Classic Rock Bottom

This month, just because I can, I'm going to overload everyone with Wishbone Ash. As some might have noticed, I have been on a serious Wishbone Ash kick recently, and have decided that everyone must, and should hop on the bandwagon and drink some of that Kool Aid!

This week we're going to start with their self-title debut album released in 1970, with their most famous album next week, then something from the 80's followed by a release from the 90's with and album from the 00's after that. And that's not it! No, no, no. That would be too simple. Just stay tuned.

Back to this first album though.....

If you like geetar, you'll like this album. But what about TWO geetars! Wouldn't that be better? I would say "YES!" And that's what you get! Two geetarists feeding off each other, woven together as one (?). Guess you can say they're a jam band, but not a meandering jam band. There is some heaviness, but mostly tasty geetaring (new word, I just made it up).

About 15 years ago when I was at Best Buy (again, when they mattered) I saw a copy of "The Best Of Wishbone Ash" and, even though I had heard of them, I never really listened to them. As a bonus, the cover had a red Flying V, surrounded by other red Flying V's which piqued my interest.

When I listened to it, I was blown away and my quest for more Wishbone Ash started. However, finding albums was a pain so I put off my search until 2002 when I saw the album to be featured next week at BB (of course, when they mattered) and bought that and was in awe once again.

Other albums were hard to come by due to the asking price, but that changed recently. I have no idea how many I've been able to pick up this year alone, but it's at least 10. It's a disease, but I disease I like.

So there you go. Hopefully you'll jump on the Wishbone Ash bandwagon, especially if you've never listened to them before.

That'll give you the names of the band members (past and present) at least.....

Wishbone Ash

1. Blind Eye

2. Lady Whisky

3. Error Of My Ways

4. Queen Of Torture

5. Handy

6. Phoenix

Availability: If you want this album, get the import version from BGO. It's around $11 but sounds much better than the MCA release from what I've read.

My older brother, who is a music nut also, loves this band thought I dont recall him owning any!  hmm....

I am very interested in this series!

Though the album sounds dated it has a character about it.  But it got off to a pretty cool start with Blind Eye and then really picked up with "Error of my ways" - loved that one for some reason, I guess maybe your right, geetar was nicely done and produced.  Handy and Phoenix sounded like they came right off the stage at Woodstock!  Groovy man!  Just outta-sight righteous!

Best Song:  Error of my Ways

Worst Song:  Queen of Torture

So I am actually quite excited to see how this band progresses and matures!

Nice pick Jon and nice theme and great chick pic!!!  Actually really great chick pic!

So, you want more?

Cant believe Im saying this...

Yes Please!

Can I just say Ditto? I completely agree with Scott's review of this album! He's dead on & my review would be basically, the exact same the thing.  Including, the Chick Pic. part!!!

Yes, yes, I agree with Scott and Mike.  The vocals were the weak part for me, but not weak enough to make me uninterested.  The guitar work was very groovy.  Looking forwar to more as well.
