Classic Rock Bottom

So we continue with our salute to women in music, and why not have an album from The Go-Go's?

Maybe not as well known as their debut, which is a fantastic album in my book, "God Bless The Go-Go's" is their 2001 release, their first one in 17 years (and probably their last). Still sounds like The Go-Go's, but older and a little bit heavier in some places.

I guess this might not truly be a "lost" or "forgotten" album, probably should title this "Hey, you probably hate 'em because you're a rocker, but you might find something here you enjoy" or something like that.

Yes, there are many more women in music we can feature (and will), but I've always liked The Go-Go's and am not ashamed to admit that I picked up their debut when it came out waaaaay back in 1981. A catchy song is a catchy song, I like catchy songs and I think this album is full of 'em.

So forget about that sickness you might be feeling having to force yourself to listen to this, but give it a chance. That's not much to ask, is it?

God Bless The Go-Go's

2. Unforgiven

3. Apology

10. Sonic Superslide

11. Throw Me A Curve

12. Talking Myself Down

MSoTW: Scott again guessed the band, but nobody guessed the song title which is odd since it's mentioned at the beginning. This week is even harder, just a little taste of a band singing about....Vikings maybe?

I always thought Belinda Carlisle was pretty hot!  Did the music fare as well as Belinda?

LA LAND: Pretty goll-dern poppy !  Sounds exactly like what I would expect in the early 80's.

UNFORGIVEN:  s'allright, I do like her voice.  The drumming sounds like its having a hard time keeping up.  Maybe its just me...

APOLOGY:  Nice mid tempo love song.  Nice harmonies, but not that engaging of a tune really.  Sorry  (thats an Apology for not liking this, get it?  nevermind...)

STUCK IN MY CAR:  Filler!  And the styles are bleeding together too much

VISION OF NOWNESS:  Apparently there is such a thing as Nowness; something to do with Fashion according to google. Not sure thats what being sung about here though...

HERE YOU ARE:  A change of tempo, finally!  This is a pretty good tune, shows some maturity, not that there was some expectation that a bunch of middle aged women would try to sound young...

AUTOMATIC RAINY DAY:  eh!  Lyrics sure dont pull any punches .  I'd hate to be the person theyre singing about, maybe Debbie Downer or that Franklin kid on Peanuts?

KISSING ASPHALT:  Clearly this is filler.

INSINCERE:  Has an REM feel to the geetar, kind of a Shiny Happy People thing ok I just threw up in my mouth a little>>

SONIC SUPERSLIDE:  Production is obviously different but the tune isnt really very interesting , regarding the geetar solo, wait is that what that was?

THROW ME A CURVE:  "Clothes hanger lollipop", I thought they were clean nowdays?

TAKING MYSELF DOWN: Just when I was thinking the remainder of this would be nothing more than filler, a half decent tune pops up.

DAISY CHAIN:  Two "not too bad" tunes in a row at the end of the disc..  hmm...

Wasnt this suppose to be a comeback?  My overall impression is that its just OK, nothing really special.  Maybe thats why we heard about it, and then *poof* we didnt.  And to answer the initial question, Belinda fared far better.

PS:  No Viking Metal in my musical lexicon.  Hopefully the discovery of this MSOTW will be the totality of that. I havent clue #1...

The mystery song is out of my realm...no idea.

Belinda Carlisle still sounds pretty, and from the picture is quite "HOT"!

The album started out well for me.  The first 7 songs were all decent, and I liked Automatic Rainy Day best.  But then it stepped off the cliff.  The last 6 songs did absolutely nothing for me.  So, overall, a bit above 50 per cent on this one.

What I did notice that I really liked was the guitar playing, for example on the second track.  But really all the way throug.  It wasn't fancy, but it really fit and gave the music a little edge.

Wow, the Go's Go's! The first all girl band, I'm having to reveal all my secrets this week! I always thought Belinda Carlisle & Charlotte Caffey were Hot! I remember, I bought the "Beauty & The Beat" cassette, but I ended up giving it to the girl I was dating at the time, because I was embarrased to have that cassette in my collection. I never bought another cassette, but I still liked watching the videos & I secretely liked the music. I liked Belinda Carlisle's solo work, as well.

God Bless The Go Go's, it's a thumbs up for me! I liked it & the girls still look great! Belinda's vocals were good, as I expected & Charlotte's guitar playing added a little rock edge on most of the tracks.

I really liked MSOTW, I Love that type of music! It sounds epic, like a soundtrack. Nordic or Viking sounding maybe, the female voice sounds like I've heard it before, but I can't place where. This may be way off base, but It does sound like the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Anyway, I will be interested to hear the reveal!

You're forgetting the Runaways. Other than them, there has to be another all girl rock group (not the Supremes or anything like that) but I'm drawing a complete blank.

Yeah, and doesn't that song make you wanna grab a sword, find a boat and sail to a distant land so you can do some pillaging and plundering?

Something like this:

Vixen, The Donnas, and uh... uh, ok thats all I can think of

To clarify, I meant the Go Go's made history by becoming the first all-female band to write their own songs & play their own instruments. I remember the Runaways, with Joan Jett & Lita Ford. Michael (Micki) Steele of the Runaway's went on to join another all female band, the Bangles. Remember them?

Good recollection Scott! Vixen, The Donna's & I'll add one more, 4-Non Blondes.

I Loved the video!!! Viking Kittens sailing to Hammer Of The Gods, That's Great!!!

Uh.....The Bangles....Susannah Hoffs????

Yeah!!!

I now need to clarify..all girl groups BEFORE the Go-Go's, that's were I was going with the Runaways.

Now see who you can come up with.

I know, but I liked Scott's direction better 'cause your direction requires research.

Going back in Jon's direction, click HERE for the Wikipedia article concerning such all girl bands.
