

This is one of the reasons why (and yes, there is a method to my madness).

Porcupine Tree discography is stellar, I get it.  I would have little to no argument for the albums you mentioned, its such a tight race, it came down to preference and the one song that tips the scales for me, and that's Lazarus.

That's why you're a bench player.
