Classic Rock Bottom

As November slowly comes to an end, so comes the end of Macvember or whatever the hell it was called. I'm thinking this will make a few people happy?

Yes, I already did a FM album a couple weeks ago but I'm doing another but going all the way back to 1969, well before they were a pop group. All the way back to when they were a blues-rock band!

Isn't that exciting?

This is the FM version led by Peter Green (geetar) and it's a totally different animal than the Buckingham/Nicks version. Not really any pop here ("Oh Well" maybe? Nah.) but bluesy with a little hint of some hard rock.

Also featuring Danny Kirwan (geetar 2), John McVie (bass), Mick Fleetwood (duh) and Jeremy Spencer (a little piano) as well as an uncredited Christine Perfect (piano) plus a couple other guests.

This would be the last album with Peter Green and FM would eventually morph into that beast everyone knows and loves or hates.

This is a very good listen for those into blues-rock, late 60's rock, hard-rock, geetar rock yet might not be a good listen for those that want the poppy FM.

Another nice pic.  You are on a roll.

This album was much better than I would have ever expected.  Not saying it was great, but I really dig the guitar work.  I've really been wanting to discover some new music with exceptional guitar playing lately.  Still looking.

Good pick Jon.

EETH!

Seriously, if that's your wife, I actually respect you now.

Just send the rest of the photos to my private inbox.

I'm not a pimp because it ain't easy.

In many ways, I prefer the Peter Green-version of FM. I only own one cd, the double-disc "Live At The BBC", and too much blues, is...well too much blues!! But still, PG is/was a great guitarist. Is that a picture of your wife?

Has anyone else ever covered this song "Oh Well"? I'm sure I've heard it before.

Definitely a bluesy record, but not really like traditional blues songs. Sorta makes me sleepy to listen to this.

Next up???

Gordon, MAYBE you're thinking about "Beatin' around the bush" by AC/DC. I believe, they stole the riff.

Niels, good call on that! "Beatin' Around The Bush" was always one of my favorite tracks off of "Highway To Hell". And after you mentioning this, I went back and listened again to this Fleetwood Mac tune, and you are right...the two riffs are very similar.

But I've heard someone else do this song before...I remember the lyrics about "can't help the shape I'm in, I cant sing, I aint pretty, and my legs are thin..."

So I looked around on the internet, and over 150 artists have covered "Oh Well" before, including Tom Petty and Billy Sheehan. My guess is most of the cover versions dont include the long, slow, musical section in the FM original version.

Maybe you heard the live version from "Fleetwood Mac Live"? I remember it getting quite a bit of airplay back in the 80's, it doesn't feature Peter Green, but Lindsey Buckingham does quite a nice job with it.
