Classic Rock Bottom

So I noticed something while putting this together... More on that later..

I keep a bunch of playlists in my iTunes library specifically for this forum. As I come across songs or ideas I add to them so I don't lose any thoughts or ideas. Some are empty and some have a ton of songs waiting to be PodSnacked. Cover tunes is one of the latter, its full to the brim. I could do a bunch of these playlists, but lets leave it at 4 tunes again. Cover songs are always an interesting topic anyway. This week I noticed a pile of Rolling Stones covers in my list, not songs the Stones have covered (and there are plenty) but other bands covering the Stones. So that's what I've got for you this week.

And so with typing the above paragraph I realized I had typed the exact same thing once before when I did a playlist of Chuck Berry covers. So after a bit of Deja-Vu I mixed this up just a little bit. Like I said there were plenty to choose from, but I played with the playlist and came up with two female singers and two male singers, kind of a cool twist if you wanna call it that, but I had a good time figuring out how to make this work best, so now you all have to tell me what I missed and got wrong.  You are all very good at that...

Enjoy!

The Corrs
Dreams: The Ultimate Corrs Collection
2007

1 - Ruby Tuesday

I've pulled this off of a greatest hits package and I believe they played this with Ronnie Wood. I know we've debated the hotness of the 3 Corrs ladies before on here, and it would seem that that debate is still valid as they appear to not have aged much, if at all. But alas, hotness does not mean good music, there must be talent as well. Glad to say they have that to, which makes the debate even more difficult. But, lets just leave it there, with the music - although very poppy - it's a guilty pleasure of mine and I enjoy them periodically.

Linda Ronstadt
Simple Dreams
1977

2 - Tumbling Dice

I think vocally, she's in a league of her own. Pitch perfect and always interesting no matter the genre she is singing, at least until the early 80's. Her output from the late sixties until 81-82ish is peppered with hit after hit after hit. You would likely be shocked at how good and how familiar her back catalog would be. Another guilty pleasure for me, but if you look at the list of musicians and songwriters she employed it reads like a who's Who in music!

The Who
Odds & Sods
1974

3 - Under My Thumb

An album of outtakes that sounds as good and as put together as any other bands best studio work. But you can really hear the era of each song on it and it's a cool listening experience. Probably should've dated this one 1998 though since this track wasn't added to the package until then. Fun track...

Peter Frampton
Wind of Change
1972

4 - Jumping Jack Flash

I put this last in the playlist because I liked it best, but it takes a minute to kick in. He puts interesting spins on it throughout and there's the signature guitar work that I love from Frampton.

I like Linda Ronstadt, but a majority of her songs are covers, so this really isn't special. I think she had something like five original songs in her career?

I like The Corrs, but you already knew that. Nice version here.

See, The Who makes it special since they aren't like LR. A few cover songs during your career is allright, but a majority just isn't.

Never really got into this version from PF. Nice geetar work, but it's just lacking something. Maybe it's too slow. I dunno.

Between you and that Pell guy, there is definitely collusion going on this week. Good thing I'm around to nip it in the bud, as barney Fife would say.

I am no colluder...  and you have no evidence to show that I ever have been...  consider this bud nipped!

Pretty good covers here.  I The Who's cover is probably best here.  I like the dual vocals.  The Frampton tune is pretty good, but the guitar solo is magnificent.  Definitely.

I've been thinking about picking up some Ronstadt, just never have.  And I don't have any Coors.  Or Coors light.

I checked my iTunes Covers Playlist and only had two Stones covers...both of Sympathy For The Devil.  I thoroughly enjoy covers.  Just sayin'.  Nice listen.

Thanks boss!  If you're interested in a Ronstadt album consider Heart Like A Wheel or Simple Dreams as starters...
