‘Re-Machined,’ Deep Purple Tribute Album, Coming September 25

Metallica, Iron Maiden, Chickenfoot, Steve Vai and other artists will appear on Re-Machined: A Tribute to Machine Head, a Deep Purple tribute album scheduled to be released by Eagle Records on September 25.

The album, which features cover versions of every track on Deep Purple's classic 1972 album, also will feature appearances by Carlos Santana, Joe Bonamassa, Black Label Society, The Flaming Lips and two groups featuring Steve Vai, Chad Smith, Joe Elliott, Steve Stevens, Duff McKagan and former Deep Purple member Glenn Hughes.

Machine Head, one of hard rock’s most celebrated albums, features eight now-classic tracks, including “Smoke on the Water,” “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin’.” The tribute album features two versions of “Smoke on the Water” and “Highway Star.”

“We were asked if we’d contribute to the anniversary of Machine Head -- we can’t turn that down,” Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich toldLoudwire.com in a recent interview. “We’re circling the Dio and Purple catalogs and hopefully we’ll come up with something that is worthy of these wonderful men.” Metallica covered "When a Blind Man Cries" on the Deep Purple tribute album.

News of the album’s release comes soon after the death of former Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord, who died July 16.

In case you didn't see my question at the bottom, is anyone else thinking about picking this up in 2 weeks?

Umm...Flaming Lips? No.

And why not just buy the original Deep Purple album?

The Flaming Lips should be able to make the most interesting cover from this album. That's a fact.

I won't buy it, though.

Would like to have that Maiden cover but its not enough to buy the whole thing

I was at the music store (I has having a CD resurfaced that I purchased from Ebay) and found this. I went ahead and picked it up.

Smoke On The Water by Carlos Santana and Jacoby Shaddix (I don't know who J. Shaddix even is) sounds great. It is one of the best songs on the CD, and it is the first song? Highway Star by Chickenfoot starts out good, it has an intro like Bad Motor Scooter. Turns out, this is a live version (I think) cleaned up without the crowd. Or maybe they just recorded it to sound live? Anyway, Sammy drops the F-bomb at the first of the song, ruins it. I had high hopes for this cover, but I don't like it. Van Halen was my first favorite band.

More songs: Maybe I'm Leo, Pictures of Home and Never Before are OK. The second version of Smoke On The Water (flaming lips) is HORRIBLE! Why are there two versions of Smoke On The Water? This one SUCKS so bad compared to the Santana one. Lazy sounds pretty good with Jimmy Barnes and Joe Bonamassa. The Maiden and Metallica covers are just average, nothing special.

The CD ends with a different version of Highway Star with Glenn Hughes/Steve Vai and Chad Smith. This version is great! Sammy, why did you make such a crappy version of Highway Star?

I paid $13 or $14 for the CD, I don't remember. A few songs make OK driving music if you use an mp3 player in your car. Maybe I need to upgrade my HD radio/CD player? If you are using Spotify, you can find and listen to the CD there instead of buying it. Listen first, if you REALLY NEED any of the songs, get them from Itunes.

Shaddix is the lead singer for Papa Roach.
