Video's of the week #19

Another week gone, and it's time for yet another VOTW, and like last week, there will be 4 new video's and 2 classic. I don't know how cheasy you can call the two classic video's, but I like them, so there.

And remember: There CAN be some language that's not suitable for kid's ears.

1. Helloween - Are You Metal

With Halloween just around the corner, I think it's suitable to start with this one. Helloween was founded in Germany in the mid '80's, and this is a song from their new album "7 Sinners", that was released october 11, 2010.

2. The Dead Weather - Die By The Drop

Jack White and co. with a song from their latest album, "Sea Of Cowards" released in may, 2010. The video of the song was directed by Floria Sigismondi who also directed "Blue Orchid" by The White Stripes and "Broken Boy Soldier" by The Raconteurs. It is the band's first official video to show all of the Dead Weather members playing their instruments.

3. Deftones - Diamond Eyes

The title-track from the sixth album from the american band, released in may, 2010. The video was directed by Robert Schober, if anyone should care.

4. Grand Magus - At Midnight They'll Get Wise

Grand Magus is a Metal-band from Sweeden. This song is the latest single from their album, "Hammer Of The North", released in june, 2010. During the band's 10-year history, the band has released two demos, one split EP and four full-length albums, and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews throughout. Their last opus, "Iron Will", was voted "Album of The Month" in the German Metal Hammer and Rock Hard magazines.

5. Billy Idol - Cradle Of Love

This is my favorite Billy Idol-song AND video. Even though the girl in the video WAS a bit young, I thought/think she's HOT!!

6. Mötörhead - Iron Fist

The title-track from the only Mötörhead-album, i ever bought, back in 1982. It was the final album to be recorded by the classic lineup: Lemmy, (Fast) Eddie Clarke and Phil(thy animal) Taylor.

HELLOWEEN... 0 stars
I think I heard these guys when they first come out. Headbangers Ball maybe? It wasn't good back then and its only improved to just OK today... I liked the girls in the video, especially with those really "Metal" Skull Candy earphones they were wearing. 1 star for hot chicks, and 1 star for Skull Candy headphones. However, to level this out, the band is average, so 0 stars, and then the songs isn't really working for me, so -1 stars. Oh Yeah! -1 more star because I cant find those earphones on Amazon.com...

THE DEAD WEATHER... 1.5 stars
Jack White always has something going on, and I really dig his experimental nature. So I give him .5 stars for an interesting song, thought the chorus and beat was pretty good at times, but not consistently good. 1 more star for the video though, thought it was pretty good.

DEFTONES... .5 stars
Was that the sister of IT from the Addams family that I seen? hmmmm... .25 stars each for song and video. Professionally done just not interesting.

GRAND MAGUS... 1 star
Whats a "Magus"? Cop glasses and a Rickenbacker Bass gotta count for something! Nice song too, not sure it stands out too much, but its better than most. Performance video was slightly below average. OK lets add this up... Cop Glasses = .33 stars, Rickenbacker Bass = .33 stars, Good song = .33 stars, Slightly Below Average Video= 0 stars. Round that up to 1 and were good to go to the next video...

BILLY IDOL... 2 stars, no cheese!
She looked 18 to me. And the dweeb guy is probably still alone in that apartment after all this time. Great Song and Great Video! 2 stars with no real cheese factor detectable by me.

MOTORHEAD... 0 stars with a cheese factor of 2
Mic stand 1 foot taller than the singer (I know.. its his thing man!), teased hair and single drooping earring on the drummer. That's at least 2 cheese points. Uninteresting song and same performance video as Ace of Spades. I'm not a Motorhead fan can you tell? They all sound the same to me. Therefore, 0 for both song and video.

Helloween-***1/2 (out of 4)
Wow. Heavy stuff from these guys. Docking 1/2 star for the subject matter since it's a bit cliche, but the video is cool, song is cool and it's HEAVY. Also dual-necked guitar!

The Dead Weather-0 stars
Can't stand The White Stripe so friggin' overrated. Therefore, I don't like Jack White. Therefore I don't like The Dead Weather. Female singer sounds like Siouxsie without The Banshees. Guess I could give it 1/2* for the video, but ain't gonna do it.

