Classic Rock Bottom

This week the pick is the 1980 release from Outlaws titled "Ghost Riders". Now, I had no idea that Niels was making an IMHO list of his favorite songs from 1980, so there is no collusion, no theme, no nothing. It just happened.

This is an album I always wanted to have, just because their version of "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky" kicks some serious ass and that album cover is so damned cool. However, I never bought it when it came out and waited for years before it was finally released on CD (more on that later).

The weird thing is that my brother bought this album when it came out. Why, I hae no idea. He was into stuff like Tomita, disco, and classical music. I could never get my hands on this album because I was barred for life from his room because that's just the way he was.

But good things come to those that wait, I suppose. Last year when I went home I asked to go through his record collection and salivated when I saw this album. He asked if I wanted it, I told him no (even though I really meant "YES!") and that was that. I asked why he had that album and he told me he didn't know, so that mystery was solved.

A couple weeks later, I received a package in the mail and there was the Outlaws album along with a bunch of other stuff I won't tell you about because you really won't care. So now I have the vinyl as well as the CD (again, more on that later).

This is mostly a hard rock record from beginning to end, not much of the "country" sound from past Outlaws (even though they did rock out quite a bit). There's some cool triple geetar duels going on througout the album which is right up my alley (the more geetars, the better!).

So there you go....another week and I don't bother telling you what the album is really like, what each song sounds like, etc., etc. What's the point? You'll make your own decision on whether you like this or not.

Did I mention that the cover art is really, really cool?

Ghost Riders

1. (Ghost) Riders in the Sky
2. White Horses
3. Angels Hide
4. Devil's Road
5. I Can't Stop Loving You (Though I Try)
6. Wishing Wells
7. Sunshine
8. Freedom Walk

Availability: Here's what you've been waiting for, maybe. There is an OOP CD that can be found for around $100.00 or you can track down the CD of "Playin' To Win"/Ghost Riders" on one CD fo about $20.00, but the remastering is not really that great, yet it's still listenable.

MSoTW: Last week's pick was half-guessed with the vocalist being Ty Tabor but the band was not. It's Ayreon, folks. A-Y-R-E-O-N. Remember it. This week's pick is from someone from a very popular band, try and think Oasis.

Ayreon?  Never heard of them...  And this weeks sounds like its gonna a similar direction for me.  The only thing I know about OASIS is that the Gallagher (sp?) brothers are super annoying.  Oh yeah, and that my sons friend only knows how to play the 3 chords from Wonderwall and plays them over and over and over! ...

So...  for the MSOTW...

1 - English guy/band?

2 - Im guessing that if its one of the aforementioned brothers that would be too easy?

For LAOTW...

That album cover should be in the top ten I posted, but I dont own this!  White Horses is so cool!  What a great track.  Love the chorus to Angels Hide...

Can comeone tell me about the track "Cant Stop Loving You"?  Is that original with this band?  I know Phil Collins did a remake, but thats a real standout track to me, my hidden gem for sure, love this version!

This was a fantastic listen.  And though its not the foirst time Ive heard, it has been a very long tim since I last did.  This time it really hit me in a very profound way!  Awesome from track to track.  My only complaint was that it was over way too fast, they needed another song or two.

Great LAOTW, maybe your best!!!  Top 2-3 anyway....

1. English

2.Absolutely no way is it Oasis

Yeah, it's a very short album, that's why they were able to throw two albums on one disc.

"Can't Stop Loving You (Even Though I Try)" is not an Outlaws original, it was written by Billy Nicholls and I believe it was first covered by Leo Sayer?

That was a good 'ole country/southern rockin' time.  I enjoyed it, until the last two songs that is.  They were just a bit on the "cheery message" side for me, but overall, I enjoyed this post.  I remember the Ghost Riders song, and I've actually been thinking about that version of it lately.  I just couldn't put my finger on the band that did that version.  My question has now been answered.  It's really my favorite version of the song.  I also really liked White Horses and Angels Hide.

I have no idea on the mystery song, but I do wanna play.  I don't really know anything about Oasis, so that clue doesn't help me.  So far we have that it's an English band.  I'm guessing the band is active within the last 15 years?  How many members in the band?

Oh yeah, that album cover is way cool....

They were active for AT LEAST 30 years.

5 member in the band, but there was some change, 2 defnitely were in the band from the beginning.

However....it's not a band effort, it's solo. You guys almost got me off track!

Well, we gotta come up with the band before we can advance to the solo artist....ya' know???

How 'bout, what's the first and last letter of the band name?

Now that's too easy....there's an "i" in their name, how 'bout that?

"but I do wanna play".. that cracks me up!

Oh yeah...think Van Halen too.

So think Oasis and Van Halen.

So the band has to do with the members of an english band that contains two brothers and this is one of those brothers solo, right?

Could it have something to do with the Kinks? They are supposed to be the godfathers of Britpop, and there's two brothers, Ray and Dave Davies, and Van Halen have recorded two of their songs "You really got me" and "Where have all the good times gone". Could it be Dave Davies????? There even is an "i" in his name!!!!
It has an 'i" in it?  So it is Oasis:-)
It is Dave Davies and I was using the "i" for The Kinks, but whatever.
