Classic Rock Bottom

Continuing with our exploration of the music by the Kingston Trio, I will open with a song that is still to this day their most requested- and yet it never cracked the Top 40 as a single.
Coupled with a story of my friend Dan’s visit to Scotland.
Oh yeah, you can tell he is a friend of mine, lol!
Then the saga of two songs, same music.
There was a Bob Dylan song I knew very well from before I was able to LEGALLY drink!
When I was legal and in an Irish bar, I heard someone singing an IRA song about what we called the “troubles”, that had the same tune as that Dylan one, and I was annoyed that it had been ripped off.
As I later found out, I had it backwards, and Dylan was the thief, or let’s say, borrower.
This is serious music, as both are powerful and thought-provoking, both have traitors in them.
I’ll play a hit single by the Trio that has a lala title but is actually quite good.
Then a song they did, that I first heard in its Top 40 hit form by someone else- and by him a contender for Worst Song Ever Made, lol!
The Kingstons perform it in a much more palatable way.
To end this chapter, I wanted to go out with my very favorite Kingston Trio song.
Now I had told Engineer Ken what it was before the show, but by the end he had forgotten.
The ensuing confusion is kind of funny.
Actually, I had a LOT of fun with all these Kingston Trio shows- and it made me fun.
You’ll hear that, it shows!
To be continued…

I'll agree with Jon...and go even further and say I actually like Terry Jacks' version of Seasons In The Sun.

Oh no, say it ain't so bro...you actually LIKE it?
You need to go in for a tuneup, lol!
I didn't know he mentioned a cheating wife either, but I can't bring myself to listen it to it to find out for sure, lol!
All I need to know is the Kingston Trio do say it.
I'll take that Golden Pell for Bob Dylan's With God On Our Side- that goes way back to 1964 with The Times They Are A-Changin' album, while I and most others were listening to the Beatles and unaware.
Brilliant song, as are most on that LP.
The song that is my favorite and I saved for last is Worried Man- I had heard it before, but in the 60's it just grabbed me.
You enjoyed this one, so I am doing my job and you are coming along nicely, lol!
Thanks for risking the listen and writing,
Mike

Mike,

I'll agree with Jon...and go even further and say I actually like Terry Jacks' version of Seasons In The Sun.  But I must say I never realized he mentioned a cheating wife.  How 'bout that?

Golden Pell goes to Bob Dylan.  I really like that song, aside from the fact that it is 58 minutes long.

The "berry" song was also pretty good, as was the song you called your favorite and saved for last.

I enjoyed this bro.

Jon,
Definitely their interpretation is poppier, can't say happier because the dude is dying for chrissakes, lol!
Terry Jacks' version is beyond morbid, it is horrid.
I run from the room screaming, but you are strong enough to listen...what a guy, lol!
Great choices by you that I had erased from my brain- although The Streak isn't such a bad memory.
Pac Man Fever, OUCH!!!
Guess that's what makes us unique individuals.
But Kung Fu Fighting is universally brutal...hahahahaha!
Thanks for the listen and writing, got more for you coming,
Mike

Still digging this! However, their version of "Seasons In The Sun" seems a bit more "happy", I guess. Faster paced, definitely. Terry Jacks' version is so morbid. It's a sad listen, but I don't think it's the worst song ever....

The ones that immediately pop into my mind are "Pac Man Fever" and "The Streak". And "Kung Fu Fighting " is definitely among the worst.
