Classic Rock Bottom

Sometime you have to do what's right "for the fans".

You just need to swallow your pride, forget about the acrimony and utter hatred and do what "the fans" want. Nevermind that there's a boatload of money involved, "the fans" don't care. They just want you back.

So the solo career is temporarily on hold, at least for the month of November. Maybe I let the cat out of the bag too early (ooooh, poor kitty), but I really don't care. It's "the fans" that matter, not a co-worker.

We're starting our reunion tour with Fleetwood Mac. Hell, the whole month of November is going to be dedicated to Fleetwood Mac! FM albums, some solo stuff, maybe another band with an ex- member of FM...you get the drift. I guess we can call it....what? Noveember! Flovemamber? Well, nothing really fits. Oh, well (and that will make more sense later in the month).

Therefore, to open the show, I give you the 1972 release (yep, they existed before B/N joined, for those that DON'T KNOW) titled "Bare Trees".

Maybe not the FM you're used to since this is not overplayed on the radio. There are a couple songs that do get some airplay, the title track and, on the rare occasion, the original version of "Sentimental Lady".

Other than that, not an album full of hits. Just good, solid rock. A little blues-based, some mellow stuff and a lot of nice geetar work from Danny Kirwan and Bob Welch.

I guess I could go into more detail, but why bother? Just listen to it and discover the "other" Fleetwood Mac (or other, other other).

I may be the only one looking forward to an all Fleetwood Mac month, but so far this is very cool for me!

Ive never heard this album but have enjoyed listening very much.  I agree that this is a nice melodic rock album.  I know the big hit "Sentimental Lady" from Bob Welch's solo album and Ive heard the original but its been a long time.  That geetar on Danny's Chant is killer!  Love that...

Its weird...  Once Buckingham/Nicks joined the band Christine McVie becomes this galvanizing force, but here she seems out of place.  I have to wonder if that has something to do with the looming changes that the band made later.  Maybe some Mac historian coudl clarify....

The only track I didnt care for was Homeward Bound, and that spoken track at the end was odd, but everything else sounded really solid!

Putting this one on my wish list!  Nice nice post Jon!  I'm feeling guilty for thinking about posting songs from bands you hate now...  May have to put that off.

No, no, no. Go for it. I can take it. Remember, I listened to an R.E.M album recently that lasted something like 8 hours. Bring the pain!

That was very funny above Jon, lol!
I've always liked this album.

And I go back to their Sleeepwalk-like instrumental Albatross.

Mike

Thanks for the kind words!

I don't have Albatross but believe I have heard it. Do you happen to have it "lying around"?

I am just starting the 2nd half of the Saints, lol!
Gotta have it by tonight.

Albatross ain't "lying around", but I'll find it, lol!

Interesting.  While I don't like it as much as the Buckingham/Nicks version of FM, it's definitely not bad.  I particularly like the Christine McVie song Homeward Bound.  I'm not a huge fan of her voice, but I like that song.

The other interesting thing to me was Sentimental Lady.  I had never heard this version until today.  I like the Bob Welch solo version better.  You never know, you may hear that some time this month...

I smell some Welch, lol!

I like both versions of Fleetwood Mac, maybe pre-Buckinghan/Nicks a little better.

It is VERY similar to what I wrote about Blood, Sweat & Tears!

Do you know what Christine McVie's name was before she married the Mac?

Christine Perfect.

Even made a solo album I have on vinyl.

Mike

Strange...her maiden name is my middle name. Actually it's "The Perfect" but I don't want to brag or anything..

Jon,

Hahahahaha...that's your middle name!
OH YEAH, mine too, and I don't brag either!

Mike

A whole month of Fleetwood Mac? Uhh...this may be where I check out. Where's my link to Grooveyard Radio? Or better yet, I'll just bring in my Big Jim Slade collection and listen over and over and over...

all right, all right, all right, I'll listen to some Moistwood Jak...I mean Fleetfoot Toe...I mean Mellowout Blow...I mean....

Damn, I'm on track number two, and I do believer I hear a nice rumblin' bass line, and some freakin' bongos...

Ok, this is actually a decent listen. Not a purchase for me, but I did n't hate it, or anything. After two listens, the best tracks for me were the title track and "Danny's Chant".

And there you go! Wait till the next one....
