VOTW - EDDIE VEDDER

I haven't got much time for stuff like this tomorrow, so therefore VOTW is a day early:

Like so many others, I was blown away by Pearl Jam's debut in 1991 (I got it in the spring of ´92, as far as I remember), Ten. It's one of those debut-albums, that's so good, that the band never really made a better album, just like Van Halen, Cheap Trick and Guns'N'Roses (and Tesla), among others (IMO). The next couple of Pearl Jam-albums were good, but a bit dissapointing. Eventually, I stopped buying the albums around the year 2000, but I started up again a few years back, and actually I think now, that PJ have got some of their strenght back, and I respect them for keep making album after album, and not like soundgarden stop, and then 20 or so years after making a "comeback-album" that kind of sucked. It's easy to compare Vedder with Chris Cornell, since they (IMO) are the two most important singers of the 90's. For many years, Cornell was my favorite, but the last 10 years or so, Vedder have taking that role to keep. He has always seemed to me as a very honest singer/performer (and he's a major Who-fan), something that I can't say about Cornell anymore. Eddie Vedder's voice is very, very cool imo, and I will call myself a fan. I'm looking forward to a new PJ-album next. They are one of the bands, I regret never to have seen (yet?) Here's some video's:

PEARL JAM - BLACK (not an official video)

Ten is the debut studio album by the American rock band Pearl Jam, released on August 27, 1991 through Epic Records. Following the disbanding of bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard's previous group Mother Love Bone, the two recruited vocalist Eddie Vedder, guitarist Mike McCready, and drummer Dave Krusen to form Pearl Jam in 1990. Most of the songs began as instrumental jams, to which Vedder added lyrics about topics such as depression, homelessness, and abuse.Ten was not an immediate success, but by late 1992 it had reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album produced three hit singles: "Alive", "Even Flow", and "Jeremy". While Pearl Jam was accused of jumping on the grunge bandwagon at the time, Ten was instrumental in popularizing alternative rock in the mainstream. In February 2013, the album crossed the 10 million mark in sales and has been certified 13x platinum by the RIAA. It remains Pearl Jam's most commercially successful album.

TEMPLE OF DOG - HUNGER STRIKE

"Hunger Strike" is a song by the American rock band Temple of the Dog. Written by vocalist Chris Cornell, "Hunger Strike" was released in 1991 as the first single from the band's sole studio album, Temple of the Dog (1991). It was Temple of the Dog's most popular song. The song peaked at number four on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

PEARL JAM - GIVEN TO FLY

"Given to Fly" is a song by the American rock band Pearl Jam. Featuring lyrics written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and music written by guitarist Mike McCready, "Given to Fly" was released in December 1997 as the first single from the band's fifth studio album, Yield (1998). "Given to Fly" proved to be the album's most popular single. The song topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and eventually peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song spent a total of six weeks at number one on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song was included on Pearl Jam's 2004 greatest hits album, rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991–2003).

GUANRANTEED

"Guaranteed" is a song written and performed by Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder from the Into the Wild soundtrack (2007). It is the final track on the album, and also features a hidden track of "Guaranteed" (Humming Vocal) after about two minutes of silence following the regular version of "Guaranteed".

LONGING TO BELONG

Ukulele Songs is the second solo studio album by American singer and Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. It was released on May 31, 2011. The album is composed of original songs and new arrangements of several standards.

PEARL JAM - MIND YOUR MANNERS

"Mind Your Manners" is a song by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam. It was released on July 11, 2013 as a digital download as the lead single from their tenth studio album Lightning Bolt. Writing for the The Globe and Mail, Brad Wheeler said the song was "lean, swift and punishing". Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready said "It's my attempt to try to make a really hard edge-type Dead Kennedys-sounding song". Singer Eddie Vedder's lyrics criticize organized religion, which Vedder considers hypocritical for their intolerance and "so many of the things which have come out of those organizations– like the abuse of children and then its cover-up."The song was played live for the first time at their show in London, Ontario on July 16, 2013. The video for the song directed by Danny Clinch was released on August 23, 2013. Bassist Jeff Ament brought fellow Missoula, Montana resident Andy Smetanka to do the animation for the video

PJ - BLACK ...  I like Ten, really like it actually, enough to have been burned trying to hear more of this roots of pearl jam music in their later releases, but alas, I jumped off the bandwagon years ago, I'm OK with mostly everything up to Yield and then I got nothing for Pearl Jam.  U still cant figure out what he is singing half the time, but I like this album, did mention that?

TEMPLE OF THE DOG ... This album has been featured on here before, I think.  At the time of its release it went 100% unnoticed by me.  Completely unnoticed until you guy came along.  I like this song though mostly because of Cornell though.

GIVEN TO FLY ...  Probably the last great Pearl Jam song IMO.  Just a mesmerizing gem of a song from an uneven album.

MIND YOUR MANNERS ... I bought the digital download edition of this, thinking I would dig it, and to some degree I do, but it sits unplayed for the past couple of years.  Maybe I'll give it another shot, kinda liked this one though I still have no idea what he's singing

PS: Only the last video of the final 3 plays here in USA, good work Niels!

I kinda getting tired of the video's not playing "over there".

Is there a way to know?

Not that I know of, but you COULD seek the videos on Youtube yourself, if it's just one or two, just sayin'.

There will probably be some artists in the near future, where that problem will appear a few times. I don't really get it, though? Vedder is american? But the video can of course be put on Youtube by an european, but I have no way, to know that?!

I know I can seek them out...  and most of the time I will, just haven't been lucky in the "free time" department lately...

I like Vedder.  He's different.  Very difficult to understand on many songs, but he has a good voice.

Black - Great song from a great album.  You can actually understand him here, which is cool.  "twisted thoughts that spin, 'round my head".  I like that line.  That being said, Jeremy is the coolest PJ song ever...McCready is a terrific guitarist.  He doesn't try to be pretty, he just plays killer solos.

Hunger Strike - Speaking of great lyrics, how 'bout the opening line of this song?  "I don't mind stealing bread, from the mouths of decadence".  So cool.  The whole song is.  I think Cornell is the better vocalist, but you know that.  Killer song from a killer album.

Given To Fly - Meh, this one's just okay for me.  Singing in a higher register is not Vedder's strength.

Guaranteed - Won't play.  Doesn't matter, I have this soundtrack.  It's quite good.  This, Niels, is Americana.  Sparse instrumentation and killer lyrics from singer songwriters.  It doesn't have to be lumped in with country music at all. This sounds nothing like country (which is why you still need to check out the album Southeastern by Jason Isbell).  I know you have Spotify, so there's really no excuse.  By the way, the song Long Nights from this soundtrack is the bomb.

Longing To Belong - Doesn't play.

Mind Your Manners - Sounds punk, which I don't care for.  I'll pass on this one.

Good post.  I like Eddie.

Tell you what: I WILL check out "Southeastern", but my expectations a pretty low, I'm afraid.

Give it a fair shot...then listen to it one more time.
