ROCKOLLECTIONS: LOVE AND MARRIAGE PT.3

I started last week with Love and Marriage- Love I know about, I just never got into the Marriage part.

But as I look out the window, today seems like a nice day for a Wedding.

In this Chapter, I'll tell you about some of my Roots (we all have them)- childhood reminiscences from my life, and the Soundtrack to it regarding Weddings.

A trip back to a simpler time, when Love and Marriage did go together like a Horse and…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: LOVE AND MARRIAGE PT.2

And this Lifelong Bachelor continues with Love and Marriage....some nerve, lol!

To open this Episode I'll have some Trivia about June Weddings, and a Mixed Bag Set of Music.

Then, throughout the History of Rock & Roll there have been songs about being Too Young To Get Married.

A nice fuzzy little subject for Song, but in real life something that comes with…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: LOVE AND MARRIAGE PT.1

This is the beginning of Love and Marriage, a Theme I may have no right doing, having never exchanged those Official Vows.

Then again, it may afford me a perspective that comes at it from a different angle from those who have previously been or currently are Married.

I picked June to do this because there are more Weddings this month than any other.

We have all…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.4 END

I will start off this final episode with a few more Real River songs- for Rivers that geographically and specifically do exist.

Then a couple regarding one of America's most famous Rivers, at least in song, that we have been misspelling for well over a century!

I have a behind-the-scenes story about doing a show one time, and Engineer Ken Stanley refusing to play a song that I wanted to come on next.

So while one song was…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.3

Continuing on...National Rivers Month is a time to enjoy all of the things that Rivers bring to our communities.

Rivers provide drinking water, recreational opportunities, environmental ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

Rivers have also been used as a source of food, for transport, as a defensive barrier, and as a source of hydropower to drive machinery.

So don't pee…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.2

Opening up this chapter on Rivers, I have a test for you.
Sometimes I like to see just how smart the listeners are, lol!
So you have the length…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: NATIONAL RIVERS MONTH PT.1

National Rivers Month is celebrated annually during the month of June to promote awareness and preservation of the country's Rivers.

For this event, I have gathered a bunch of my favorite River songs.

And as usual, there are far too many for me to have time enough to play.

So I'll just let the tide take me in that Free-Form and Free-Association way of choosing the songs, flowing along like a…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: VOL1: FAVORITES AND GUILTY PLEASURES PT.2

The Muse steered me a little Folkie at the beginning, and I wanted to play the two Best Songs I have ever heard about Old People.
And then I went on about the joys and adventures we used to have playing the Flip Side of Singles.
This was a nice diversion show…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: VOL1: FAVORITES AND GUILTY PLEASURES PT.1

It has occurred to me that this Rockollections show will not go on forever.

Some day, for some reason, it will end, as everything does including us.

So rather than wait to play particular songs in a Theme, or finding a reason to play them, I have decided to go for myself and just play them because I want to!

These are Favorites of mine encountered over the many years I've been listening to Music, and some may be just…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MEMORIAL DAY 2014 PT.2 END

The Official Memorial Day Remembrance concludes for this year, but in my heart continues the other 364 days.

This time, I'll open with song about a guy who, I hate to say it, would have made it easier on his family and himself if he had not come home from war overseas.

The song contains probably the most powerful metaphor I have ever heard!

Included in this closing Chapter, the story of a tune I heard in church…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: MEMORIAL DAY 2014 PT.1

Memorial Day is May 26th, it used to always be on May 30th before our fixation with Monday Holidays.

It is a day of Remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service- the ultimate sacrifice.

I'll open with song that is also a Poem, taken word for word from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

And later in, a song adapted from a Poem- this one written in 1942…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE COLOR RED PT.2 END

Some more Red Music, and by no means am I trying to play The Greatest Red Songs Of All Time.

As a matter of fact, I refused to leave my chair, playing only Red songs I could see and reach without getting up, lol!

A Lazy Spring Day!

The only requirement was that I LIKE the song, but I like most things I hear.

This is a show maybe even more Free-Form than usual- an unprepared, make something out of nothing…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE COLOR RED PT.1

This was one of the very few times I sat down to do a show and had nothing in mind.

I was thinking about next week's broadcast and it kind of sneaked up on me that I had to do one for this week.

What was I to do?

Well I had earlier in the week found an unmarked cassette that I threw in the player, and it was Steve Goodman visiting Vin Scelsa on an Easter Sunday on WNEW-FM.

That  became an annual Easter…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JUKEBOX MUSIC PT.3 END

This is the capper for the Jukebox exploration.

Despite some old statistics, I've always felt Jukeboxes made most of their money in bars.

Now imagine sitting in a bar, and a guy sitting with you is the guy singing on the Jukebox!

That's how I'll begin, and I'll go from there.

Included in this Episode is perhaps the Best Song of the short series, by Ellis Paul!

Plus a song people undoubtedly were wondering…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JUKEBOX MUSIC PT.2

I began last week with Music dedicated to the glorious Jukebox.

They started as wooden boxes and graduated to those beautiful old Wurlitzers, Seeburgs and Rockolas.

Michael Martin Murphey calls them, "slot machines pounding out the beat"!

Last week the Jukebox was a nickel, this week the price goes up.

And can there be anything Spiritual about the Jukebox?

Sure there can...I'll explore that too.

Join…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: JUKEBOX MUSIC PT.1

It's the Jukebox or the Juke Box this time out (either spelling is acceptable), that coin-operated Phonograph.

I'll have some History here- both about that machine and with the Music I'll play.

And see if you can pick up on the thread that holds together the longest set in here.

I forgot to mention that it was 78's that replaced cylinders on the original Jukebox.

Then in the 50's, the 45 RPM singles took over.

To be…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: ONE MORE FOR THE RECORD

There were too many good Songs About Records left over to leave them out.

So I thought I'd come back and finish it up.

There was one vinyl single I placed close to me a long time ago, just in case I ever did a show about Records.

Bad move, lol!

Included are some songs about doing everything possible for a Hit Record.

And then, having established a new lifestyle, trying to get Another Hit.

Hope you…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING PETE FORNATALE AND FM RADIO PT.2

Continuing with Pete Fornatale and those early days of FM Rock Radio, he was very passionate about the Music- and among his favorites were Poco, the Beach Boys and songs about Radio.

DJ's come from around the country to work in New York City.

Again Pete was different- he was homegrown, he was one of us, with all the memories and experiences that come with that unique upbringing here.

He wrote books too, and I…

ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBERING DICK CLARK AND PETE FORNATALE PT.1

This show title and photo is slightly deceptive.

I will spend a little time with Dick Clark.

And did you know there was a song written by an ex-Byrd ABOUT Dick Clark?

The rest of this half hour, and all of the next, will be dedicated in fond memory to a guy who inspired and encouraged me to tackle those large and long Themes I sometimes do.

And the short ones too.

It now appears the first to bring a calm…
