Classic Rock Bottom

Some fun strangeness to open this Halloween show, and an audition for my acting career, lol!
Strange Things Are Happening indeed!
And I'd like you to try to guess what world-famous group, one of the greatest Rock bands ever, does that instrumental I will play.
Incidentally, it is from the vinyl album- sound any different?
Then it is on to the main question of this particular show.
Is it the time for Zombies?
Or as another person declares, is it the time for Witches?
The answer lies in that old wood carved box with the odd engravings on it, which I will have to open.
Don't crowd me, I need room to run, lol!
And a tip of the hat to my old pal, Engineer Ken is included- we always had some great fun with these Halloween shows- on and off the air.
Enjoy the proceedings.
There will a Part Two, unless I am turned into an ugly toad, as opposed to the...ahem...handsome Prince that...ahem...I am now!
Think there's a frog in my throat, lol!

Dear RJ,
I doubt very much he's building that sexy bomb in Weird Science, lol!
Like I told Scott, I have NO idea what that crazy SOB is building in there.
On that instrumental, you first thought Beatles eh, interesting.
But I believe you, since you are such a great knowledgeable listener those Keith Moon drums would seal it for you.
Smarter than the average bear, lol!
That Zombies tune is a great one, but it was a setup for Donovan and where I knew I would go.
And the Zombies album Odessey & Oracle is one of the most brilliant albums ever made- jump on that one if you can.
I have the feeling you had never heard Season Of The Witch, is that so?
That song was also done in the 60's on the legendary Super Session LP, Al Kooper teaming with Stephen Stills as I recall.
There is also a lesser known but terrific version by a guy named Terry Reid that nobody remembers.
Evil Woman is a great song, and that thing about fools and money I am constantly proving, lol!
I took a chance with Marty Robbins, but I like the song and thought I could get away with it.
El Paso is a gem, and I have always wanted to do a Western series that would be on.
But as I have said before, I have more ideas than time to do them.
And see what I mean about you guys being so musically literate- I said "a real witch" and you immediately thought of Rhiannon.
Nice brain you have there, and I keep saying we are getting in synch, lol
But I'll still surprise you!
I cannot remember anyone saying my show was superb...SUPERB!
That makes you the Listener Of The Year, lol!
Again, as I have in my Scott response, I have to say you two guys are so musically literate it is a joy having you listen to me.
Thanks,
Mike

Dear Scott,
Scott & RJ's Excellent Adventure, lol!
You guys think alike, and getting more like me!
I believe you- I can see where Keith's smashing drums would give it away, maybe not to the casual listener though.
You should go with your gut more often.
I always try to remember that when watching Jeopardy- I ALMOST got on the show!
Oh that 60's stuff is the BEST music ever made, and you didn't even mention some of really great groups and artists!
It was a time of expIoration, experimentation, no rules, and I could play things that would blow your mind.
And the Zombies Odessey & Oracle is one of the most brilliant albums ever made.
You gotta listen to it, the album ends with the track I played.
Glad you thought ELO fit perfectly, I was hoping...
Not bad thinking on your part for those other tracks...I'm not saying anything though...playing with a poker face, lol!
I was worried about Rhiannon, I don't like to play songs that are overplayed- in fact, for me, I actually sorta played a lot of hit songs in this one.
But I thought if I popped it in real quick, people would take it in its context and grab onto it.
And maybe some people don't even know it is about a Witch.
Another case of a series of songs in a particular order, giving them all a greater meaning.
To me, it was more of a fastball than a curve, lol!
Finally, don't ask me, I have NO idea what that crazy SOB is building in there!
I tell you, you two guys are so musically literate it is a joy having you listen to me.
Thanks,
Mike

Spoiler Alert!!!! Don't read until you listen to the show.

First of all, Scott and I must have been listening at about the same time, b/c his comment was not here when I started, and to answer his question, I'm not exactly sure what he's building, but I sure hope it's the same thing the boys built in Wierd Science...

On to the show:

Scott's comment on guessing The Who mirrors mine. My very first thought was The Beatles, until I heard the drums. At that point I said, definitely not The Beatles. I was hoping Mike would save the answer until part two so we could venture our guess. Now he'll never know whether or not to believe we both would have been correct.

The Zombies tune is outstanding. That has to be one of the most fun songs to sing along to. Great harmonies and vocal shadowing (probably not a correct music term, but I know what I mean).

Hey, I really dig that Donovan song, Season Of The Witch. That was cool.

Evil Woman is one of my favorite ELO songs. Don't you just love the piano that paces the song at the beginning. It sounds so simple but works so well. And I love the lyric "a fool and his money soon go separate ways". How true is this?

And the Marty Robbins tune was excellent. He has a great voice (or should I say had) and I really should own some of his work. El Paso is one of the great songs of all time.

It's funny, when you were talking right before Rhiannon, I was thinking Witchy Woman, but as soon as you said "a real witch", I got goosebumps and I knew Rhiannon was coming up.

Mike, this show was superb. The 28 minutes flew by while I was listening.

"Strange things are afoot at the Circle K Ted" - Bill (Bill and Teds Excellent adventure).

hahahaha...

That's actually what came to mind when I read your show notes. I also thought about Frankenstein from Edgar Winter when you mentioned the instrumental, but then it came on, and as I was listening to it, I promise I'm not lying, I was thinking to myself, the only band that drums and strums that way is The Who, but I had convinced myself that I was wrong, so when you announced them, I was like, YES!!! I should go with my gut more often! Boy, if I had a dollar for every time I said that.

Love the Zombies track. Ive never heard their stuff beyond whats on radio. I may go back and check them out a little closer. Ive been picking at some of the 60's stuff I like. Its mostly Beatles, Who, Guess Who, Tommy James and the Shondells, and Beach Boys stuff...

The ELO track didn't come to mind when you talked about women, but when you started playing it it really fit perfectly. My mind started to think about other tracks.. I came up with

Witchy Woman - The Eagles (Ive been on an Eagles kick ever since your last shows)
Witch Hunt - Rush. The lyrics on this may fit really well in a Halloween show

Rhiannon was the perfect fit for the ending, its haunting low key rhythm about a witchy woman was a great curve ball!

And I have the same question for RJHog... Whats he building in there?

Looking forward to part II
