VOTW - SLADE Special

I'm of the generation (in Europe), where you either was a fan of The Sweet or Slade, or I might be 2 or 3 years too young, because I never was a real fan of either of the bands. But my sister, who's 2 years older than me bought albums by both bands, and as I've said before, I was much more drawn to the music The Sweet was playing (which was heavy rock in the making, especially the album "Fanny Adams")) than the album "Slayed", which my sister bought (also). But the hits from Slade, that were played on the radio were at least as good as the hits from the Sweet, and these are some of my favorites:

THANKS FOR THE MEMORY

Probably my favorite Slade-song. I clearly remember this song, as perhaps the second song ever, to have on my casette-player (the first one was Sweet with "Fox On The Run"). Thanks for the Memory (Wham Bam Thank You Mam) is a single from rock band Slade. It was written by lead singer Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea. The single was released in 1975 and peaked at #7 in the UK, spending 7 weeks on the chart and only one week in the top 10.This became Slade's last top ten hit for 6 years. It is notable for the use of keyboard - at the time new to a Slade single although piano and organ had been used in previous material. Record Mirror magazine voted the single #10 on the top 10 best singles in February 1976.The song appeared on the American version of the 1974 album Slade in Flame, which was released via Warner Bros. Records during 1975.

TAKE ME BAK' OME

"Take Me Bak 'Ome" is a popular single by Slade.Written by Jim Lea and Noddy Holder and produced by Chas Chandler, "Take Me Bak 'Ome" was the second of Slade's six UK number one singles spending a single week at the top in July 1972. The single took 5 weeks to reach the top and was last seen on the charts at #49 on 26/08/1972. It stayed in the top 100 for a total of 13 weeks.A total of five different artworks were created for the single.By October 1972, the band had received two UK Silver Discs for the single.

EVERYDAY

"Everyday" is a single from glam rock band Slade that appeared on the album Old New Borrowed and Blue, and was written by the usual collaboration of lead singer Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea. The single was released in 1974 and peaked at number 3 in the UK, spending seven weeks on the chart, the shortest time of any charting Slade single at that time. The single's first week upon release peaked at number 6 and stayed in the top 10 for four weeks. Everyday marked a change from Slade's usual style. The public did not expect a ballad to be released and - with the exception of "Far Far Away" - Slade would not reach higher than number 3 in the UK again until 1983's "My Oh My".The single was certified UK Silver by BPI in April 1974.The single was awarded a Silver Disc only three days after its release. The Record Mirror polls of early 1975 voted "Everyday" in the top ten singles poll.

CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE

"Cum On Feel the Noize" is a rock song originally released by Slade in 1973.Written by Jim Lea and Noddy Holder and produced by Chas Chandler, "Cum On Feel the Noize" was Slade's fourth number-one single in the UK and their first to enter straight at number one. As a single from Slade, it was a follow-up to "Gudbuy T' Jane", a no. 2-hit in the UK.The single's B-side "I'm Mee, I'm Now, and That's Orl" was voted no. 3 of the top three Slade B-sides in the Slade Fan Club Poll of 1979.The song was also a 1983 hit for heavy metal band Quiet Riot. The title is also often spelled as "Come on Feel the Noise", due to common spelling or censorship reasons (due to the spelling "cum" being latter-day common slang for ejaculation).

GOODBYE TO JANE

"Gudbuy T' Jane" is a hit single from glam rock band Slade released in 1972. It was written by lead singer Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea and appeared on their album Slayed?. The single peaked at #2 in the UK, losing the number one spot to Chuck Berry's single My Ding-A-Ling. It did however, peak at #1 in the New Musical Express charts. Slade's two previous singles had charted at #1 in the UK. The single lasted 13 weeks in the top 100. It stayed in the top 10 from the moment it was released for 8 weeks. The single was also the most successful of Slade's 1970's singles in the United States, peaking at #68. It wouldn't be until 1983 when Slade's single "My Oh My" would beat that position. The single peaked at #1 on the NME singles chart. The single was awarded a UK Silver Disc in early 1973.In 1981, drummer Don Powell was asked in a fan club interview for his three favourite Slade songs. Powell stated "Far Far Away", "Standin' on the Corner" and "Gudbuy T'Jane" as his favourites.

Thanks For The Memories - That dude has got some serious sideburns.  I can't say I care that much for this song, but I will say that the bass playing is top notch. But I don't care how good he is, he cannot play the bass and the keyboards at the same time.  Those twin leads are pretty sweet as well.  Overall, a fair song, but nothing that moves me.

Take Me Back 'Ome - I like this one much better.  This has a bit of a Stones riff.  The drummer looks just like Tommy Lee, who is also a drummer.  Coincidence?  This band definitely looks like they were a lot of fun.  I like the video, believe it or not.  And the guitar player has Ace Frehley's boots on.

Everyday -  Like this one too.  This song certainly shows that Holder was a heck of a vocalist.  But the guitar player just cracks me up.  What in the world does he have on?  And, if you cut his hair, he would look just like Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber.  And I told you the bass player could not play bass and keyboards at the same time.

Noize - Well, you know I've heard this one before.  I will say that this version sounds better than my introduction to the song by Quiet Riot.  Oh, and thanks so much for clearing up the confusion regarding the spelling...Seriously though, Holder can definitely sing, and you can see why this song was absolutely perfect for Quiet Riot to ride to the top.  Dubrow really sounds just like Holder.  But the underrated dude again is the bassist.  Outstanding work.  Lloyd Christmas is just killin' me.

Jane - Best song here.  Awesome hook and vocals.  And Jim Lea is just kicking ass on the bass.

Overall thoughts - I've never had the slightest interest in listening to Slade.  No particular reason why, I just haven't felt the need to.  I'm not saying this week's post will or won't change that, but I will say I've gotten an instant appreciation for Noddy Holder's singing and for Jim Lea's bass playing.  And since the two wrote most of the band's songs, maybe a greatest hits disc is in order...Nice post Niels.  I didn't think I would like it, but after that first track, I really did.

Thank you

"...(due to the spelling "cum" being latter-day common slang for ejaculation)."

Yeah, I probably should had left that out.

Jim Lea was probably the most talented guy in that band, I assume he wrote all the music, while Holder wrote the lyrics.

KISS were very much inspired by these guys.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORY ... I guess they take it one memory at a time. I thought the tune was cool and fun. But fun is the way I see this band always. Everyone looks like theyre having a blast and thats what this band feels like everytime I see and think of them

TAKE ME BAK 'OME ... The guitarists antics and haircut get the focus, he a blast to watch. Their production and their sound is bit ahead of its time in 1972, corect me if Im wrong, but it sounds like a modern mix. I like it...

EVERYDAY ... I can see them wanting to try something different but I miss the upbeat fun and craziness that they bring. Even though the outfits are cool, and the song isnt really that bad, its too subdued.

CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE ... The song that introduced America to Slade by way of Quiet Riot of course. But its very cool to go back and hear and see them play this (except the twerking part). I bet they made a fortune off of it too. Then they did the smart thing and released an album that fared pretty well over here. Two singles that I still enjoy hearing - Run Run Away and My Oh My...

GUDBUY T' JANE ... I bet these guys were a hoot to see live. I like it! Even if the beats are similar and the riffs interchangeable, I dont care, these guys are cool, unique, and out for a good time.

Cool post, but youre missing RUN RUN AWAY!!
