Classic Rock Bottom

For those sharp-eared listeners, I confess, this two-parter is a repeat from last year.
I didn't have the time or energy to do another one for this year- and that blizzard we had didn't help.
But maybe you didn't hear last year's, or maybe it will be fun to listen again.
Give it a shot!

In my never-ending attempt to bring you music that is different from commercial radio, I thought for New Year’s 2011 I would play you some “NEW” music.
Not really new music, but songs that have “NEW” in their name.
That’s right, all the songs played in both parts of this show have “NEW” in the title!
Brilliant little idea right, lol?
Simple as that!
And it made for some very odd bedfellows in this opening chapter, lol!
A toast to old and “NEW”, and here’s hoping you enjoy this!
It’s a fun one.

Here's the link to Part One for some holiday fun, at WLSO.FM:

RJ,
Thanks about forgiving my posting an old show, it's like the Governor pardoned me, lol!
You're just like me- no matter what it is, if I haven't heard it before, it's new to me.
Great guitar work by the Edge, and we BOTH thought of that as a FIRST song- very cool!
Do you feel like Scott and I, maybe their best is behind them?
And you too are not a snob when it comes to other types of music, and that opens up worlds of music for you.
By the way, I think Classic Rocker Rich gets a challenge to his manhhod tonight, in profane and no uncertain terms, lol!
I thought Brand New Key would trigger some memories.
I can't water ski, but I roller skated first playing hockey, then moved onto ice hockey and couldn't go back to roller, it was too slow.
Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, but is it a Gucci bag (like I know fashion, lol!)?
You and James same hometown?

I can't believe you played Tom Jones' What's New Pussycat:-).  That has to be one of the worst songs ever.  How could any adult sing that with a straight face?

Alright, I admit it...I DIDN'T have a straight face- it was an attempt to keep folks off balance, LOL!
Hey, you are making me realize I remember more about Alice than I thought.
Mel's Diner is familiar, and so is that "kiss my grits" insult- although I wouldn't have known it was a Flo saying it.
I think you will like Part 2 better.
Thanks for the listen and the words.
Mike

Scott,
No, that storm is still a pain.
My Totes boots snapped in my hand putting them on, so I am wearing sneakers, lol!
Everytime I go out I come back all wet in the pants and sneakers- I swear, the snow is piled higher than ME!
Walking outside is like going through trenches in one of the World Wars!
This made me laugh, " I put my last SHT list together"- I've been on people's SHT list before, and they on mine- or is that missing a letter, lol?
Excellent selections on your part!
As for me, for some reason I wanted to go off the beaten path, and haul out some odd ones...and I did, lol!
U2 was the first song I thought of though, and I agree with you about their music, seems like it is going downhill.
See now that's cool, even though Nancy Wilson isn't your cup of tea, you don't badmouth it for those who do like her, and you are open to a moodsetter.
If only everyone were like that!
The commercial with Melanie's song in it I've never seen.
A commercial comes on and I am off surfing, lol!
And just what kind of bag did Poppa get? I hope not a purse!
I have almost the same feeling about Tom Jones, he makes me smile.
Seems like a nice guy, never hear anything bad about him.
And if I play him, it's for SHOCK value, lol!
I wasn't sure the Alice theme would work, but I needed a short song to complete the half.
Plus, there WAS an element of the unexpected in there!
I am always going for that, even though you guys are starting to regularly anticipate some of my thoughts before I play them, lol!
Part 1 was just fun, I think Part 2 is better. it has more substance to it.
Thanks for the listen and the thumbs up,
Mike

Mike, it's okay, I'll forgive you for posting an old show, 'cause it's still new to me...

What a great start.  The first song I thought of was New Year's Day by U2, and low and behold, that's the first one you played.  How great is that guitar work by Edge???

I liked the Nancy Wilson tune, great voice for someone I've heard of but not familiar with.

And man, I haven't heard Brand New Key in forever, probably since I was a kid.  I always thought it was a cool song, although I never liked roller skating.  For me it's like water skiing, for some reason, as coordinated as I usually am, I can't do either of those things worth a dang.

Papa's Got A Brand New Bag by James Brown was a great addition to this show.  So funky that dude was, and yes, he called Augusta home.

I can't believe you played Tom Jones' What's New Pussycat:-).  That has to be one of the worst songs ever.  How could any adult sing that with a straight face?

The Stylistics song was good, I haven't heard that in a while either, and the theme from Alice surprised me.  I did watch that show some, not religiously, as it was the showcase for Mel's Diner, if I remember correctly.  I also remember Flo's never ending "kiss my grits" insult.  Not a bad show at all.

Good New Year's show on your part Mike, and I'm looking forward to the heavier part 2...

Happy New Year Mike!  Hope youve weathered that nasty storm well and without any complications...

I actually thought about this when I put my last SHT list together, songs with the word NEW in them.  Heres a few of the tracks that looked good to me...

New Sensation - INXS

New Girl Now - Honeymoon Suite

New Song - The Who

New Kid In Town - The Eagles

Love Was New - Chicago

Great start with the U2 track.  I prefer them so much more pre-Unforgettable Fire than their later stuff.

Ive heard of Nancy Wilson a lot lately, but that's my first listen.  Not bad, not my style, but liked the mood it sets and liked the option of using that as a mood setter sometime.

OK, the brand new rollerskates song totally makes my mind wander to that darn commercial on TV, you know the one where the toddler is flying through traffic in his walker?  hahahaha.  I digress...

Papa got the shaft!  Just a bag?  hahahaha

Tom Jones...  whoa whoa whoa whooooooooaaaoooooaaa..  HAHAHA.  I know he's had a very successful career, but for me he is so hard to take serious.  His vocals and stage act are so over the top to me.  I must admit that I do watch, but for me it is for comedic value.  Sorry Tom!

The Alice theme was a surprise, interesting, but surprising.  Just didn't expect it, but with your shows I need to expect the unexpected.  haha. Use to watch that with the folks once upon a time.

Great Show as usual Mike, looking forward to part II
