ROCKOLLECTIONS: SPRING HAS SPRUNG PT.2

Well, I start a Series on Spring, and suddenly it starts to feel like it, lol!
I'll begin this episode with a couple of Harmony Songs, and who does that better than the Beach Boys?
Something from their latest album, which by the way is outstanding!
After that, I will go very Old Progressive FM Radio DJ on you, if you were tuning in...oh, say in the early 1970's!
Except for a very small group of people, I am sure I will be introducing you to these three songs in a row that deal with our Spring topic- it's very doubtful you would have heard all three before this set.
But it is a good example of what Free-Form FM Radio was like before computerized playlists!
That is my biggest joy with this show, pulling out those forgotten or never heard songs.
To close, I'll just throw up my hands and give in.
Let It Be Spring- It Might As Well!
Enjoy the Show, the Music and the Weather.

Jon,
It's the Nice Jon AGAIN...be still my heart, lol!
Wow, you really did like this, and please read what I wrote to RJ.
So you thought the Bruce Cockburn song was the absolute standout.
You'r probably right, although the Sunshine Company does it for me too...as well as the McKendree Spring one.
Guess that was one helluva set!
And it just came so organically- I knew the Beach Boys would start and Henry Gross would follow, but after that I didn't have a clue.
I should mention I was happy with the closer too, that moody, jazzy version of another American standard by Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto.
I appreciate your persistence and loyalty Jon, interrupted 3 times and all but hung in there to listen.
I like this quote of yours, "Really, I liked all the songs. Not just trying to make you feel good, because that's not how I am!"
Hey, you may be Nice Jon now, but nobody expects you to be THAT nice...hahahahaha!
Thanks as always for the listen and writing,
Mike

RJ,
That Beach Boys album, That's Why God Made The Radio, is surprisingly excellent, give it a listen if you can- I can't believe how good they sound and most of the songs are first-rate.
Yes that Henry Gross followup Springtime Mama was intentional because of the Beach Boys sound.
Nice going and good memory, Shannon was his big hit- that was the less successful followup with unmistakeable Beach Boys influence.
And this IS a first for the Golden Pell, for a full segment or block of songs.
It is so strange, that was the set I was most concerned about with listeners...or as concerned as I ever get, lol!
Wasn't sure if they could get their heads into it, not one of those songs was remotely a hit!
But that set did have a feel about it as it was coming to me- similar, kinda mellow, interesting lyrics- it just flowed.
I may have confused you, if I am not confused myself, lol!
That set from the 60's and early 70's went this way:
Spring- McKendree Spring 1973
Springtime Meadow- Sunshine Company 1968
Spring Song- Bruce Cockburn 1970 .
And Cockburn, (how'd you like to go through life with that name, I'd pronounce it COBURN too, lol?), a Canadian like Lightfoot, does play acoustic guitar almost as good as Gordon!
Many of his songs have a very spiritual quality to them that sneaks up on you.
Like that one about renewal...and coming so closely after Easter.
Well I must say I am very very happy you enjoyed that block of music.
It's a testimony to your openness to all kinds of Music, and love for it!
Thanks as always for the listen and writing,
Mike

I like this one as much as the first one. The Bruce Cockburn song was the absolute standout. Incredible stuff. There wasn't a dud to be found here, liked them all.

Now, I could go into more detail, but I listened to this show three times within the last 24 hours. Kept getting interrupted but I kept listening. Really, I liked all the songs. Not just trying to make you feel good, because that's not how I am!

I like the start of this show.  That Beach Boys song was good.  And great choice for a follow up.  It was quite reminiscent of the Beach Boys.  But you say it was Henry Gross.  I've only heard one other song by Henry Gross (Shannon).  I like that song a lot.  This one ain't bad either.

Here's a first for the Golden Pell (I think).  I'm giving it to a full segment or block of songs, if you will.  Springtime Mama, Spring and Springtime Meadows were all terrific songs.  And they all just fit together so well, all with a very similar sound.  I had a hard time distinguishing the lyrics on  the first and third song of that trio.  Especially the last song by Bruce Coburn.  But the acoustic guitar work on that last song was incredible.  I'm not familiar with him.  Does he play the guitar as well as sing?  Either way, that's three outstanding tunes right there.

Good work bud.
