Classic Rock Bottom

On my continuing quest to make things a bit more Wishbone Ash-y this month, I present to you their third album, 1972's "Argus".

This is probably their most well-known album (at least in the U.S.) and many say this is their best. Considering this came out 30 years ago and they're still putting out albums, wouldn't that make all their other albums, well, not THAT good? Just something to ponder for a bit.

This album, compared to their first (featured last week) is more proggy, less blue-based. You still get the dual-geetars, but now the lyrics are a bit more "mystical" I guess you can say.

If I were asked what Wishbone Ash album someone should own, it would be this one (followed closely by something to be featured in a couple weeks). I'm by no means a WA expert, but I knows what I like and me likey this and think you will too!

Argus

1. Time Was

2. Sometime World

4. The King Will Come

5. Leaf And Stream

6. Warrior

Totally blown away!  Loved all of it!  I can’t remember the last time you posted anything better!

And now for Wishbone Ash...  What? You thought I was talking about the music?  Always got to check the pic first!

So I listened to the first two tracks and I really really like this!  So off I went to the Zune marketplace to see what versions there were and I noticed a Remastered and Revisited as well as a Deluxe Edition.  So I listened to the rest from the Remastered and Revisited edition.  I was assuming you didn’t posted Remastered and Revisited since there were no bonus tracks...

Then I tried listening the same tunes from yours, then Remastered and Revisited and then Deluxe editions.  The production is very clean and the drums and bass really stand out on the Remastered and Revisited release. It sounds really crisp and modern yet still very much like Yes and early Floyd all at the same time!

I gotta say I’m in full purchase mode on this one and I really loved the sounds on the Remastered and Revisited edition.  It’s in my wish list now...

Very nice!  You and RJ posting cool stuff lately!  What’s up with that?

It's the remastered one that came out in '02. I didn't include the bonus tracks because they were live (they're good, but didn't feel they were needed for everyone to revel in the awesomeness of this album).

I don't know what's going on with the awesome postings of music. Sadly, one day it will just have to end. Probably from me, 'cause that's what I do.

And if you love this album, wait 3 weeks (even though those posted between now and then aren't bad at all), but that one in three weeks is just so incredibly GOOD, it blew my mind.

This is really good stuff Jon.  The previous album had more of a rough edge to it, with this one being more polished or produced.  The vocals seem a bit better on this.  But as with the previous post, the guitar playing here is phenomenal.  Gordon must check this out.  He's such a guitar freak, I couldn't imagine him not liking the work on this.

My favorite song was Sometime World.  Along with the fantastic guitar work, the bass work rules too.  This band might just deserve a mention on that Top 5 list we are currently working on.

Very good selection Mr. Stephenson.

And I forgot to mention how nice the pic was.

The album cover for Argus is very cool in my opinion.  Jon, is this a concept album?

According to the band, it isn't a concept album.

I'm really glad you guys are liking this, there's more to come, one which I think will absolutely blow your minds.

I agree, this is great! I've listened to it several times, trying to come up with a nice review, but all I got, was "This is Great!". I really liked the vocals on this one, they were "Mystical", like you mentioned, in your review. But, I'm all about Mystical songs that tell of fantasy, dragons & so forth! At times, the harmonies reminded me of Crosby, Stills & Nash. The guitar work was outstanding!

I agree with RJ, "Sometime World" was my favorite, but I liked them all! The songs were still playing in my head, on my way home from work yesterday. If the best is yet to come, I look forward to hearing it! Well, if you haven't noticed yet, I like it! Thanks, for posting!

I was thinking about Rjhog's question while driving in to work this morning (listening to, umm...Wishbone Ash) and with the album cover and the lyirics, it seems that it is a concept album.

Check out this article from Wishbone Ash website, it'll give more insight into the songs:

Isn't my Kool Aid tasty??

Really like this.  Have listened twice now.
