Like Scott's offering last week, these two artists are on totally opposite ends of the spectrum. You know what you get with Slash, Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. First Aid Kit is a Swedish Folk band. Klara and Johana Soderberg are sisters and this is their debut album. No, it's not rock, it's folk, but sometimes we step outside the box. Please note that the second track from the First Aid Kit and possibly some of the Slash tracks contain profanity (I've only listened to Slash once and I remember hearing some, but I can't remember which songs), so use ear phones.

Slash (feat who and whatever)--Thumbs WAY DOWN for the shytty "singing"
Wow. THis starts of really nice and then the singing starts and it is horrible. It's like a mixture of inhaled helium, and somebody shaking him while he sings thru his nose. He sings like shyt. You know what was the best song on their last album? The one that featured Fergie. Believe it. This singing is shytty to the max. He can't even hit a high note when he's even "singing" gibberish. The geetar™ is ok, but this shytty excuse for a singer has got to go. It's close to unlistenable. The last song starts of like a Xmas song and then there Myles and he's singing in a lower octave, but I have faith he'll suck in some helium, but now he's whispering? AND THERE IT IS!!!! Poor Slash, Myles must have some incriminating photos.
First Aid Kit--Thumbs Up
Don't know if it's backlash from the shytty vocals from that first album in this set, but this is a breath of fresh air. Mellow, to be sure, maybe a little bit country, but still nice and relaxing. No autotune which is also way cool. The lead singer sounds like someone else, I just can't put my finger on who though. Someone from the 80's, I think. Still, this is really quite good.
As much as it pains me, and it really pains me, I have to agree with Jon on the vocals. I like Kennedy and the style he sings with in Alter Bridge, but I do not like the nasally whine that he sings with for Slash. And there is a difference.
SLASH ... "Eh"
I've read the scathing reviews so far. And while I understand the points made the comments did lower my expectations... severely. TO that end it was better than what I thought, that was until the unholy came on. yuck! 4 out of 5 tracks were musically quite nice, and I hear the issues noted with Kennedys vocals. Not sure why they went that direction either, but they did, and that will save me some cabbage as this isn't going to make it into my collection
FIRST AID KIT ... Two thumbs slightly up
Really like that first track. I'm a sucker for that style of acoustic work though. It worked again the second song. But I have to wonder if it would start wear a bit thin on more than these two... Cedar Lane is nice, a bit out of my comfort zone since it feels like it walking a country line and the vocals are real good but a little weird with chorus. And the vocal changes continue in the Waitress Song. Actually like Long Time Ago. Cool find boss!! But not a purchase for me
People seem to either really like Myles, or really detest his vocals. I think he is excellent. Maybe he is trying to be too Axl-ish??? Maybe, just maybe...that is what Slash wants from him? Maybe it's what Slash asks him to do? Dont know. Either way, Myles is one hard working musician, between all the Alter Bridge and Slash albums and tours. Does he ever take a break? I like this new one. Think it's really good, and with 17 tracks, you sure get more than your monies worth. And I understand (I guess) someone not liking his voice, but to say he can't hit a high? He can and does hit high range octaves all the time. He has great range, whether you like him or not.
Now this First Aid Kit? At first, I was n't even going to listen. But I did, and I'm glad I did. It is very mellow, but still very melodic and somewhat of a "peaceful" listen. Very enjoyable. Listening to the First Aid a second time now.
I do agree with you Gordon on Kennedy. My complaint is just that starting with the last Slash album and carrying over to this one, he sings very nasally. Maybe that's how Axl sang and you're right, maybe that's what Slash wants. But I don't hear that with the Alter Bridge albums. I totally dig his vocals there.
I am absolutely floored at your response to First Aid Kit. Absolutely floored!
Hey, I'm not always "loud, heavy, rude and obnoxious"!! The older I get, the more I appreciate excellent vocal work. It's more than just singing and writing lyrics. You have to come up with melodies and harmonies that fit and work with the music. I would not buy this, unless I just stumbled across it, but it is enjoyable. A good NMC, with two very different styles.
