Classic Rock Bottom

Thanks to Van Alan, I'm forcing myself to post and listen to April Wine's 1988 release titled "Walking Through Fire".

You would think that an album cover featuring a geetar coming out of (or is that going into?) fire would be some hard rockin' stuff. But no. Guess the cover was picked to sucker idiots like me into picking this up (twice).

Since I was a wee lad when this first came out I liked the opening track, "Rock Myself To Sleep" because it, well, rocked. Back then. Now that I listen to it I'm not convinced that it really does rock.  Maybe it does in an 80's way.

I've gone on record somewhere saying that I do not like "Power Play", except for that one song (take a guess which one!). I'm going on record here saying that I dislike this album even more than "Power Play".

Now, the whole album is not a complete bomb. There's a couple decent tracks with the opening track no longer being one of them, and it sucks that the decent tracks are at the end of the album.  It just seems like there's too much soft music and I want the April Wine that smokes. Shame that it's not here.

Good thing 5 years later they made amends to me and released "Attitude", an April Wine album that is awesome in it's goodness and, yes, smokiness.

Walking Through Fire

1. Rock Myself To Sleep

2. Wanted Dead Or Alive

3. Beg For Your Love

4. Love Has Remembered Me

5. Anejo

6. Open Soul Surgery

7. You Don't Have To Act That Way

8. Hold On

9. All It Will Ever Be

10. Wait Any More

Availability: The single disc is OOP but available for around $21, but there is a twofer set that includes the glorious "Animal Grace", both albums remastered that can be found for around $13.

MSoTW: Total letdown. 2 out of the last 3 haven't been figured out yet. Jeez, last week's song was from a band that had a huge album in the 80's! C'mon! This week's nobody will figure out either.

Listening to this now.  I remember Rock Myself To Sleep.  I haven't heard that in forever.  Cool song!

The mystery song sounds a bit, in some places, like Ron Keel on vocals.

This album is much better than Jon makes it out to be.  The only really crappy song was track 3.

The mystery song singer also sounds like James Hetfield every once in a while...

I own this as well, mostly because Im an April Wine nut...  I would tend to land somewhere between your assessment and Jons.  I dont like how thick the keyboards are after the first track.  But there is some really cool riffs to be heard.  Like the Vallance written track Open Soul Surgery, which was first cut by Prism in 77.

The vocalist also sounds like Darryl Hall in some spots.

So Scott...am I right when I say that "Attitude" just blows this album away?
Yes and by a long ways, I also like Frigate better as welll
Frigate? Really? Don't like that too much. Seems even lighter than this album.
Yes, and I also have Back To The Mansion  which I would rate higher as well, but the best AW album ever made?  Easily First Glance...  Its a must have
Harder...Faster for me. I have First Glance, but like Harder...better. Have never been able to find Back To The Mansion at a fair price or Roughly Speaking...yet.

I have the above album on Vinyl (I thought it looked cool, but I have not listened to it yet). I'm listening to Open Soul Surgury Prism from Youtube and I don't really like it. It also sound like a 100% different song.
I have never heard a Prism song I have liked. I dunno, everything just sounds weak from them for some reason.

You're mostly wrong, of course.
