Classic Rock Bottom

Since Valentine's Day is less than a week away, I thought a Look At Love might be in order.
Now the ground rules I set for myself were that ALL songs would have the word "Love" in the title.
But with the exception of the first song I played, I noticed an interesting pattern developing...every song I chose had "Love" as the FIRST word in the title!
Fascinating!
I wondered how far I could ride that.
In our usual semi-scholarly fashion, for openers I will try to find out just what Love is by going to two books found in most households- certainly in every library or bookstore.
But rather than read to you, these defining words will be sung!
So to begin, a look at what Love is, followed by a look at what else it is.
Can't you just feel the Love already, lol?
Enjoy!

Here's the link to what is better than chocolate...well, maybe not, but it's fun, at WLSO.FM:

RJ,
Oh damn, I honestly didn't think of Love Is Like Oxygen- excellent choice, I'll see if I can find it and add it to the stack of songs I have now.
You guys make me work...just when I thought I had enough for maybe 3 shows dammit, lol!
So you liked the Joni Mitchell one better- for me it's a tough choice because I go back farther with the Spanky & Our Gang one, and it was the first song I thought of for the show and series.
I am proud of that opening and what I tried to do, it had a bit of smarts to it not found much on the radio anymore.
As for the Loggins and Messina song, maybe you heard Scott's Loggins cover version?
Glad you liked the choices, I wanted some out of the ordinary ones.
You know, you're right about Roxy Music, lol!
Diana Ross, did she drop off the earth?
She did some great stuff, and I always liked the Supremes, but she semed to be too full of herself.
What got me most was hearing that wonderful old Motown sound in the song, made me glad I picked it out.
And I thought people would have a blast of memory with Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart because it is so overlooked these days.
Love Is A Rose by Neil Young was an iffy pick I thought- wasn't sure if people would like it or be disappointed I didn't play the Linda Ronstadt one.
So as I usually do, I went iffy!
Speaking of choices, nice pick with that wife of yours, lol!
You are indeed lucky!
Thanks for doing the writing and listening thing you do so well,
Mike

Welcome back Scott.
Hey man, good thing I did the Valentine's Day theme or you would have been in DEEP trouble, lol!
Took me a while to find that Kenny Loggins remake of Love Song, and I like the simple it down presentation he does- nice pick.
At first I thought it would be all acoustic, but others kick in there, and he kinda countrifies it.
Also the Judas Priest Green Manalishi was great to hear, always liked that one by Fleetwood Mac...it was by them, right, lol?
Glad you even knew that Loggins & Messina song!
Sure, Spanky & Our Gang had some huge hits in the 60's- Like To Get To Know You, Sunday Will Never Be The Same, Lazy Day, Sunday Morning, Give A Damn, etc.
Seems like you dug the Neil Young version.
It's odd, but in this series, I have no idea yet what I will end with.
The beginning came right to me, I KNEW it would be that dictionary definition, then I thought of Joni.
But the end...not yet, although yours is a good choice.
I have a stack of songs next to me, and I'll just trust the end will make itself apparent in its free-form way.
But damn, you guys do freak me when you start mentioning songs, lol!
An end could be a beginning!
Thanks for writing, hope you enjoy tomorrow night's episode, and the ones after that (not sure how long I am going either, lol!),
Mike

I wonder if we'll get the theme to Love, American Style???

I hadn't planned on it RJ, but it's a thought, lol!

And a good one.

Mike, we all know what love is like...

Love is like oxygen, you get too much, you get to high, not enough and you're gonna die (or something like that).  I wonder if we'll hear that soon?

I like the idea of the 2 opening songs, but the Joni Mitchell tune was much better.

I really dig the Loggins and Messina song.  For some reason it seems like I've heard somebody else cover that, but I can't remember for sure.

For everything else, I liked the Roxy Music tune, I've never heard anything else by them that I'm aware of.  I also liked hearing Diana Ross, although I'm no fan of hers, she had/has a great voice.  And Love Is A Rose by Neil Young was an excellent listen.

Good choices Mike.

By the way, I guess I'm lucky.  My wife thinks Valentine's Day is strictly a commercial holiday, so the only thing we do to celebrate it is maybe go out and eat.  That's it.

Hey Mike!

Its good to get back to your shows again!  Sorry Ive missed so many, been a busy few weeks for me...  And by the way!  Thanks for the valentines reminder... hahahahaha

Love the Loggins and Messina track.  Loggins re-recorded this track for his Here and Now release in 2008.  I just posted that version on my "Covers" SHT list.  Its fantastic!  Go over and listen to it if you can.  Hard to improve on this one though he came pretty close!

Had no idea there was a Spanky and the Gang band !  haha.

Leave to Neil Young to get it most correct!

Wouldn't it be fitting to end this series with Foreigner's "I Wanna Know What Love Is?"  After all, once you think got it forgured out, you learn you dont!  Or maybe end with J. Geils "Love Stinks", for some it may be fitting to end that way too!  hahahaha

Have a great week!  Looking forward to part II
