Marillion crazy! 

 

80's album crazy!

 

And for those keeping track, I'm still following the rule layed down upon me to discuss music and nothing else in these posts. That's right, 2 weeks in a row!

 

So we have a companion piece to "Clutching At Straws" which was recently posted on the Marillion fan page right here at this site. 

 

This week's L/F album came out in 1985 and was a huge hit in England, reaching #1 and spending 41 weeks on the chart. As for the U.S.? It peaked at #47. Still, it's a relatively unknown album in America. 

 

There were a few singles released, the most well-known (well, in the U.S.) was "Kayleigh" (#14 on the Billboard rock chart and #74 on the pop charts). However, in England it reached #1 or #2, depending on where you get your info from. Damn internet.      

 

This is the third Marillion album, with the next ("Clutching At Straws") being the last with Fish on vocals. He was replaced by Steve Hogwarth and, to me, they weren't the same. 

 

But that's ok! We still have four Fish-led Marillion albums ("Script For A Jester's Tear", "Fugazi", this one and the before mentioned "Clutching At Straws") and they are all quite good.

 

It's prog-rock, folks. If you don't like prog, you may not like this. Or maybe you'll start liking it after listening to this. Who knows?

 

As a sidenote, I was in England when this album came out. I had never heard of Marillion before but a friend of mine introduced me to them and persuaded me to pick up an album, any album by them. And I did, this album being the first.

 

Sidenote #2: Even though it really isn't, the album cover, to me, looks evil for some reason. It freaks me out. Gives me nightmares.

Availability: Around $10. Do yourself a favor, spend an extra few bucks and get the 2 disc version which includes a bonus disc of outakes/alternate versions.

Okay, so now I've heard 2 Marillion albums in my lifetime, all within the span of 4 days.  I've heard bits that make me think of Geoff Tate of Queensryche, I guess that would be Fish.  I'm guessing maybe Fish had some influence on Tate.  I even heard one song that strongly reminded me of The Who (Heart Of Lothian).  Maybe Marillion was influenced by The Who?  I don't really know who came first.  Anyway, here are my song grades:

This is enough to say I'm interested in further exploration of Marillion.

I think I know why I got it wrong the first time. But I found a better source so I'm 95% sure I know

I didn't really liked this album, when I bought it back in '85. It was too "poppy", and "Kayligh" and "Lavender" were played too many times on european radio, I got sick of them. I gave the album to one of my friends, who was more of a fan. "Clutching At Straws" is much, much better. But it's a while, since I heard MC, and I haven't had the opportunity lately, so one of these days, I'll take a listen.
