Classic Rock Bottom

So now the Dynamic Duo have completed their November challenge and after some bitter exchanges are now challenging each other to see whose post is most annoying.

RJHog strikes first with Bruce Springsteen, Jon? We shall see... All I know is that we all suffer when these two can't get their act together. So in comes SHT to save the day yet again. Too bad nobody listens to this small, time friendly, high quality playlist week over week. But no time for bitterpills, I'll leave that RJ and Jon.

This week I received the Rock Candy Records new release bundle from Honeymoon Suite and now you all get to hear the love. Its kind of a three-fer hidden treasure fest...

  1. Check out Rock Candy Records, they have some great hidden treasures!
  2. A cool 80's hair/glam/pop-metal band that went away too early, and
  3. Canadian band lovers will dig this!

Ladies and Gentlemen - HONEYMOON SUITE..

The band was originally formed in 1981 by lead vocalist and guitarist Johnnie Dee (of Niagara Falls, Ontario), Keyboardist Brad Bent (of Toronto, Ontario), and original drummer Mike Lengyell, formerly with The Diodes. By 1983, the line-up changed, with Dee (the only original remaining member) now on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, along with new recruits Derry Grehan on lead guitar and Dave Betts on drums. Grehan became the band's primary songwriter, and penned "New Girl Now," which won them an unsigned band contest put on by Toronto radio station Q107.

Honeymoon Suite
1984

1 - Burning In Love

The band's self-titled debut album, produced by Tom Treumuth, was released in June, 1984. The album featured four charting hits in Canada: a completely re-recorded version of "New Girl Now," "Burning In Love," "Wave Babies," and "Stay In the Light." All were written by Grehan. "New Girl Now" was also Honeymoon Suite's first single to reach the top-50 in the United States.

The Big Prize
1986

2 - Wounded

Their follow up album, The Big Prize, produced by Bruce Fairbairn, was equally successful in Canada, with four more hits: "Bad Attitude," "Feel It Again," "What Does It Take," and "All Along You Knew." Grehan still wrote the lion's share of the band's material, but Dee and Coburn also contributed songs to this album; "Feel It Again", a Coburn composition, reached the Top 40 in the US, while Grehan's "What Does It Take" reached no. 52, buoyed by its inclusion on the soundtrack for the John Cusack film One Crazy Summer. In 1989, "Bad Attitude" was featured in the series finale of Miami Vice, played during a Ferrari driving segment that mirrored one from the series' pilot episode.

Racing After Midnight
1988

3 - Love Changes Everything

In 1988, their third album was finally released: Racing After Midnight, produced by Ted Templeman (of Van Halen fame) and Jeff Hendrickson. That album made the top 10 in Canada, but was not as successful in the U.S. Singles included "Love Changes Everything," "Looking Out for Number One," "Cold Look" (Europe only), and "It's Over Now." By now, while Grehan was still the primary songwriter, Dee and Preuss frequently co-wrote with Grehan.

I had the first and second album and, except for a few tracks, wasn't really too into Honeymoon Suite. Most of their stuff was too poppy for me, but the first track here is good, the second not that good and the third is pretty good. See, I now have a greatest hits disc and it has what I want and I believe 2/3 of these tracks are on that disc. "Feel It Again" is a great song, but you didn't include that here which I guess I understand since you hate me, but that's ok. I'll grab my greatest hits disc and listen to it there whenever I want.

Hey, you also posted a Canadian band. Another dig at Rjhog and his post this week? VERY interesting. VERY, VERY interesting.

"but you didn't include it HERE". Sheesh.

I have bought a few albums from Rock Candy Records and everyone should check their website out. You will find some things you probably haven't thought of in years or have never heard. Their prices are reasonable too.

Plus you can get them cheaper at importcds.com and use SAVE10 to get an additional 10% off.  Not a shill!

I liked the song New Girl Now, but I never really even tried to get into this band.  Maybe that was a mistake.

Burning In Love - Wow!  This song is great.  This is a truly lost hidden gem.  And Scott found it.  Awesome.  I like everything about this song.

Wounded -  This has an air of familiarity to it for me.  Jon's wrong, it's not bad at all.  And it sounds reminiscent of Bon Jovi to me.  So Scott likes this song, which sounds like Bon Jovi, so he must like Bon Jovi.  Right?  Nice guitar playing on both of these tracks.

Love Changes Everything - Another cool sounding song.  With a terrific little guitar solo.  Three for three on this one Scott.

Song Ranking:

1. Burning In Love

2. Love Changes Everything

3. Wounded

Terrific post.  I'm gonna get one of these albums for sure.

I strongly recommend starting with The Big Prize...

Thanks for tech the great feedback, Except for that one band you mentioned...

Not as much as you love Bruce!
