Classic Rock Bottom

Gotta give a big "shout out" to rocker Jon. HIs call on the new Lillian Axe..."bow down to its total awesomeness"....is right on. Just got this, and even though the NMC had 5 tracks, like Jon said, the entire record is killer.

Dont know if Neils has this, but it reminds me a little of Dream Theatre...so its seems kind of progressive to me. But, no disrespect to Dream Theatre...but this album flows along smoothly, and never seems too long or overblown. So...I guess I'm saying I like it better than the DT I have, or have heard.

So anyway, I listened to "The Days Before Tomorrow" as soon as I got it. Then I listened again. Great record! Great guitar! Fine vocals. Solid, solid production. Good songs! So I'm already thinking I gotta find out from Jon what other Lillian Axe is good.

Then I start thinking...hey, wait a minute...I've got an old Lillian Axe on cassette. So I'll have to find that soon and listen again. It's an early one, called "Poetic Justice", and I specifically remember two very good tunes from that release..."Innocence" and "True Believer".

So anyway, props to Jon on his "right on the spot" call! The new Lillian Axe is total in its awesomeness!

I guess I must get this.  I am really craving a guitar record, you know, one with some extended soloing.  Don't get me wrong, I still don't think anybody will top VH this year, but even Eddie's great soloing is limited on the album.  I want something that let's the guitar player stretch out.

Can't recall at the momemt if there are extended lead guitar sections, but every song has at least one, I believe. And the guy, Steve Blaze, is an excellent guitar player.

But, you did get the newest Dream Theatre, didn't you? I did not...but what I have by them has longer solos, longer songs, etc. The new singer for Lillian Axe has a sound that reminds me of the DT guy.

Yes, I did get the newest DT.  I can't say I've been a DT fan, but this album is good.  The first four or five songs are really good.  But some of them are just too long for me.  And it seems like a lot of them are slow and drag a bit as far as the second half of the album goes.  I thought the vocalist did a tremendous job on it.

I can't really explain what I'm looking for.  Just more feel than you get (at least in my opinion) with a DT album.  My best example is the song Save Your Love by Jefferson Starship from Modern Times:

Thanks Gordon, your kind words are much appreciated. I knew I could find a convert!

Gotta give props to Rjhog, Scott and Niels as well, without them I wouldn't have bothered with anything by Lake, City Boy, "The Captain And Me" from The Doobie Brothers, and many more.... They've all introduced me to bands and/or albums that I totally dig.

As for Lillian Axe, while "Poetic Justice" is good, it's one of those albums that one day I like, the next not so much. However, everything from "Psychoshizophrenia" on are must buys, especially if you like their latest release.

Oh yes! I've given other props as well...gotten a ton of excellent music from you guys...music I never would have owned had it not been for ya'll and this site.

If I could just find time...and knowledge...to post music myself, I certainly would.

But to RJ...the Starship tune above is a good example of an extended guitar lead. I have this Starship on vinyl, and that particular cut is a good one. And Scott posted some Starship in SHT...maybe the newest one, or the one before it, and it had a lot of guitar.

That is kind of a funny thing with Starship...they are not really known as a "guitar band" by lead guitar fans, but they actually kind of are!

Keep the rock a rollin'!!

Two side notes to this discussion about extended guitar work:

1. I haven't listened to the whole Flying Colors CD yet, but it's definitely heading into the right direction with the guitar work.  And while this has nothing to do with guitar work, I'm diggin' Portnoy's drumming.  It's not intrusive, but it's working well.

2.  Another example of an extended lead was the song from the song that Scott posted in the most recent post of SHT.  The song that I think I'm the only one who liked it by The Little River Band.

You guys want some extended lead geetar, check out some Wishbone Ash. Not just one lead geetar, no, no, no. There's TWO!

Of course there's Molly Hatchet with 79 trillion geetarists with extended solos, but that's another story.

Just want to clarify...  Your talking about the Jon on this site?  The same Jon that...

  • Is the only one on this site that likes Devin Townsend
  • Claims absolute musical truth (especially when refuting RJHog)
  • Has Viking rock and roll knowledge that rivals our own Dane (AKA Niels)
  • Hates Bob Seger but dwells somwhere in the Detroit area
  • Loves the Elder but loathes KISS (publically)
  • Denies posessing mutliple personalities, specifically one named Hypo Luxa
  • Was recently dubbed "Jonster"

That Jon?

Yes, that was the Jon I was speaking of...but now, I never said he was ALWAYS right about music!! He definitely had a good call on the new Lillian Axe.

Ive heard he is a pretty cool guy too regardless of what RJ says!

1. Devin Towsend is a genius, I tell ya!

2. Doesn't everybody (when it comes to refuting Rjhog)?

3. Actually have limited viking r&r knowledge, but think I have just enough. Maybe? Niels will kick my ass on the knowledge I think.

4. Yeah, true. But I'm not FROM Detroit or Michigan (then again, I don't like Bruuuuuce and come from Jersey)

5. Loathe is too strong a word. Not like a whole lot. But in the interest of full disclosure, I do have 8 Kiss albums (I think 8. Just say 8. Don't want to count'em since that means I have to LOOK at them)

6. I AM NOT HYPO LUXA!!!!!

7. Yes, I AM Jonster! I give you full credit for that

8. Would have looked better if I had started each reply with tiny boxes instead of numbers dontcha

think?
