Classic Rock Bottom

VOTW - 10Cc

I remember listening to 10Cc on the radio from waaaayyy back in the start-70's, but I guess it was around "Wallstreet Shuffle" that I became a minor fan. A fan in the way, that I didn't really buy an album (my sister played the hits all the time), but I really liked what I heard, and then.....not enough to buy albums. When I heard City Boy a few years later, they had what I was looking for at that time: The same as 10Cc (and Styx obviously) but only heavier. I did eventually buy myself a 10Ccc-album. The first was a live-album (a single album) bought in 1990. It wasn't very good, and I don't know how many of the original members were still present. Then in 1997, I bought a Greatest Hits-cd, and I loved it, and played it countless of times, and still do occaisionally. In 2012 they released a box-set, and I bought that too, so I think I officially can call myself a 10Cc-fan by now. From wiki: 10cc are an English art rock band founded in Stockport who achieved their greatest commercial success in the 1970s. The band initially consisted of four musicians—Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme—who had written and recorded together for some three years, before assuming the name "10cc" in 1972.10cc featured two songwriting teams, one "commercial" and one "artistic". Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop-songwriters, who created most of the band's accessible songs. By way of contrast, Godley and Creme were the predominantly experimental half of 10cc, featuring an Art School sensibility and cinematic inspired writinEvery member of 10cc was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and producer, and the writing teams frequently switched partners, so that Godley/Gouldman or Creme/Stewart compositions were not uncommon. After Godley and Creme left the band in 1976, Gouldman and Stewart were the main creative forces behind 10cc. Stewart left the band in 1996, and Gouldman continues to lead a touring version of 10cc.Most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport and Strawberry Studios (South) in Dorking, with most of those engineered by Stewart. 10cc were co-managed by Ric Dixon and Harvey Lisberg at Kennedy Street, who had represented the individual members of the band since the mid-1960s.

DONNA

"Donna" is the first single by British art pop band 10cc. Released in 1972, it peaked at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was written by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme."Donna", a parody of doo wop songs[1] (see also "Donna" by Ritchie Valens), was originally written as a potential B-side to the song "Waterfall". The song features sharp contrasts between falsetto in the chorus (Creme) and deep monotone vocals (Godley) in the verse. The style in which "Oh! Donna..." is performed mimics that of the track "Oh! Darling" by the Beatles, from their album Abbey Road.Band member Eric Stewart has said: "We knew it had something. We only knew of one person who was mad enough to release it, and that was Jonathan King." The song was subsequently released on King's UK Records label. The band had considered releasing it under the name of "Doctor Father Part Two", resurrecting a band name they had used for their 1970 song "Umbopo". Band manager Harvey Lisburg said there was "a vague sort of plan at that time to keep on bringing out records under different names until they got a hit".

THE DEAN AND I

"The Dean and I" is a song by the art rock/pop band 10cc, from their 1973 eponymous debut album, written by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. The song was released as the third single from the album in August 1973 and peaked at No. 10 on the UK Singles Chart The single reached the top of the Irish Singles Chart on 20 September 1973.The album version of the song is slightly longer than the single version. Most of the material cut for the single release is from the introduction where the lyric on the album "Humdrum days and a humdrum ways" is sung repeatedly. The single version of the song can be found on the compilation Greatest Hits ... And More (2006)The first real lines of the song are "Hey, kids, let me tell you how I met your mom. We were dancing and romancing at the senior prom". The epic poem Paradise Lost by John Milton is mentioned in the lyrics. The song is a parody of 1960s commercial pop music[citation needed], notably of the Beach Boys where the line "And then I kissed her" is sung in a style similar to the band's 1967 hit single "Then I Kissed Her". "High School Confidential" by Jerry Lee Lewis was said to be an inspiration for part of this song.[citation needed] The song uses a number of American English expressions and Creme sings with a strong American accent.A 1974 performance of the song appears on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. The audio portion of a vintage mini-documentary chronicling the recording of the song in the studio was included in the limited edition 10cc box set "Tenology" in 2012.The single released in Germany featured an alternative picture sleeve with the "balloons and bomb" logo which had been used for the album.

WALLSTREET SHUFFLE

"The Wall Street Shuffle" is a single by the British pop/rock band 10cc released in 1974. The song originally appears on the band's 1974 album Sheet Music. It was the most successful single to be released from the album, reaching No. 10 on the UK chart. The song features a classic rock riff and lyrics that deal with Wall Street and the economy. It features several topical cultural references and specifically mentions Getty, Rothschild and Howard Hughes. The song remains popular with fans and is often performed live in concert. A live performance was included on the 2007 promotional live compilation The Best of 10cc Live.

