Classic Rock Bottom

Bands come together is some strange ways and then some happen naturally, from birth you could say. So after some time away, were coming back in a Familial way ... and thats by looking into bands that are comprised of siblings - Bands of Brothers (and maybe sisters too)

My mix tape has begun to come together, but I've omitted some very obvious ones, so comment away! Add to the playlist and enjoy some great hidden treasures while you think about it...

The Marshall Tucker Band
Together Forever
1978

1 - Love Is a Mystery

The original members of the Marshall Tucker Band had been playing in various lineups under different band names around the Spartanburg SC area since the early 1960s. In 1966, members of several such bands merged to form the Toy Factory, named after guitarist Toy Caldwell. The Toy Factory's constantly shifting lineup included, Caldwell, his younger brother Tommy, Doug Gray, Jerry Eubanks, George McCorkle, and Franklin Wilkie. In fact, in 1970 the Toy Factory was the opening act for the Allman Brothers when the Allmans played at the "Sitar" music lounge in Spartanburg.

In 1972, Caldwell and McCorkle once again revamped the band's lineup, eventually settling on Tommy Caldwell on bass, George McCorkle rhythm guitar, vocalist Doug Gray, and Jerry Eubanks, flute/tenor sax, while adding Paul Riddle on drums; the new lineup adopted the name "Marshall Tucker Band." Wet Willie lead singer Jimmy Hall told Toy Caldwell to book the band at Grant's Lounge in Macon which he did. After hearing the band play at Grant's Buddy Thornton and Paul Hornsby recorded the band's demo at Capricorn Studios in Macon, Ga. Frank Fenter and Phil Walden signed The Marshall Tucker Band based on those demos.

2 - Waste Away

Spock's Beard was formed in Los Angeles in 1992 by brothers Neal and Alan Morse. Both had played together in bands in the 1980's and initially intended that their new project would be just the two of them, with Neal Morse performing lead vocals and keyboards and Alan Morse on guitar. The brothers soon decided to form a full band and recruited Nick D'Virgilio on drums after meeting him at a blues jam in Los Angeles. John Ballard, a friend of Neal Morse's, was brought in to play bass, but was replaced by Dave Meros before the band began recording demos for their first album. The band's name is a reference to the "Mirror, Mirror" episode of Star Trek. According to Alan Morse: "Spock's Beard was sort of a phrase that we'd say to each other - my brother and I - when something weird would happen. We'd say, 'Wow, that's like Spock's Beard,' meaning, 'that only happens in a parallel universe, right?'

Immediately following the release of Snow, Neal Morse announced that he was leaving Spock's Beard. Having recently converted to Christianity, Morse wanted to explore that aspect of his life more through his music, but did not want to impose his beliefs upon the band. He urged them to continue on without him and Nick D'Virgilio took over as the band's lead singer. D'Virgilio would continue to play drums on studio albums, while Jimmy Keegan was hired to fill in for him as drummer during live performances.

3 - Love In The Midnight

Twin brothers Chuck (bass guitar) and John Panozzo (drums) first got together with their neighbor Dennis DeYoung (vocals and keyboards) while living in the Roseland area, eventually taking the band name "The Tradewinds". Chuck Panozzo left to attend seminary school for a year but returned to the group by 1964. Tom Nardini had been brought in to replace Chuck on guitar and Chuck decided to play bass guitar when he returned to the band. John Panozzo was one of their first drummers, while Dennis DeYoung had switched from accordion to organ and piano. In 1965, the name "Tradewinds" was changed to TW4 after another band called The Trade Winds broke through nationally. By 1966, the Panozzo brothers had joined DeYoung at Chicago State College and kept the group together doing gigs at high schools and frat parties while studying to be teachers.

4 - In Walks the Night

In 1971, Heart consisted of Steve Fossen, Roger Fisher, David Belzer (keys) and Jeff Johnson (drums). After Ann Wilson joined (in 1970 or 1972), the band was renamed Hocus Pocus.

