Classic Rock Bottom

Welcome to Scott’s Hidden Treasures, attempt #2.  10 tracks you may hear for the first time or will enjoy getting reacquainted with.

By the way, Happy 4th of July, if you’re traveling and celebrating, please be safe!!!

For this week it would be easy to post stuff like , This Land is My Land by Woody Guthrie, Philadelphia Freedom by Elton John, Red White and Blue by Lynyrd Skynyrd, God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood, or Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen.  But that’s too easy and too predictable, I prefer to stay on task and post the best Hidden Treasures I can find…

Let’s get started …

Spaceship Superstar: Prism.  The Ron Taybak led version of this band is a hidden treasure, but let me focus on this track first.  The imagery is very cool…  Starship Limousines, Sold out shows in the Martian Astro-Bowl, and the coolest ever… Solar Powered Laser Beam Guitars!!!  But wait, it gets better, check out the synth solo that closes the tune out!

Lessons:  Rush.  From 2112.  The song opens with this lyric…  Sweet memories, flashing very quickly by, reminding me, and giving me a reason why…   A lot of acoustic guitar on this one, but has a great rhythm.

Human Race:  Red Rider.  In 1983 Red Rider was riding high off their ‘As Far As Siam” record.  Lunatic Fringe was a smash!  ‘Neruda’ was released to huge critical acclaim, but I think it fell flat in sales, at least compared to Siam.  But its really a very high quality record.  Check out this track as evidence!  The bass line is smokin’.

True Love True Confession: The Baby’s.  From their Union Jacks release, which from top to bottom is easily one of the best of the 80’s - Pure melodic rock at its best.  The Drum track is the hidden gem here.

Gettin’ Lucky:  Head East.  If you were a teenage male sometime in the mid 70’s then I’m not sure I have to explain why this track is a hidden treasure.  If you were from the mid-west, it may have been your theme song.  Ok, kidding aside, melodically I love Head East and the Hammond undertones on this track make it a great melodic rock song.

Say What You Will:  Fastway.  1983 and this release comes out and this is the “radio friendly” track.  Maybe heard it once or twice and picked up the album.  This is a personal hidden treasure, reminds me of lots great times with friends.

Precious Time:  Journey.  From Departure.  Songwriting was in top form on this one, you can feel the energy between Perry and Schon on this track.  They were really hitting a stride.  Why this track doesn’t get any attention is beyond me, but classic Journey nearing their peak.

Big Picture:  Loverboy.  Here’s one for the hardcore Loverboy fans.  In ‘97 the boys released a disc titled VI, this is the lead off track and it is head and shoulders above the rest of the tracks on this release.  However, there is some good stuff on there as well, but this is the treasure.  I can only find VI used, so this may be a rare one …

Heartbreak Warfare:  John Mayer.  OK, since this is SHT #2, I had to choose at least one tune that uses the “S” word, haha.  This one is all over the airwaves, but it also fits this list because if your like me you don't listen to the radio.  Like him or not, Mayer does some pretty good stuff, this one being at the top of the list for me.  Melodic, haunting, and catchy.

Our Country: John Mellencamp.  I had to end this list with this one, especially for the 4th of July.  Happy Birthday America!

Enjoy…

Another nice collection of obscure material Scott. The only tune here that I've heard is Mellencamp's "Our Country". Wasn't it on a television commercial?

What I like: The Rush tune. I'm starting to come around to this band. I'm still not 100% on Lee's vocals, but this song is very good. The Red Rider song reminds me of Tom Petty. Good choice.

What I really like - True Love Confessions by The Babys. This song is outstanding. I have The Babys Anthology, and this song may be on it. I'll have to check. John Waite has a great voice and I like the guitars on this as well. Journey's Precious Time. You are so right, Scott. This song is criminally underrated.

Biggest surprise - John Mayer. I've never heard a single song by him. I've never given him a chance. This song is pretty darn good.
Gee, thanks Scott. I had a song from "VI" ready to go in the next couple weeks as a mystery track. Now what's the point? Totally ruined it for me, kinf d worthless to put it up since you have the album and will guess right of the bat. Back to the drawing board.

That whole Fastway album would be a nice AOTW. Fantastic album, I even like the followup ("All Fired Up") now, but didn't back when it came out. Rjhog, you NEED to get Fastway's debut album. A definite classic.

I don't know about John Mayer...kind of made me sleepy. Not a bad song, but not something I would run out and buy.

And thanks again to Scott..."Hair Of The Dog" will just have to it and get moldy.