I'M NOT IN LOVE

"I'm Not in Love" is a song by English group 10cc, written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman. It is notable for its innovative and distinctive backing track, composed mostly of the band's multitracked vocals. Released in the UK in May 1975 as the second single from the band's third album The Original Soundtrack, it became the second of the group's three number one singles in the UK between 1973 and 1978, topping the UK singles chart for two weeks. The song was also the band's breakthrough hit worldwide, reaching number 1 in Ireland and Canada and number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, as well as reaching the top ten in Australia, New Zealand and several European countries.Written mostly by Stewart as a riposte to his wife's declaration that Stewart did not tell her he loved her often enough, "I'm Not in Love" was originally conceived as a bossa nova song played on guitars, but the other two members of the band, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, disliked the track and it was abandoned. However, after hearing members of staff continue to sing the melody around their studio, Stewart persuaded the group that they should give the song another chance, to which Godley replied that for the song to work it needed to be radically changed, and suggested that the band should try and create a new version using just voices."I'm Not in Love" has enjoyed lasting popularity, with over 3 million plays on US radio since its release, and it won three Ivor Novello Awards in 1976 for Best Pop Song, International Hit of the Year, and Most Performed British Work. It has featured in the films The Virgin Suicides, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

GODMORNING JUDGE

Deceptive Bends is the fifth studio album released in 1977 by rock band 10cc.The departure of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme in 1976 to form Godley & Creme almost ended 10cc. However Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman kept the group alive as a duo (with the assistance of percussionist Paul Burgess). The cover design was provided by Hipgnosis. The name of the album came from a warning sign for dangerous curves on the southbound A24 between Leatherhead and Dorking in Surrey; the sign is no longer there.Stewart recalled: "I had a big challenge ahead of me to prove to the record world that we were not just 5cc, as some of the British media had graciously called us. The music was simpler than some of the previous 10cc albums, it was far more direct, streamlined and positive. The whole album was recorded very (in our terms) quickly. I was on a mission, and flying higher and faster than I had ever been before, and I knew by then that we had a very strong album. The new songs played a big part in the equation of course, I was out to prove also that we could write a hit album without Kevin and Lol ... we did!"Godley and Creme were still band members early in this album's history. The band's original line-up debuted a live version of "Good Morning Judge" at the Knebworth Festival on 21 August 1976 and also did studio work on an early version of "People in Love" referred to as "Voodoo Boogie". "Voodoo Boogie" featured a more offbeat arrangement and prominent backing vocals by Creme, but the track was considered "awful" when assembled, and Godley and Creme left the group shortly thereafter. The official versions of "Good Morning Judge" and "People in Love" were performed by Stewart and Gouldman alone, with the help of a few session musicians, for the eventual album release. The "Voodoo Boogie" version of "People in Love" was included in 10cc's limited edition box set Tenology in 2012.The first single taken from the album, "The Things We Do for Love", reached No. 6 in the UK Singles Chart, No. 2 in Ireland and No. 1 in Canada.

Now youre talkin!!

DONNA and THE DEAN AND I ... Ive tried to get into the songs Ive heard from their debut, but its not for me. Its unique, but its not 10cc as far as Im concerned. Still very interesting to see the band play and interact knowing how the relationships turned out.

WALLSTREET SHUFFLE ... Thats more like it! And I know Godley and Cream were supposed to be the cool ones and all but this is the voice I associate with the band. mostly because Deceptive Bends was my intro to them. But I like this tune it has that pop-art-rock feel that works best for my musical tastes. Sheet Music is a release Im not familair with but will look into.

IM NOT IN LOVE ... What a unique song for the time it came out. So spacy, bizarre and catchy! ANd from a cool album too! Great video too.

GOOD MORNING JUDGE ... This song has been featured on SHT before and when Michael Andrade was posting his shows on here he also was a 100c nut! No arguiing with good tase.

Quirky cool band, their releases post Bloody Tourists are hit and miss but one titled Ten Out of 10 is awesome and recommended for any fan of this era. Nice post Niels!

10cc, to me, is a band that did a slow song that I don't like (I'm Not In Love, or something along that line), and The Things We Do For Love, which is a terrific pop song.  Other than that, I'm lost.

Donna - This is not good.  Nowhere close.  It's not even a good parody.

The Dean And I - Another parody?  Geez.  I know this band has some fans here (Scott, Jon and Niels), but I don't get it at all.  I can see this sounding somewhat like the Beach Boys, but the BB's would have sounded much better.

The Wall Street Shuffle - I can say this is better than the first two choices, but it's not something I can see myself ever getting into.

I'm Not In Love - There it is.  I know this was a big hit for the band, but it's quite an annoying song.  I will say that it was creative, but if I never hear it again I'll be okay.  The lyrics aren't bad.

Good Morning Judge - Well finally, something decent to listen to.  I dig the bass playing here, and I do hear a bit of guitar in there.  The song is pretty lively and actually, the finger picking on the solo has a definite country music flavor. Surprised you guys would even give this the time of day because of that.  Easily the best song featured.

Well, for a time I was thinking about picking up some 10cc and seeing what all of the fuss was about.  Thanks Niels, you just saved me some money and time.