Mike Fisher, Roger's brother, was set to be drafted into the military. Nancy Wilson has stated that when he did not report for duty, his home was raided, but he slipped out a rear window, escaped to Canada and became a Vietnam War "draft dodger".

One day in 1972 (or 1971), Mike crossed the border to visit family and, by chance, met Ann at a Hocus Pocus (or White Heart) show. According to Nancy, that meeting was "when she and Michael fell in love" and Ann decided to follow Mike back to Canada. Steve Fossen finished his college education before he also decided to move to Canada in late 1972, and Roger followed in late 1972/early 1973. Along with Mike and Ann, the band Heart was officially formed. Her sister Nancy Wilson joined in 1974, and soon after became romantically involved with Roger, who once said that the Heart Partnership is what he called the two romantically involved couples: himself with Nancy Wilson, and his brother Mike Fisher with Ann Wilson.

5 - Loving You Sunday Morning

Rudolf Schenker, the band's rhythm guitarist launched the band in 1965. At first, the band had beat influences and Schenker himself handled the vocals. Things began to come together in 1970 when Schenker's younger brother Michael and vocalist Klaus Meine joined the band. In 1972 the group recorded and released their debut album Lonesome Crow, with Lothar Heimberg on bass and Wolfgang Dziony on drums. During the Lonesome Crow tour, Scorpions opened for upcoming British band UFO. Near the end of the tour, guitarist Michael Schenker accepted an offer of lead guitar for UFO. Uli Roth, a friend of the Schenker brothers, was then called in to finish off the tour.

Just weeks after quitting UFO, Michael Schenker returned to the group for a short period during the recordings for the album Lovedrive. This gave the band three guitarists (though Schenker's contribution to the final release was limited to only three songs). The result was Lovedrive, an album which some critics consider to be the pinnacle of their career. Containing such fan favourites as "Loving You Sunday Morning", "Always Somewhere", "Holiday" and the instrumental "Coast to Coast", it firmly cemented the 'Scorpions formula' of hard rock songs mixed with melodic ballads. The album's provocative artwork was named "Best album sleeve of 1979" by Playboy magazine, yet ultimately changed for American release. Lovedrive reached No. 55 on the US charts, demonstrating that the band was gathering an international following. After the completion and release of the album the band decided to retain Michael in the band, forcing Jabs to leave. However, in April 1979, during their tour in France, Michael quit and Jabs was brought in permanently to replace him.

TMTB - Never heard this one. Looks like a southern American-band. I don't hate those, but it's usually not music I care about. Not bad, but boring, and goddamn looong.

SPOCKS BEARD - Always nice listening to SP. I don't think, I've heard this one before. It's not one of the best songs from the band, but it's okay. I don't think, I would had liked this back in 1996, though. I am a BIT tired of Neal Morse at the moment.

STYX - I know, I've heard this one before, because I listened to all of Styx's albums a few years back. I can't really remember it, though. Again, it strikes me how much City Boy sounds like Styx. This song could easily had been on "The Day The Earth Caught Fire" from 1979 as well. Best one so far.

HEART - Never a Heart-fan, only for maybe a month or two in 1987. Another song, I haven't heard before, or at least I can't remember hearing it. Honest opinion? Boring AOR!

SCORPIONS - Again, I was never really a Scorpions-fan. I saw them in concert in 1989, and I can't remember much from that concert, other than it was yet another step on the way to Grunge for me. Scorpions and UFO are kind of the same thing to me: Okay songs, but a whole album is too much. Not a very good production, not THAT good musicians (IMO). There are SO many much better bands and better albums listening to. But this IS the second-best song of these.

Besides the obvious bands such as AC/DC, Kinks, Van Halen and so on, a band of brothers that comes to my mind is Raven.

0 for 5!!!  Yay me!  Actually, I knew going into this what you were likely to say, but Southern Rock is a staple in my house, so its gonna get some attention in my playlists from time to time.

But the fact that you gave your time to this is cool! Thanks !!

Enjoying this music is a bit hard with that picture at the top. It is so wrong in so many ways that it's now ingrained in my mind. How many things are wrong with it? MORE THAN YOU CAN SHAKE A STICK AT!!!!

