ROCKOLLECTIONS: 1967 AND THE SUMMER OF LOVE PT.9

Continuing our celebration of the 45th Anniversary of 1967 & The Summer Of Love, a return to its birthplace, San Francisco.
I'll begin with the FIRST actual hit song to come out of the San Francisco Rock scene.
Bet you haven't heard this one in a long time!
Then some familiar-name bands from the Bay Area, including the one, in my opinion, that best bridged the Progressive Rock gap with mainstream Music.
And I'll end this episode with some groups you may have heard OF, but never heard PLAY.
Including the Beau Brummels, Moby Grape and the Chocolate Watchband.
Some excellent music in this one, so give a listen.
Oh...and this Series would not be complete without at least one mention of a Love-In, lol!
Enjoy!

You have my email, so I'm waiting for that picture of Grace Slick. I will wait only for so long...

I saw Starship back in the 80's, and the opening "band" was The Outfield. I swear that half the crowd left when The Outfield was done and I was stunned since, even though it was Starship, Grace friggin' Slick was there. Idiots. Hope they went home and choked on their Outfield cassettes.

As for your list, I have everything you mentioned except for Blonde on Blonde (not a Dylan fan) and, of course, Surrealistic Pillow. So ha! Yes, I do have Tapestry believe it or not.

RJ & Jon,

Thomas? Damn! How old are you?

Unless you meant George.

I was a fan when they were just Jefferson.

You guys, as we say in Brookly, are pissers, LOL!!!

Jon,

You tell 'em about that whole Starship, Jefferson Starship, Jefferson Airplane thing!
Hey, how about a chart, lol!

Scott,
Oh man, I didn't even notice that, but I gotta figure he knows it was the Jefferson Airplane.
I can't say I've been to Haight-Ashbury...too far to walk, lol!
Funny line about Grace Slick being slick, lol!
Grace was HOT!
I have a picture of her topless at an outdoor concert in Gaelic Park in the Bronx, apparently she was truly HOT...and she looks delicious- plus she is sucking on a lollipop!
I can't even say it...lol!
Check out Superbird and Who Am I by Country Joe & Fish.
Thanks for the listen and writing, and for the "Nice job",
Mike

RJ,
That's right, no record collection, lol!
You have to HAVE certain albums- Surrealistic Pillow, Sgt. Pepper, Dark Side Of The Moon, Tapestry, Exile On Main Street, Blonde On Blonde, Hotel California, etc.
Well I said why I played Hello Hello, and could there be a better-titled song to begin a show with, lol?
I saw that, The Cable Guy, Carey is creepy...and that song is in it?
Hell I must have been drunk!
A lady wrote to me that Coming Back To Me was her favorite Airplane song.
There is another song by Balin on that album called Today that I might like even better.
Nice that was the Golden Pell winner though!
I was wondering how people would take Eastern Jam by Country Joe and the Fish, since it is so psychedelic...and an instrumental to boot.
But as an authentic piece of 1967 I felt I should play it, and you liked it!
That's what I admire about your listening, you are open and give all music a chance.
The song after that was Magic Hollow by the Beau Brummels.
Look them up, they had some great catchy hits in the mid-60's, then they went Progressive.
Thanks for the listen and writing, I always enjoy it,
Mike

And Starship is completely different from Jefferson Starship which is different from Jefferson Airplane so looks like everyone needs some schooling. Except me, of course.

Just read RJ's reference to Jefferson Starship tunes and then Somebody to  Love, hoping he knows that tune is from the Airplane and not the Starship (completely different bands as well as altitudes).

Love the pic of Haight-Ashbury - been there!

Totally with you on the Grace Slick crush thing, back in the day she was, well..  pretty slick!  You should see the pics of her on Jefferson Starships Spitfire album!  Nice!

I totally never heard anything other than that "WhooPee were all gonna die" song from Country Joe!  Not bad!

Still love the Airplane tracks though!  Nice job!

Dang it!  I don't have a record collection.  All because I don't own Surrealistic Pillow.  I may have to correct that oversight.

The first song you played, Hello Hello, was okay, but the Jefferson Starship stuff was really cool.  Everybody has heard Somebody To Love, which is a song my son has heard recently and really digs it (he heard it on the Jim Carey movie, The Cable Guy).

But the song Coming Back To Me was brilliant.  That's the Golden Pell winner.  But barely, 'cause I really liked Eastern Jam by Country Joe and the Fish.  But I also really liked the song directly after Eastern Jam.  But I  missed the title and artists.  Maybe you can set me straight on that one.
