ROCKOLLECTIONS: JOHN AND MARY PT.4 CONCLUSION

Now THAT above is the proper way to check into a Hotel, more likely a Motel, lol!
It's Celebrate Your Name, The Finale- and we've had John and Mary as surrogates for all of us.
Just finished Mary, so I will conclude this short Series with John.
Beginning with a set of tunes where the name John or Johnny is not in the Song Title, but he is the Protagonist!
After that, I decided to play one for ME (but isn't that what I always do?)
It's a song I hadn't heard or played in Decades, and it sure was great to hear it!
To close it all out, a Rocked-Up Traditional Folk Song about giving up Alcohol, Booze, Hootch, Moonshine, etc.!
And just a little bit of a very very odd B-side to a hit single in 1967.
I LOVE 1967!
There are so many songs left over, we'll have to check and see how John and Mary are doing at some future date.
This Series was a LOT of fun for me.
I hope it was half as much for you!

Jon,

I don't know WHO the Sausage King is.

I just called Jimmy Dean that on a whim.

Maybe it is that guy I never heard of that you mentioned, lol!

And you knew about the Barleycorn.

Well stick around my man, the Professor still has plenty to teach, LOL!

RJ,
Well that opening set was pretty well known, and it took up a good portion of the episode.
And a real good batting order to start off the lineup with, lol!
You thought of Bad Company which means again you are thinking like me- I was waiting for the right moment.
I also thought of and could have played the Eagles- New Kid In Town has "Johnny Come-Lately".
But that's not a real name for a person, besides I was tight for time.
Maybe if I go back to John & Mary someday.
Funny, I was always touched by that Jimmy Dean song too when I was a kid.
Maybe because we wanted to grow up to be heroes.
Funny line:  I bet Big Bad John would have liked Jimmy Dean sausage...hahahahaha!
Agreed!
I had to play the Shirelles- as I said that one was for me, again going back to when I was a kid.
I don't know if people believe me, but that song I first heard in the late 60's and loved it- it had already been a hit years before.
But with all that wonderful NEW music around me in the 60's, I completely enveloped myself in ALL music, inspired by those great knowledgeable free-form DJ's!
I went back and listened to the 50's, some of which I knew as Oldies, much I discovered to be fantastic!
Ah...it's a long story, lol!
So the Golden Pell goes to Traffic for John Barleycorn (and I have my own now, lol).
All things considered, that was the best song of the lot!
But you had never heard it before?
That's why I didn't think it would win it, I am very surprised.
I shouldn't be that way, and I know it, but it always shocks me when somebody doesn't know a song I know like the back of my hand, lol!
Just another of my MANY faults!
Thanks for listening and writing, from that Golden Pell Winner for himself,
Mike

Oh yeah, I knew about alcohol and John Barleycorn, so I didn't learn something new with that. Shucks!

Nope, never knew the Sausage King did that song. And I always thought the Sausage King was Abe Froman. I learned something new!

Jon,
Maybe you have classy taste, which is very iffy at times, but don't take credit for John Barleycorn.
It was one of the first John songs I thought of...without you.
In fact, I hated to see it written by you in an earler comment...tipping my hand, lol!
I like to sneak up!
With The Devil Went Down To Georgia, I just played the nearest one to me.
And with the Female groups, I was just naming some...Bananarama came to mind.
You may find this hard to believe, but the show is NOT scripted, lol!
You're right, I could have done better in my naming, but no second chances...keep a live feel to the show.
You never knew the Jimmy Dean song?
And he is the same guy who later became The Sausage King.
I didn't gloss over the St. Paddy's Day parade, I just knew the show would be broadcast after it and if I talked about it too much they wouldn't care anyway.
Only reason I mentioned it is to let people feel like the are a guest in my home- nice folksy feel to the show.
Not ashamed but very proud- and if I said more I would have had to cut John Barleycorn, lol!
Did you know that John Barleycorn meant booze?
Thanks for listening and writing, it's nice to get fairly reasonable comments from you, lol!
Back on the meds!

Much more well known stuff in this episode.

Charlie Daniels Band, Bad Company and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  That's a nice combination.  That Bad Co. song crossed my mind yesterday.  I was wondering why you hadn't played it, now I know.

Love the Jimmy Dean song.  Haven't heard it in quite a while, but it almost made me cry as a child.  I bet Big Bad John would have liked Jimmy Dean sausage.

The Shirelles were okay, but the Golden Pell goes to Traffic for John Barleycorn.  I've never heard it until now.  Very nice tune.

Ok, this one was the best because you played what I said you should play: John Barleycorn! I have classy taste!

I was wondering which cut of "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" you would play. Would it be the am edit? The fm version? Son of a gun. Look what you did!

Female groups: The Supremes, Shangri-La's and........Bananarama? Not that I have an issue with that last one, but.....BANANARAMA? Thought you would have brought up The Runaways, Go-Go's, Tha Bangles...NOT Bananarama. Funny stuff!

Is that really Jimmy Dean The Sausage King? Sounds like him, but I never knew he did this song.

You kinda glossed over the St Patty's Day parade, you ashamed or something?
