Classic Rock Bottom

Ladies and gentlemen, I is back!

Took a couple weeks off doing this because of the holidays and other stuff going on, but it's a fresh year and I have a fresh batch of albums to either introduce to you or reacquaint you with. How nice!

This week's pick is the 1989 "solo" album from then Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin. I guess you could say this came during some downtime for Yes since an album came out in 1987 with the next coming out in 1991, but who really cares? We're not talking about Yes.

But, this album sounds like 80's Yes, minus Jon Anderson's distinctive vocals. It's the same prog/hard rock hybrid, with Trevor's geetar obviously very prominent. If you don't like 80's Yes, then you won't like this album. If you do like 80's Yes, than you'll most probably like this album.

You might recognize the first two songs since they got some airplay (especially the second) so it might bring back memories. Or, if you're like me, it won't bring back memories. You'll just say something like, "Oh yeah. I remember this song. What the hell was I doing back then? Oh well, no matter, I've got better things to do then think about what I was doing way back then." And then a couple minutes later you'll say to yourself, "I remember! I was driving without a license and then this song came on the radio and I started driving really fast and the cops spotted me and pulled me over and then threw me in jail for a couple nights. All because of that damn song!"

MSoTW: This song is from a band that's been featured in MSoTW before. So, the band should be easy to figure out, but who's the singer?

I'm not much of a Yes fan, but this is very decent material.  I can definitely hear the influence of his parent band, especially in the backing vocals.  I don't know enough about Yes to know if the musicianship is influenced in the same way, but I imagine it is.  I love the intro, as it reminds me of Majestic by Journey.  Great intro.  Standout tracks to me are:

1. I Can't Look Away - see above for why I like this song

2. Something To Hold On To - just a nice overall song

3. Etoile Noir - No idea what that means, but I like it.

4. Eyes Of Love - fantastic chorus

5. I Miss You Now - cool little instrumental, would work very well on a massage mix cd

But I only see 11 tracks on the player, where is the song The Cape?

Nice post Jon.  This went well with my Sunday morning at work.  We are looking at 4-6 inches of snow overnight tonight, so we worked today in preparation for possibly being closed tomorrow.

Heard about the snow heading your way, good luck with that. We've been lucky in Michigan...so far.

Ok, it's been revised, tracks Etoile Noir & Eyes Of Love are actually one song. It's listed everywhere as two different songs except at Amazon. I didn't notice, but WMP doesn't even recognize The Cape as a song so it doesn't show on the player either. Why do they make things so difficult?

Love the Trevor Rabin pick.  Always found him to be a very impressive muscisian and song writer especially in the YES world.
"Could be married to the Queen, though". The singer (can't remember his name right now) from King's X??
"The" singer? Or "A" singer?
Well, at least we now know it's associated with King's X...Ty Tabor...
Nononononono, I was THAT close, and it was suppose to be a joke. The singer being homosexual, you see, "The queen" meaning gay in english......no no of COURSE, I was meaning Ty Tabor, the occasionally singer in King's X!!!! ....Or is it the other guy????
Let me quote Sgt Schultz with respect to my knowledge of Kings X and Ty Tabor.  ...  "I know nothinnnngggg" - I would have never gotten close to getting this one...

I'll give you guys Ty Tabor, only because Rjhog guessed..but what band is this? Niels should know this one, it's in your neck of the woods.

Look at my top ten albums of last year and you may just figure it out....

No, not really? "My neck of the wood"? Is'nt Ty Tabor american? And if you know your Fawlty Towers (John Cleese), I could also say "Churchill was'nt black?"(or african-american, nowadays)
He's doing guest vocals on this song. This band (or project) always has guest vocalists.