THen I see the Lovedrive cover and wonder where the bubblegum is in THAT picture.

YOU COULDN'T HAVE PICKED A DIFFERENT PICTURE??????????????????????????

Boy, oh boy.

I like TMTB, they get a bit jazzy in some of their music. Quite mellow too, there's a few songs where they kick out the jams, but I can't recall any since my mind is whacked now.

SB was ok, sounds like his voice was cracking or something. Decent song, but I could be wrong about the voice cracking. It could be because my mind is warped.

I'm in such bad state of mind right now that I can't have a discussion about the Real True Styx. Cornerstone was the last of the older albums by Styx that I picked up. For some reason I could only remember a song or two from the album but when I listened to it, I remembered that there is some killer stuff there (minus "Babe", of course). I do remember the vinyl, it had that cover that opened like a door. Or something. Like that.

Yep, I really like this Heart album, believe I posted it a few years ago in L/F. They started to get away from that 80's production and went back to so,me serious rock. Not this song, it has some of that 80's sound, but not as much. Make sense?

Yeah, this last album. You know, with the bubblegumboob. I like this album, but like Animal Magnetism a bit better. The reason I bought this album many moons ago was because of Michael Schenker. I like how stuff like that introduces a clothed fella to other music.

This would have been a great listen if not for that picture. It's stuck with me for life.

Well, can't forget about The Doobie Brothers and The Allman Brothers. DUH!

P.S. If that's a picture of you in your youth, I'm sorry. For you.

hahaha...  I take it you liked the music, had it not been for the picture this would have been a glowing review!  And I'm surprised no one has brought up AC/DC yet....  And who are the siblings in the Doobie Brothers?

The Doobie's. Duh. The Doobie BROTHERS. Can't you see it? It's pretty darn simple.

AC/DC was mentioned already.

oops...  Sorry Niels!

Marshal Tucker Band - Man, that's a nice sounding song.  Really don't know enough of the band's history to realize that there were brothers in the band.  I've often said I'd like to pick up some of MTB's back catalog.  I think I'll get around to it sooner or later.  Oh yeah, this is a really long song.

Spock's Beard - This is a band that is loved by you, Niels and possibly Jon.  I have their last two albums and they are pretty decent.  This track isn't bad.  I like the acoustics, but I like the electric lead work as well.  And as with MTB, I had no idea the band had brothers.

Styx - I certainly knew Styx had a couple of brothers in it.  I'm a big fan of John Panozzo's drumming.  I think he's a bit underrated.  And Tommy Shaw is my favorite band member.  He has such an awsome singing voice.  Cornerstone is an album that I own, but also an album that I've never given much attention.  This song is terrific.  Maybe a spin of this one is in order.

Heart - Heart is a band I get into more sometimes than others.  That debut, of course, is amazing.  And although someone like Niels would hate the mid-80's comeback period, I really dig it.  I have this album and I may or may not have heard it once.  Seems like I listened to it somewhere along the line.  Unfortunately, this song is just okay, nothing particularly memorable.

Scorpions - This is one of those bands that had a couple of singles in the 80's that I liked, but I never really warmed to them otherwise.  For some reason, I've never been a big fan of the vocalist's accent, though I do think he's a very good singer.  Weird, I know.  But I did pick up Humanity Hour Zero (or something like that) a few years ago and thought it was fantastic.  But the follow up did nothing at all for me.  Thus I never spent cash on their latest effort.  However, I have had a bit of a desire to go back and pick up some older stuff.  Just another band on a long list of bands that I need to do that for.  Oh, this song doesn't impress me much.

I'm trying to think of some bands with siblings, other than what's been mentioned.  I think STP featured brothers.  There's the Beach Boys, The Bee Gees, The Black Crowes, CCR and the Isley Brothers.  That's all I've got.

My recommendation for staring to listen to TMTB starts with this album...

And then ...

then its a toss up between Carolina Dreams and Long Hard Ride....
