Classic Rock Bottom

This subject has come up recently over in the New Music Corner, so I figured we should get everybody's thoughts on it.  Why do so many modern rock bands have vocalists that scream the vocals, instead of singing?  I don't really get it.  And some of these bands have vocalists that really can sing quite good.  Take the current NMC offering from Jon by In This Moment.  If you listen to all five songs, it's very obvious that Maria Brink has a beautiful voice and is an extremely talented vocalist.  Why screw this up with all of the screaming?  Another good example is Five Finger Death Punch.  I have both albums by this band, and in places, the vocals are quite good.  But then we have the screaming.

Actually, I can  pretty much still understand the vocals with FFDP, therefore I can somewhat get past this issue.  But sometimes I'll be on iTunes just listening to some samples, and all I hear is a garbled mess.  Does anybody know what the attraction here is.  And I would think with all of the screaming, the longevity of the vocalist can't be good.  My favorite songs are ones that I can drive down the road letting my incredible singing voice be heard by the masses.  Do kids today that listen to this actually drive down the road screaming out unrecognizable lyrics?  Somebody please explain this phenomenon.

Do you remember what your parents said about our music? Mine didnt get it. I think this is simply a generational thing, a new style that seperates us from them.

Although I dont care for the singing much, I appreciate that my sons (who love this stuff) have something to call their own. On the other hand, I try not to complain when they drive off with their windows down and the music blaring, afterall I did, and still do, the same thing. However... I will complain when they play it in the house for extended periods of time... I guess Ive become my Dad....
That's a good answer, Scott. I think it's so true about the generational thing. Though I don't think I've really noticed the screaming before now, but I don't like it at all.

But I guess your son's like (screaming) rock. My daugther likes Lady GaGa.
I doesn't bug me as long as it's not continuous. Check out Opeth, they have the cookie monster vocals as well as clean but the music is astounding. I think with ITM, it's something to differentiate them from the masses, and she does quite a fine job. I like it a heck f a lot better than that whining emo garbage that seems to clog up the charts.

After awhile you can understand what they're singing, it just takes awhile to get used to I suppose. And I'm 97 y/o so don't be calling me a youngster you whippersnappers!
