VOTW - MARILLION

Marillion is an english band, that was kind of big (in Europe) in the 80's, especially after their hit, Keyleigh from 1985. I have no idea, how known they are/were in the US? I first noticed them around 1983, again in my, at the time, favorite rock-magazine Kerrang!, maily beacuse the singer (again at the time) Fish, had full make-up on his face on stage. I read in the magazine, that a lot of the old Genesis-fans claimed, that Marillion was just a copy of Peter Gabriel-fronted Genesis, and I could see and hear that, after listening to the first 2 albums again at a friends house. In 1985, I decided to buy "the new album", Misplaced Childhood, and I didn't like it at all, so I ended up selling the album to my friend (the Marillion-"fan"). But then in the summer of 1987, they released yet another new album, Clutching At Straws, and in Kerrang!, I read, that it was their best album so far, and I decided to give them another try. This time, I really liked the album, and still it's my favorite Marillion-album by far (I love a good concept-album). Sadly Fish left the band, and they got a new singer (imo a singer without charistma and soul), but still I kept buying albums for a while. I might also buy the up-coming album, who knows. Now, they don't sound as Genesis at all in my ears. Oh, and I've added 7 video's this time. You probably can't see them all in the US anyway, but give it a try:

GARDEN PARTY

"Garden Party (The Great Cucumber Massacre)" is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was the second single released from their debut album Script for a Jester's Tear. It reached number 16 in the UK Singles Chart in 1983, the band's biggest singles chart success prior to 1985. The song is a parody of social elitism and snobbery. The B-side is a live version of "Margaret" (recorded at Edinburgh Playhouse, 7 April 1983). The 12" single includes a live version of "Charting The Single" (recorded at Hammersmith Odeon, 18 April 1983).

SCRIPT FOR A JESTER'S TEAR

Script for a Jester's Tear is the debut studio album by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion, released in 1983. Produced by Nick Tauber, it was recorded between December 1982 and February 1983 at The Marquee Studios in London. The album was a commercial success peaking at number 7 on the UK Albums Chart and eventually going Platinum.Script for a Jester's Tear was intended to be part of a trilogy along with the next albums, Fugazi (1984) and Misplaced Childhood (1985).This is the only Marillion album featuring drummer Mick Pointer who later became a founding member of the neo-progressive rock band Arena.

ASSASING

"Assassing" is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was the second single from their second studio album, Fugazi (1984). The single reached no. 22 on the UK singles charts in May 1984.[1] The 7" single's title track is a heavily edited version of the first track on Fugazi, with a length of 03:39 as opposed to the album version with 07:01. The B-side is the non-album track "Cinderella Search".The lyrics of the song, which feature a narrator-character describing himself as an assassin, appear to concern character assassination. The lyrics are full of metaphors alluding to verbal fighting, for example, "unsheath the blade within the voice." The lyrics are generally interpreted as a reference to the verbal arguments that preceded band founder and drummer Mick Pointer's departure from the band. The international 12" version contains both the full album version and the edited version of the title track; the latter is missing from the UK release. The b-side also appears in a significantly longer version.

HEART OF A LOTHIAN

Misplaced Childhood is the third studio album by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion, released in 1985.Recorded during the spring of 1985 at Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin and produced by Chris Kimsey, who had previously worked with the Rolling Stones, Misplaced Childhood has been the group's most successful album to date, peaking immediately at number one in the UK charts, spending a total of 41 weeks on the chart, and ultimately gaining the Platinum status. It features Marillion's two most successful singles, the guitar-led rock ballad "Kayleigh", which reached number two in the UK, and piano-led "Lavender" which peaked at number five. The album's positive reception included its selection as one of the best of 1985 by rock publications Sounds and Kerrang!. It was later named one of the best concept albums of all time by Classic Rock. According to John Franck from AllMusic, the album was the band's "most accomplished" and "streamlined" work to date, while Ultimate Classic Rock has called it "the cornerstone of the entire 'neo-prog' movement"

SUGAR MICE

Sugar Mice is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was the second single from their fourth studio album Clutching at Straws. Released on 13 July 1987, it peaked at number 22 in the UK Singles Chart, becoming the band's 8th top-thirty hit in a row. Outside the UK, it was released in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, West Germany and (on Capitol Records) in the USA and Canada. A number of formats were available: 7" single, 7" picture disc (containing a fold-out sleeve with a poster), 12" single, 12" picture disc. 3,000 copies of a 5" CD single were produced that were exclusively sold at concerts

INCOMMUNICADO

Incommunicado is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was the lead single from their fourth studio album Clutching at Straws. Released 11 May 1987, it reached number six in the UK Singles Chart, becoming the band's third top-ten hit, the last until 2004's "You're Gone". It became a minor hit on the Dutch Top 40 reaching number 31. The A-side is a fast, anthemic rock song with a repetitive chorus and a dominant keyboard sound, somewhat reminiscent of "Market Square Heroes". The extended version on the twelve inch and CD singles is slightly longer than the album version and features some additional sound effects. The b-side, the short, slow and introspective "Going Under", would also appear as a bonus track on the CD version of Clutching at Straws, in a slightly different version. Both tracks were written and arranged by Marillion and produced by Chris Kimsey. The line "Currently residing in the where-are-they-now file" is a reference to a scene in the film This Is Spinal Tap.

THE UNINVITED GUEST

"The Uninvited Guest" is the second single from English band Marillion's fifth studio album Seasons End, released in 1989. A fairly straightforward rock song, it was the band's first single since their debut "Market Square Heroes" in 1982 that failed to enter the UK Singles Chart's top 40, peaking at no. 53.

GARDEN PARTY...  I had a co-worker/friend that was into this band when I arrived in North Carolina in 1998, and though I had heard of them, I had heard very little of them.  Now I have all the Fish albums and a couple more, and I like them alot.  Garden Party is not the best song on that debut album, not even the second best.  Its more of the OK song on there.  But the video was interesting!

more to come...

SCRIPT FOR A JESTERS TEAR ... This album is cool! He's certainly a very eccentric singer, a Peter Gabriel influence no doubt.  I do love their debut album though.

ASSASSING ... At first glance one may think this track is about asses. Its not.  It is my favorite track off of Fugazi though, think I featured this once as well.  Fish is the singer right?  Strange dude indeed.

HEART OF LOTHIAN ... I like the prog feel of this and its the third really good album they put out.  I would agree with the reviewers you cite.  The bands image and sound really gel on this album.

SUGAR MICE ...  And here we have the required power ballad.  I do like it however, the guitar work is nice.

the other two vids don't play over here...  But I liked this post a lot.  These first 4 albums are must haves IMO
