ROCKOLLECTIONS: MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL PT.3

Heading back out west for the Monterey Pop Festival in the Summer Of Love 1967, let’s have some Buffalo Springfield.
The best way to have your buffalo!
Monterey was full of firsts. The first multi-cultural concert, with both established and new acts.
It was Jimi Hendrix’s first exposure here, and the first racially mixed, primarily white, audience for Otis Redding- who became a Pop Sensation as a result.
But most importantly, all these disparate artists got to MEET each other. And they got the feeling that something big was about to happen to popular music.
The times they were a-changin’!
Funny, but I always thought the 1st version of the classic Hey Joe was done by the Leaves (I said SEEDS in the show- sorry!).
Followed closely by the great band, Love.
It has come to my attention that the Byrds introduced that song to the world.
So we’ll hear that, and another one about President Kennedy preceeded and followed by a self-indulgent rant from, I think, Roger McGuinn on the JFK assassination.
It’s ok Roger, I still think the world of you!
We’ll hear Country Joe & The Fish stoned- at least I hope they are stoned- nobody could be that bad clear-headed, lol!
Back to Hendrix for his literally fiery version of Wild Thing- and it has always brought a smile to my face when about halfway through, he references Frank Sinatra’s Strangers In The Night.
Listen for it.
For the record, Monterey was the first Rock & Roll Benefit Concert.
And it was the first huge, outdoor concert with a new, innovative sound system.
Must have been nice to be there that weekend.
And it only cost a buck!

Jon,
That IS curious!
I slipped into a time warp, lol!
He WAS Jim before changing to Roger, I don't know exactly when, but if I weren't so lazy I'd look it up for you.
But then, what would you do? Sit around dropping acid?
I mean...DO I HAVE TO DO ALL THE WORK AROUND HERE?
Whew...I slipped into one of your rants there, LOL!
But he was Jim and then Roger a few years later.
Real answer!
Hey, maybe I should have played Rainmaker and come back and corrected myself?
But I didn't realize I had said that at the time, and Engineer Ken either didn't notice or never said anything.
That Hey Joe was by the Byrds- who seemingly were the FIRST to ever do it (not that version however).
Country Joe & Fish were stoned out of their minds, lol!
Well, that thing about the 4 shooters (as opposed to the six-shooters I like) by I assume ROGER Mc Guinn (it isn't identified as to who is talking), he seems to mistakenly have thought it was going to be on TV because he saw the cameras filming things.
But it was for the movie Monterey Pop, never intended for TV.
An excellent movie I recommend if you can see it.
And honestly, I don't remember if that weird conspiracy rap is in it or not.
Thanks for writing, and especially for listening so closely...you took me to task there, lol,
Mike

Curious..why did you call him Jim Mcguinn on the show? Believe that's his real name, but why Jim and not Roger? Or was it because he was Jim then and Roger a few years later? Real question!!!!

And I must have missed it, but who did that version of Hey Joe? It was kind of punkish.

CJ&TF was out there. Waaaay out there. But I didn't have to much of a problem with it, probably because you introduced it with a warning?

And nice with the Strangers In The Night!

4 shooters?????? Didn't he see the movie "JFK"? And was this and CJ&TF edited from TV?

Lots of questions! All real!!!!
