ROCKOLLECTIONS: SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2012 PT.1

That picture of the remarkable statue was taken by me not long ago.
It is prominently displayed at St. Ephrem's R.C. Church, about a mile or so from where I live in Brooklyn, an area with traditional values and a long memory.
To be honest, I was quite surprised to see September 11th falling on a Tuesday this year- man, I gotta check the calendar more closely and often!
That's the day of the show, when it is broadcast terrestrially over the airwaves.
And those airwaves fell silent for months after Sept. 11, 2001 because our transmitter, like so many others, was atop the fallen World Trade Center.
But sometimes hastily assembled shows turn out very well.
I hope that is the case here.
In this Part One, I decided to go right into a couple of things to start the show, because they seemed so much better than anything I could have said to begin.
Following that, it was time to at least acknowledge the aggression I always feel on this day, with songs that in a way share that feeling inside me...probably not the intention at all of the songwriters.
It is a balancing act that I juggle each year providing you with a thoughtful show or shows for 9/11, all the while dealing with and attempting to hide the seething anger that comes with this still sensitive subject and day.
And talking about things, along with music to soothe the savage beast, can sometimes help in that department.
So then I'll have some music for you that might be the proper, charitable way to think on this solemn day.
It will be interesting later today to hear if any of this is censored at the over-the-air place- but for you, the complete presentation in its entirety.
I make no apologies, bow to no one, I am just being me.
Using music again as my personal Western Union to deliver a message.
At the very least, in this opener and the second half of the show to come, you will get to know me better.

Great show Mike. There's really nothing more to say, every song you played was wonderful (yes, even Springsteen)

Last month we went to the Pennsylvania site, if anyone hasn't, it's quite something to see.

What a great show today brother.  That was such a terrible day.  It took 10 years to get the mastermind, but we got him.  You should do a show about getting the bad guys maybe.

I thought everything you played was very nice.  And Scott was right about everything he said, except the last sentence.

Two songs really stood out to me, so they will share the Golden Pell.  It's World Gone Crazy by Gary Fletcher and Empty Sky by The Boss.  Now that's two songs I'd love to have (hint, hint).  The lyrics of the latter are terrific, as is the acoustic accompaniment of the former.

And an absolute honorable mention for Firefighter Mike Moran.  What an incredible speech.

I would send you a great song called Heaven Nine Eleven by Tesla, but I'm pretty sure I sent it to you either last year or the year before.

Scott,
Yes it came as quite a shock to me it being on a Tuesday, but now I am glad as it made me think of songs I have never played for the 9/11 shows before.
Incredible story about your Mom and Sis, North Carolina to Idaho is a drive and a half, but infinitely more desirable than boarding a plane that day.
And they were seemingly just minutes away from doing just that.
I have my own stories, but today I don't have the energy to tell them.
Suffice it to say that here in NYC, over time time the events of that day worked its way to all of our doors, as we all knew it would...everybody knew somebody.
That David Roth song is the best in the half hour, so a worthy recipient of the Golden Pell.
Although Dar Williams ad a few others were worthy contenders.
As for me, screw it...I would have given it to Mike Moran!

Nice show... loved the emotion, pain, anger and fight that you got across in the lyrics of these tracks!

In picking those songs with the proper lyrics, I feel all those emotions myself...but what the hell, that's nothing!
Much more to come, and thanks for the good word,
Mike

Just hit me that it was Tuesday as well...

Was taking my Mother and Sister to the Raleigh airport that morning, got them as far as their gate and the airport went black, all monitors were off and an eerie silence ensued with no information coming forth for about 30 minutes or so.  Meanwhile the runway was filling up with planes rapidly as flight diversions from Baltimore were landing with no gates to pull into...  Thankfully they never were allowed to board their plane or were in the air..  We drove back to Charlotte and waited until a rental car was available and they drove home from there.  North Carolina to Idaho...

Nice show... loved the emotion, pain, anger and fight that you got across in the lyrics of these tracks!

Golden Pell goes to the acoustic track from David Roth, nice stuff...
