VOTW - KATE PIERSON

I fell in love with Kate Pierson back in 1989, when I heard (and saw the video to) Love Shack. The following year or two, it only made it better/worse, when I heard her singing on first a song by Iggy Pop and then one by R.E.M. Eventually I bought an album by B-52's, in 1992, I think it was. There're only a handfull of female singers in rock/pop, that I truely respect, and Pierson is definitely one of them. Wiki: Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" Pierson (born April 27, 1948) is an American vocalist, lyricist, and one of the lead singers and founding members of The B-52's. A multi-instrumentalist, she plays guitar, bass and various keyboard instruments. In the B-52s, she has performed alongside Cindy Wilson, Fred Schneider, Ricky Wilson, and Keith Strickland. In February 2015, Pierson released her first solo album, Guitars and Microphones, featuring material co-written by Sia Furler. She later released the non-album single Don't Sting The Bee, and on April 15th 2016 she released a cover of the single Venus. Pierson was born in Weehawken, New Jersey and raised in Rutherford. She is the owner of Kate's Lazy Desert in Landers, California and Kate's Lazy Meadow in Mount Tremper, New York, a rustic modern lodge in New York's Catskill Mountains. She operates the businesses with her partner, Monica Coleman, whom she has been with since 2003(oh, well) On August 3, 2015, Pierson married Coleman in a ceremony attended by the B-52's, singer Sia Furler and Furler's husband, Erik Anders Lang.

B-52's - PRIVATE IDAHO

"Private Idaho" is a single released by The B-52's from their album Wild Planet. The single was their second Billboard Hot 100 chart entry, at #74. The single also peaked at #5 on the US Hot Dance Club Play, along with previous single "Give Me Back My Man" and "Party out of Bounds", both from Wild Planet."Private Idaho" reached number 11 in Australia. It was the 83rd biggest Australian hit of 1980.Gus Van Sant used the song title for his movie My Own Private Idaho which he heard while visiting the state in the early 1980s.The song was featured in the Adam Sandler movie The Wedding Singer.

B-52's - LOVE SHACK

"Love Shack" is a single by pop-rock band The B-52's. Originally released in 1989 from their album Cosmic Thing, the single was the band's biggest hit song and first million-copy seller. It was also the band's first song to reach the Billboard Top 40 charts, peaking at number 3, also reaching number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, and was number 1 for eight weeks in Australia, number 1 for 4 weeks in New Zealand, number 1 in the Republic of Ireland and also number 1 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart.Produced by Don Was, the song's inspiration was a cabin around Athens, Georgia, complete with tin roof, where the band conceived "Rock Lobster", a single from their first album; it is often said to have been located off "the Atlanta Highway", as the first verse implies. B-52's singer Kate Pierson lived in the cabin in the 1970s, and the cabin existed until 2004, when it burned down. "Tin roof...rusted," wailed by lead singer Cindy Wilson, was originally an outtake added to the track, and is perhaps the song's most memorable line. Fred Schneider also provides some memorable lines, including his notable boast of having a Chrysler that is "as big as a whale" and "seats about twenty". It has come to mean many things to different listeners.

IGGY POP & KATE PIERSON - CANDY

"Candy" is a song by Iggy Pop from his ninth solo album, Brick by Brick. The song is a duet with Kate Pierson of The B-52's, and was released as the album's second single in September 1990. The song became the biggest mainstream hit of Pop's career, as he reached the US Top 40 chart for the first and only time.

REM & KATE PIERSON - SHINNY HAPPY PEOPLE

"Shiny Happy People" is a song by the band R.E.M. The song appeared on their 1991 album Out of Time and was released as a single in the same year. The song features guest vocals by Kate Pierson of the B-52's, who also appears in the song's music video. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, the fourth and last R.E.M. single to reach the top 10 on the chart. It also peaked at No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the first R.E.M. song to reach the top ten in the UK and the only one to reach the top ten in both countries. It was recorded during the autumn of 1990, and was first released as a single in May 1991 in the UK. However, the single would not go on sale in the U.S. until four months later.

KATE PIERSON - GUITARS AND MICROPHONES

Guitars and Microphones is the debut studio solo album by Kate Pierson of The B-52s. It was released in February 2015 under Lazy Meadow Music.

PRIVATE IDAHO ...  I'm a born and raised Idahoan, there's not a single one of us who haven't heard this song and thought, What the hell was that!!  And not a single one of us that if we heard it again it woudl be too soon!  If I had a dollar for every time I been asked if I lived in my own Private Idaho I would have retired by now...

I went to school in Athens, Georgia, and The B-52's were a pretty big deal around that area.  That being said, I was never the slightest fan.  That being said:

PI -I have never heard this song.  I actually like it.  It's certainly retro, and these guys and gals are a trip to look at.  That hairdo is enormous.  I've never been to Idaho, but this song kind of makes me wanna go there someday, even if it's just to dig up a few potatoes.

LS - I feel about this song the same way Scott feels about PI.  If I never hear it again, it will be too soon.  It was played a LOT in Athens when I was in school and out at the bars, and it never failed to make people lose their minds.  I don't remember it being such an aggravating song when the drinks were flowing.  But alas, the video doesn't work in this country, therefore I'm off the hook.

C - Not a fan of Iggy (although I did give him a shot with his latest album).  Strange, I've never heard this although it was a Top 40 hit.  Maybe because it was 1990 and I did not listen to Top 40 radio back then.  I actually think this is a pretty good song and a really good performance by both artists.

SHP - Gee whiz, another song that has always grated on me.  It's just too darn happy.  But I do enjoy Peter Buck's originality with his guitar playing, and Stipe is a very good vocalist.  These guys were kind of a big deal in Athens too. Funny thing here is that the song didn't annoy me tonight like it normally does.  One day I'm gonna dive into the REM catalog...one day.

GAM - It seems like this album was featured in NMC.  Either way, I can't say this song does anything for me positively or negatively.  It's just a song.  I do think the video is cool.  Is it an official video from her?  I'm guessing it is.

Not a bad listen this week.  A bit of nostalgia (although some of it negative) for me.  I have to say overall I enjoyed it!

My hometown, the very south end of town...

LOVE SHACK ...  Mercifully this video is not available in the USA and I won't be seeking out a version that does play.  I don't like the B-52's, its really that simple.

ICKY POOP ... I recently purchased some Uriah Heep remasters because RJ posted a freaking great album by them, so I fortified my collection a bit, I say this because now Amazon thinks that these purchases equate to Iggy Pop album recommendations.  Thats just sick and wrong! Thankfully theres that wonderful little "Not Interested" check box.  Im going to pretend that check box is next to this video also.... *click*

I just posted a MAD songs playlist maybe I will come back and finish this off a bit later...

REM ...  Well at least this puts a smile on my face.  Really not as terrible as some say it is, though silly and really too happy and shiny, it may be the only song I like her on.  And it comes off a strong album, IMO.
