Classic Rock Bottom

Star Date: Cinco De Mayo, Dos-0-Uno-Cinco...

We're off planet Earth and deep into space and thats where our playlist finds us this week. We begin by travelling through space and then we discover a couple of different places to stop and explore before heading out again. Where we go nobody knows, it is space afterall, and with so many directions and places to explore were left to float the universe!

So, where next?

Yes
The Yes Album
1971

1 - Starship Trooper: a. Life Seeker, b. Disillusion, c. Wurm

Yes biographer Chris Welch describes "Starship Trooper" as "one the most astonishing pieces" in Yes' repertoire. Welch particularly praises the "Würm" section for its "grinding intensity." The New Rolling Stone Album Guide critic Ernesto Lechner described the song as being "ethereal." Pitchfork Media considered "Howe's slow, spacey guitar build at the end" of the song to be "one of the great Yes moments." The song uses UFO imagery. Other themes that have been inferred for the song include new age ideas and environmentalism.

Blue Oyster Cult
Imaginos
1988

2 - In The Presence of Another World

Albert Bouchard began writing music for Imaginos following the release of the band's first album in 1972. There were plans as early as 1975 to release a concept album dedicated to Pearlman's scripts, but the material was not ready. All of the songs had been written by 1977, with the participation of various band members, and at least four of them ("Astronomy", "In the Presence of Another World", "I Am the One You Warned Me Of", "Imaginos") were completed and demoed during the recording sessions for the album Spectres. Demos of the other tracks were recorded by A. Bouchard and remained in various stages of development during the following years, with the band uninterested in pursuing the Imaginos project that Albert Bouchard and Sandy Pearlman had been insistently proposing.

UFO
No Heavy Petting
1976

3 - Martian Landscape

Album closer 'Martian Landscape' with it's heavily tremeloed keyboard intro is unlike anything else on the album and tips a hat to the space-rock origins of the band before developing into an entertaining little song with a wonderfully catchy chorus. Phil Mogg at his best was a great vocalist who contributed a lot to the band's sound but Schenker is a lot more than just the icing on the cake here. His influence on this album cannot be underestimated and his contributions rescue even the weaker tracks from filler status. If you fancy a bit of prime 70's hard rock with melodic sensibilities alongside some classic lead guitar work you could do a lot worse than check out 'No Heavy Petting'.

Black Sabbath
Paranoid
1970

4 - Planet Caravan

"Planet Caravan" is a psychedelic song by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Geezer Butler has stated that the song's meaning is floating through the universe with one's lover. The song appears on their 1970 breakthrough album Paranoid. Lead singer Ozzy Osbourne uses a Leslie speaker to achieve the vocals' treble and vibrato effects. The piano parts on the track were played by album engineer Tom Allom.

Wrong Space Meow!  hahahahahaha.....

"Mars Attacks!" is a cool movie. I don't care what anyone says. I even have a martian action figure (ok, doll) that makes the martian noises. It is awesome.

Even with the absence (again) of Major Tom, this was a good playlist. I had "Imaginos" on the original CD and it was fetching quite a pretty penny on ebay and other sites. I bought it in Omaha at some store, it had the "Nice Price" sticker on it and it was only $9.99, not sure if it was OOP at that time, but I help onto it. One thing about the production, it sounds like it was recorded in an echoey room or something. I like the album a lot, but even the remaster has that same sound. Makes it more dreamy, I guess.

Got my copy of Imaginos in the BOC box set - that was a wise purchase!!!

And yes Mars Attacks is a great movie!

YES - Never was a Yes-fan. They are too weird. I've got a box-set, though, and I remember listening to this track a couple of times. Like with other bands from that periode, their strongest work seems to be from their first 5 albums. Again the singer is the weakest link for me. Anderson's voice is way too "light", a bit annoying imo. But this track is a fine piece of Prog from the golden age, a bit too long, though. I prefer Genesis (and Tull, off course) from this periode of time.

BÖC - Even less a fan of BÖC than Yes, I am. It's not bad, but why waste anymore time on something, that I can't hear anything especially good in. This one kind of sound like Saga. I have a friend, that's a fan of BÖC, so I've heard a lot of their music. I've allways thought the same: "Take of that album, and put on something good". This song doesn't change that feeling at all.

UFO - Yet another band, I don't really care for. Mind you, I have tried to really get in to UFO, but kind of like BÔC, they appear to me as a "second hand-band". Don't get offended, Scott and Jon, but I really can't hear, why this band should had been any bigger, than they became. Once again the singer is one of the weak links. Another weak link is actually the songs. I don't think, they've got strong material at all. The strongest is the guitar, though especially not very strong on this track. I don't know when it was Schenker, and when it wasn't.

BLACK SABBATH - At last, a band that I can call myself a fan of. These days, I certainly prefer the Ozzy-albums to the Dio-albums. This track on the other hand, is extremely boring, and I usually skip it.

0 for 4!  Ive never done this horribly before... ever!  I'll get better, give me another chance please!!!

Dear Niels...

I'm kidding (except for the part about coming back to listen again) ...  I love the feedback!  Thanks for taking time to listen and respond!.

Scott

Yes - No.  Just kidding.  I have to agree with Niels, I'm not much of a Yes fan.  I can see where Anderson's voice could get extremely annoying.  But I have thought about exploring the band some.  Just haven't done it.  I like complete album box sets, and I think they may have one, not sure.  Who knows, maybe one day.  On a side note, it took me a little over a minute into the song to realize that my ear buds are shot.  No sound at all from the left bud.  Guess it's time for a new pair.  Oh, this song is okay.  Kinda long.  I guess because it's prog.  I did enjoy the guitar work near the end.

BOC - A new joy to me.  I wish I had been listening to this band since I was old enough to know.  I also have the complete albums box, and I totally dig what I've been able to listen to.  Now I'm gonna have to spin this up, because I like the dreaminess of the sound and it just rocks.  Swing and a miss for Niels on this one.

UFO - Second band in a row that is basically a new discovery to me.  I have purchased the vast majority of the band's catalog since I started listening to them, and I have yet to be disappointed.   This track does have a bit of an epic feel to it, probably mostly because of the guitar.  And I dig Mogg's voice, then and now.  Seems appropriate for an album closer.

BS - Psychedelic is an under statement.  This song sounds exactly like you are floating through space.  The guitar work on it is phenomenal,  And the percussion is quite cool.  So a nice pick here.

Good job Scott.  This was a nice listen.

Did you notice how eerily similar the opening to the UFO and Sabbath tracks were?  THe first 2-3 seconds are nearly indistinguishable...

I did not, but I'll try to check that out again.
