ROCKOLLECTIONS: VOL.5- ODDS AND ENDS PT.1

Time for a Personal Day.
I like these because I say to myself, let’s really go free-form and see what happens.
Some Odds & Ends I hope you are ready for, as I am unfettered even by a Theme.
And I'm Ready!
As I was playing the first Set, the album title of one of the songs reminded me of Alan Freed.
Further, something triggered a memory of him being born in December.
Turned out I was right- Dec. 15th, 1921.
He's the legendary DJ from the early 1950's, and the man who supposedly gave Rock & Roll its name!
I say supposedly about things like that, since I found out Abner Doubleday didn't invent Baseball, lol!
But Freed made many contributions to Our Music, as he played Blues and Rhythm & Blues Artists on his show, and caused some uproar over it.
He also held racially integrated concerts when that was something very much out of the ordinary.
He was hugely successful first in Cleveland, then New York City, before the Payola Scandal claimed him as a casualty.
There are many Rock songs about him or connected to him, and I'll be playing some in tribute.
And they will NOT all be from the 50's.
Trust me, I think you will enjoy this Part One!

Jon,
As to you being fine, you may get some arguments about that, lol!
I like it, but I have to admit 12 degrees is cold.
Hahahahahaha...and you're wearing shorts outside!
It's all boogie woogie woogie...alright now, pop a Beatle pill and calm down.
A snobby reviewer trashed Mark Knoplfer's geetar playing eh?
You know, sometimes they feel more important if they criticize rather than praise.
Oh no, again...a theme of boogie oogie woogie doo, lol!
I am ashamed to say I have never seen American Hot Wax- don't know why.
A friend mentioned that flick too.
Very good concise explanation of the the payola scandal.
As I've said before, you're a good writer.
Nice stream of consciousness style, similar to the way I play music.
But always bizarrely funny, lol!
Thanks for the listen and writing,
Mike

RJ,
Man, I got everybody giving me weather reports, lol!
The day I was referring to was Friday around 10 or 11 AM- nice weather to record a show here.
And today we had some beautiful snow!
The same thing happened to me as you mentioned- the Blues, as we age, comes to be appreciated more I guess because we all have had things to get the Blues over!
And I'm with you, the Muddy Waters one was best to me too, but I liked them all.
Jon has a very good explanation of the payola scandal.
Interesting that DJ's were able to pick their own music back then, then it was taken away from them until the short Free-Form period of the late 60's that I still do.
And of course it was taken away again, so you have what you have today.
But someone is always responsible for what gets played- and THEY are still open to bribes...or Payola!
Neil Young can really say it sometimes, can't he, lol?
Love the Sultans Of Swing- can't remember now, but was that the first big song they had, our introduction to them?
Dire Straits is not just a cool band name, I may change MY name to it, lol!
And a Classic Pell awarded to Dire Straits for Sultans Of Swing.
Nice choice.
Although I would have awarded a Golden Pell to Cashman & West.
But that's what makes us non-boring, lol!
Thanks for the listen and writing,
Mike

Jon wears shorts and sleeveless half shirts in 12 degree weather.

I'm fine.

It's balmy outside. Some people might say it's cold because it's 12 degrees outside, but they're wrong. Doesn't stop me from wearing shorts outside. Those that bundle up are just plain silly. Plus there's snow on the ground. That's MY weather, deal with it any way you like.

It's all boogie woogie woogie! The boogie woogie bugle boy from Company B!

I remember a review in Rolling Stone regarding Dire Straits' first album, where the reviewer trashed Mark Knoplfer's geetar playing, basically saying he sucked. Didn't make sense. I don't make sense. Nothing makes sense.

But there IS a theme here, a theme of boogie oogie woogie doo. Don't you notice that? Maybe not a theme to you, but a theme to me.

Actually, I have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm just typing stuff.

What was that Alan Freed movie, "American Hot Wax"? Yeah, I think so. Good movie.

For those that don't know (Rjhog, duh), the payola scandal was where dj's were accepting cash to play certain records from record companies. Maybe they got drugs too. And liquor. And women (or men). And cars. And shiny pens. And brand new ties, because everyone wore ties back then. And lifetime subscriptions to The Saturday Evening Post and Grit magazines.

I read a few issues of The Saturday Evening Post when I was a kid. It was interesting, remember one issue with Cary Grant on the cover. He was old then. Never read Grit, could never find it. Depressing.

It's rainy, somewhat cold and extremely foggy in East Georgia today.  Just a nasty Monday.

I used to have absolutely no love for the blues, but as I have aged, I have come to appreciate it much more. Still not my favorite genre, but it's cool these days.  I liked Muddy Waters version best, at least I think I got the order right.

Neil Young song was cool.  What was the payola scandal????

Oh yeah, Sultans Of Swing, great song.  That's some sweet pickin' right there.  Especially the outro guitar solo.  And isn't Dire Straits just a cool band name?

And some Doo-Wop to close the show.

No Golden Pell this week.  It's a Classic Pell awarded to Dire Straits for Sultans Of Swing.