Deftones-**
Not a Deftones fan, but the song isn't too bad. Gotta give it some cheese for the sparkly stuff flying aound. Watching it I could only wonder if anyone did any owling during the shoot.

Grand Magus-****
Song is great, video is simplistic but seems to fit this band. Was gonna give it *** but a band that doesn't care that there's a bunch of power cords in sight is cool to me. And a fan. And mirror sunglasses. And Converse high tops. What more could you ask for?

Billy Idol-**
Overplayed on MTV when it came out and I'm still tired of it. Not bad, but kinda funny that you don't see all of Billy because he kind of got in a motorcycle accident and wasn't able to walk. Trivia: Directed by David Fincher.

Motorhead-**, cheese **
Typical early 80's performance video. But there is some cheese...Lemmy twirls a couple times, got the smoke, got the headbanging fans, Lemmy leans on Eddie for a sec...but it's Motorhead so is it really cheese? They might come to my house and kick my butt for saying that it is, so BRING IT ON!

Hmmm, I don't know. I thought we HAD some sort of a rating scale? The points go from -1 to +1 for song and the same for video, so the highest score should be 2 points, and the lowest -2 points.

But what about this:

-1 point = "I friggin' hate the video(or song)"
-0.5 points = "I really don't like the video( or song), but I CAN watch(hear) it"
0 point = "It does nothing for me. I don't really care".
0.5 points = "This is an okay song(video). I kinda like it".
1 point = "This is great. I really love this".

But remember to give points to BOTH the song and video.

Is that okay?

I'm a big fan of Helloween, but the song was merely okay and the video was crap.

Half a star for the video and the song as well. Does the video have anything to do with the Saw Movies?

The Dead Weather (1.5 stars)

One full star for the song. I like it. I really like the music. The vocals I'm still working on. I have this CD but haven't gotten around to listening to it yet. The video is average.

Deftones (0 stars)

There is nothing about this that I like. And to make matters worse, I have this album. I took a chance and it didn't work out. Their music is so monotone and without any sense of melody to me.

Grand Magus (1 star)

One star for the song. I like it. It's heavy but not thrash. The vocals are intelligible. So that's cool. The video is nothing to write home about. A very uninspired performance. Zero stars for the video.

Billy Idol (1 star/cheese factor 4)

Great video. She's at least 18, so I'm cool with it. I never liked the song. Zero for the song. I gave it a 4 on cheese because:

1. Billy Idol's face. I hate that snarl.
2. The dude in the video is a total goob, so 2 pts. for both of these factors.

Motorhead (1 star)

I've never really understood the appeal of Motorhead. I don't really get it, but because I have an open mind, I'll give the song a half star. It's really not bad. The video is also average, so I'll give it a half star. There's no cheese here at all.

I like the song, but not the cheesy lyrics (0.5 points). I don't care about the video, not good, not bad.(0 points).

The Dead Weather (0.5 points)

I don't like Jack White, and I don't really like this song. I'm glad, that I did'nt bought this album.(-0.5 points) I like the video, though. The best video (besides Billy Idol's) this week. (1 point).

Deftones - (0.5 points)

I don't care much for Deftones, but this song ain't that bad. (0.5 points) The video is booring, but not bad, just booring. (0 points)

Grand Magus - (0.5 points)

I like the song, but not THAT much. There's this sweedish sound over it, and I mean that in a good way. Maybe it has something to do with the production, I don't know. i SOUNDS good. (0.5 points). The video leaves me cold (0 point)


Billy Idol - (2 points)

Now THIS video do NOT leave me cold!! As I said: The 18-year old girl is very HOT!!!!! (1 point for the video). And also as I said, it's my favorite Billy Idol-song, not that I'm a fan, but this song, I really like (1 point) No cheesy points.

Mötörhead (1 point)

I've never been a fan, but the song is okay in my book (0.5 points) and the video is one of those good old one's but not cheesy at all (0.5 points)
