VOTW - DAVE GROHL ON DRUMS

Dave Grohl is.....probably my favorite drummer of all time. For years, I've said it was John Bonham, but I've changed my mind. Grohl is a much better technical drummer. Bonham had an amazing power, but Grohl plays the drums like a lead-instrument, kind of like Keith Moon, but again, he's a better drummer than Moon as well IMO. Then why doesn't he stay behind those drums?!! The drumming he did on QOTSA's album "No Songs For The Deaf" was some of the best drumming I've ever heard!! Foo Fighter's should NOT be his "daytime job" IMO. Since last week's VOTW had a couple of video's with Grohl as well, there won't be any Them Crooked Vulture's-video, but there're also enough to pick from:

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE (1985)

The clip begins with Dave Grohl already behind the camera 30 years ago. This was shot by Sohrab Habibion whose documenting of shows during that period was substantial. His tapes have been donated to the DC Public Library's new DC Punk Archive.

SCREAM (1987)

Coming on the tail end of the initial D.C. hardcore explosion, Scream formed in 1982 and signed to Dischord Records. That fall, the original lineup of the Stahl brothers, singer Peter, guitarist Franz and bassist Skeeter Thompson and drummer Kent Stax teamed with Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara to produce the raucous Still Screaming. The original group went on to release This Side Up in 1985 and Banging the Drum in 1987. That year, Scream switched to Ras Records, a D.C. reggae label trying to expand into rock, and gave an 18-year-old drummer his first shot with a touring band. Dave Grohl's drumming and backup vocals can be heard on No More Censorship, released in 1988. Grohl began showcasing his writing talents on Fumble, recorded in 1989 and released posthumously in 1993. When the band went on indefinite hiatus in 1990, Grohl went off to Seattle to join then-underground Nirvana. Scream reunited, sans Grohl, to tour briefly in the early '90s. Franz Stahl joined Grohl in Foo Fighters from 1997-1999.

NIRVANA - LITHIUM

"Lithium" is a song by American rock band Nirvana. Written by frontman Kurt Cobain, the song is about a man who turns to religion amid thoughts of suicide. Nirvana first recorded "Lithium" in 1990 but then re-recorded the song the following year for the group's second album Nevermind (1991).Released as the third single from Nevermind in July 1992, "Lithium" peaked at number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. The accompanying music video, directed by Kevin Kerslake, is a montage of concert footage.

FOO FIGHTERS - I'LL STICK AROUND

Foo Fighters is the debut studio album by American alternative rock band Foo Fighters, released on July 4, 1995, by Capitol Records through Dave Grohl's label Roswell. Grohl wrote and recorded the entire album himself – with the exception of a guest guitar spot by Greg Dulli – with the assistance of producer Barrett Jones at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. Grohl claimed he recorded the album just for fun, describing it as a cathartic experience to recover from the death of his Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain. After Grohl completed the recordings, he chose the name "Foo Fighters" for the project to hide his identity and passed cassettes copies of the sessions to personal friends. After said tapes attracted record label interest, Grohl signed with Capitol and recruited a full band to perform the songs live. The album was promoted through extensive tours and six singles, two of which received music videos. Foo Fighters earned positive reviews praising the songwriting and performances, and was also a commercial success, becoming the band's second-best-selling album in the United States and reaching the top five in the charts of United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - NO ONE KNOWS

Songs for the Deaf is the third studio album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. Released on August 27, 2002, the album features Foo Fighters and former Nirvana member Dave Grohl as a guest drummer. Like their other albums, Songs for the Deaf has a large number of guest musicians, a signature of the band's releases. The album garnered critical acclaim, and the band earned its first gold record certification in the United States, after selling 986,000 copies. One million copies of the album were sold in Europe, earning the band a platinum certification from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in 2008.Songs for the Deaf is loosely considered a concept album, taking the listener on a drive through the California desert from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree while tuning into radio stations from towns along the way, such as Banning and Chino Hills.

TENACIOUS D - TRIBUTE

Tenacious D is the first studio album by American comedy rock band Tenacious D, released on September 25, 2001 by Epic Records. The album's polished production was a departure from the band's acoustic origins, due in part to the production of the Dust Brothers."Tribute" was the first single released from the album, followed by "Wonderboy". Both singles had music videos filmed for them, with the Liam Lynch–directed Tribute video achieving cult status. While Tenacious D did not achieve chart success after its release, it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America by the end of 2005. Despite only peaking at #38 in the UK, it had sold 426,000 copies countrywide by 2006.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE ... hahahaha, thats freakin awesome, even if the style isnt in my wheelhouse, to watch this was a blast! I wonder how many drum kits he's trashed just by beating the snot out of them.

SCREAM ... ditto Mission Impossible. And I do recall that the Foo Fighters talked about that period when Franz joined them, but I dont think it was a joyous reunion. I hate thrash, really do, but I watched these!

NIRVANA - LITIUM ... I'm not much of a Nirvana fan. I find them depressing and boring. I think Cobains guitar shows up in several worst lists on youtube. But what do I know they chnaged the face of music, and while I understand why it happened, when it happened, I still dont quite get why Nirvana was the band that ushered that change in.

Most drum solos are just a bunch of noise, Dave Grohl included.  But he really gets into it and he's a very powerful drumming.  You can tell he really loves doing it.  The best clip in the drum solo bit was the second clip.

I can't believe that I actually bought a Tenacious D album.  Jack Black has learned to get a bit on my nerves.  I can appreciate what they are doing, but I'd rather listen to Americana at this point.

QOTSA - This is definitely one of their best songs.  I used to have this on CD, but I think it has disappeared somewhere along the way. And yes, Grohl's drumming is very tight here.  He looks so goofy with short hair...

FF - Awesome band.  Even though this was not a band at the time.  The fact that he recorded the entire album on his own shows just how talented he is.  It definitely sounds like him on the drums.  But make no mistake about it, he should be singing.

Nirvana - I really liked Nevermind when it was released, but I never listen to it now.  Never.  The drums sound thin, maybe it was intentional.  I never noticed it before.  Almost like he should be using more cymbals.

Scream - Seriously, that's worse than noise.  I have no interest in this junk.

MI - And Niels complains about wasting his time...

Seriously, I totally dig DG as a multi-talented musician.  But I'll take a FF album over any of this other stuff any day of the week.

FOO FIGHTERS - I'LL STICK AROUND ... Cool bass line, more melodic than any Norvana song and far more entertaining band! Best viodeo and song here so far...

QOTSA - NO ONE CARES ... The one song Im most familiar form this band ad while I do like this song and video, I would never consider the album, just dont think the song writing can be as goods as this one.

TENACIOUS D - TRIBUTE ... Funny but too much of it get overbearing.

The drum solos was a fun video, but does he approach the level of Bonham, Peart, Portnoy? Not even a hint.... Still I do love me some Foo!!!
