Classic Rock Bottom

Even thought I was happy going solo, I have found myself running short of cash and I now have to turn to the evil side.

After last years debacle (PBR the main instigator) I swore I would never do this again. However, I'm forced to do so now and I very grudgingly give you this week's "Lost" and/or ""Forgotten" album, the 1982 release from Rossington Collin's band titled "This Is The Way".

This is not what I wanted to do, but since I am now the low man on the totem pole, I have to accept what I'm instructed to do.

This album sold less than their debut. The highest it charted was #24 while the debut's highest chart position was #13, so do the math.

Low men on the totem pole give limited information.

I actually like this release better of the two. I will post pictures from inside the vinyl when I get a chance. Tashauna  is an epic song!

Here is inside the vinyl. Lyrics for the release are on the paper insert around the record.

I own the first one on vinyl, this is the "Lost" one for me, so thats where Im starting...

Right off the bat, I notice the tighter production and crispness in the music.  The music feels upbeat, funky, yet still southern flavored... what else would you expect!

  1. Gotta Get It Straight :  Nice opener, Krantz's voice fits nicely, kinda sounds like the band is writing for her strengths.  Can really hear that Skynyrd rhythm geetar work very clearly.
  2. Tashauna : Again a very friendly Skynyrd rhythm.  Strong track!  I was really wanting more geetar on that break though!
  3. Gonna Miss It When It's Gone : Another nice mid tempo southern rocker.  Love the geetar work, just wanted more if it!  Is this a theme?
  4. Pine Box : Interesting and totally unexpected.  I liked it though.  It wasnt great, but I didnt not like it!
  5. Fancy Ideas :  Nice opening riff, will we get the geetar Ive been craving?  Liked the feel of the tune, loved hearing some or the organ mixed into the riffing.  Also loved the change of vocal style, but theyre sitll toying with a breakout geetar solo thats not here yet...
  6. Don't Stop Me Now : Token Honky Tonk Southern Rock tune.  Some of these work for me and some dont, this one I didnt care for.
  7. Seems Like Every Day : Nice recovery from the Honky Tonk thing-a-ma-jig but this is a just a middle of the road tune for me.
  8. I'm Free Today : Cant place the voice, but, and again, I like the change up.  The acoustic work feels real good too and the tune is really nice, but it never really goes anywhere, seems like more could have been done to make this tune special, it was close though.
  9. Next Phone Call :  Bluesly funk?  Powels keyboard work is awesome.  Really like the feel of this one.  Finally some nice geetar work, but its still just a tease, not the full blown break out solo Collins is capable of...
  10. Means Nothing To You :  Cool mid tempo tune!  Hidden Treasure? Yes indeed!  Really really liked this song, and I finally got the extended solo I was so wanting to hear, its not as fierce as freebird, but its very melodic and fits the album, nice closer!

I think this is a must buy for me...

Just curious, but I dont Artimus Pyle ever joined them in this incarnation, its the one quality of the music thats missing (at least for me) - his style woudlve really made this better...

One of my favorite LAOW !!!

I never owned the debut or the sophomore release back in the day.  I know of the first one from the fact that my cousin owned the vinyl.

I'm gonna agree with Van on this one, I kinda like the second one a bit better, but I think the best song overall is Don't Misunderstand Me.  Scott's right also, the production is better.

I also agree with Scott in that there is just something about the vocalists phrasing or delivery.  It just sounds forced in some areas, like on the very nice second track.  To me, the best song and best vocal delivery on this album was Seems Like Every Day.

And I really liked the harmonies on Pine Box.

Yet the first one had more "hits" and sold more than the second. Imagine that.
