ROCKOLLECTIONS: 1967 AND THE SUMMER OF LOVE PT.7

I will continue our celebration of a year, 1967, as we go back in time with the help of Mr. Fantasy.
Two title tracks from 1967 albums to begin.
Then I'll talk about something you know or didn't know.
Back in the 60's, albums in England were ordinarily released with 14 tracks on them.
Here in the U.S. it was the custom to have only 12 songs!
So what would happen- for example to Beatle albums- is that the American record labels would leave two songs off.
They would later release those previously unavailable tracks on a mismash album with no continuity and no sense of artistic time.
The Beatles tried to make a bitter joke of it with their famous Butcher Cover on the Yesterday And Today LP, which only resulted in them having to change the cover!
In the case of Are You Experienced, the 1967 debut album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, there were in fact only 11 songs on the U.S. release, but still 14 in England.
One of them, Red House, got a lot of play on the then Free-Form WABC-FM here in New York.
It was Jimi doing Blues, and I discovered I LIKED Blues..so much so I had the get the British import of that original album!
So that's what I have for you this chapter: Blues and Blues Rock.
All from that wonderful year when I was exposed to so much new music on a daily basis.
FM Radio showed me there was an awful lot I wasn't hearing, and opened the door to a whole New World that had me hooked then, and still does now.
Enjoy!

RJ,
No sweat about being late- you had good reason.
Wow, Dear Mr. Fantasy, the very first song gets the Golden Pell!
You could have stopped listening then, lol!
Uh oh...you don't have ANY Traffic...overlooking one of the all-time bands?
For shame, lol!
Yeah, I went Blues in this one, since my first exposure to Blues was on FM radio in the 60's.
And yes, You Better Run by The Young Rascals is the original.
I know that one so well by them, I had forgotten Pat Benatar's version.
Gee I wonder how many people think the song is her's?
See, if radio would do its damn job...!
I understand you preferring Benatar, I think we all always like the one we hear first!
Just part of growing up, lol!
Thanks for the listen and writing, and welcome back my friend,
Mike

I'm a bit late getting to these shows, but here goes.

Right off the bat, I'm giving the Golden Pell to Dear Mr. Fantasy by Traffic.  I don't have any of their work whatsoever, but I'd like to eventually pick some up.  This is a good tune.

This show is definitely blues rock themed.  Good picks overall, they all fit the theme well.

The surprising tune for me in this show is You Better Run by The Young Rascals.  I've heard Pat Benatar's version many times, but never this version.  Is this the original?  I had no idea it was a cover.  Good pick, although I'm still giving the edge to Benatar, since it's from my era.

I like Baseball, I like Football, but I LOVE Hockey!

I was always outstanding at Baseball and Hockey, and as the weather changed and each season blended into the other I was in my glory...playing both games every day.

Hell, I would have played for 24 hours if I didn't have to eat and sleep, lol!

Football I played, and can still throw a spiral, but it was never as big in my neighborhood, neither was basketball...although I played that too in school.

Those Nuns, and later in high school the Christian Brothers, MADE you play all sports...and made you tough too!

NFL pre-season is underway, that for me means the end of baseball season.

I used to be a big fan, but all those players juicing up has turned me off quite a bit.

I find myself watching a player and wondering if he took steroids.

They screwed up the game BIG TIME!

Forget the Hall of Fame, who's gonna vote for Barry Bonds or any number of others?

I am a HUGE Mets fan, that's why I can mock them!

Scott,
Welcome back aboard.
Why does everybody hate to agree with poor Jon, lol?
Funny thing is, I was just intending to play the Blues, but I guess Blues and Guitar go together!
I love those 2 Hendrix songs.
No Traffic in your collection?
So many suggestions I can make for that band- Pearly Queen, Paper Sun, Vagabond Virgin, You Can All Join In, the whole John Barleycorn Must Die album...etc.
Too many to mention. so just start at their beginning and go from there, lol!
Thanks for listening , writing, saying nice work, and good to hear from you buddy,
Mike

Not if you're the Mets.
