Classic Rock Bottom

I am always honest with you.
So I must tell you that sometimes putting a Podcast up can be a royal pain in the ass!
That is the case with this one.
Not the content, but from a technical standpoint. It was a struggle.
If you only know Manfred Mann from the 60’s pop singles group, you will be very surprised by what he moved into as Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.
He headed in a much more “progressive” direction.
I’ll begin this with a Springsteen song and a classical piece of music they put lyrics to.
The results were big hits, one here and one in the UK.
Another song, Demolition Man, was a hit over there, and frankly I didn’t care for it.
But after repeated listenings for this show, it has grown on me- kinda like me on people...like a fungus, lol.
Got another Springsteen song after that, as Mann from his earliest days always had a keen ear for talented songwriters, and would adapt their songs to his style.
And it’s funny, sometimes hearing another artist do these songs you realize how GREAT Bruce was with those early lyrics. He came right out of the box running.
However, this is Manfred Mann’s Earth Band we are doing, and the spotlight is on them.
There will be a Part Two.

Here's the Earthy link, Mann, to WLSO.FM:

Dear Honest RJ, lol,
Glad you liked all those songs, and there is more to come.
Blinded By The Light IS a classic.
As I said, Demolition Man didn't grab me right away then suddenly did.
And Davey's On The Road Again is just good music!
Let me introduce you again.
Spirits In The Night, meet RJ.
RJ meet Spirits In The Night, lol!
Happy to do so, and you are very welcome.
Me being honest, I slightly prefer the old Manfred Mann.
Just for My Name Is Jack they take the edge!
Thanks as always,
Mike

Dear Scott,
Thanks for the thumbs up!
Good point about a progressive band not writing their own material.

"Thank God he's not playing Shaun Cassidy's remake"...

Not to fear, it is doubtful I will ever play anything by Shaun Cassidy, lol!
And to tell you the truth, when I heard myself say that, I wondered what the hell I meant.
I can't remember now what brilliant thought I had, lol!
Somebody help me!

Mike, To be honest (and I know you want me to be honest), I like Manfred Mann's Earth Band better than Manfred Mann.

I very much enjoyed this show. Let's face it, Blinded By The Light is a pure classic. I also liked Demolition Man and Davey's On The Road Again.

But my favorite was Spirits In The Night. That's a fantastic song. I've never heard it so once again, I owe you a big thank you.

Good post Mike!

I only know of Mann's radio hits, Blinded By The Light and DoWaDitty, I think they actually hit the charts again in the oate 70's but I dont recal the tune, maybe you will get to that one...

I had heard they were a progressive band, and I liked hearing the later stuff. Like the Davy's On The Road agaoin tune, pretty catchy. Strong vocalist. Little surprised to hear they don't write many of their own tunes. Not sure I understand how a "progressive" band can do that.

I must admit, I'm a little nervous about your closing comment about Do Wa Ditty ... I was thinking to myself through this show, "Thank God he's not playing Shaun Cassidy's remake"... Now I'm wondering if your gonna have little fun with that in the next one... LOL!
