Classic Rock Bottom

Disclaimer: All info that does not reside in my brain is gathered from wikipedia.com (mostly because Jon can't stand it) unless otherwise noted.

In 1983, the English band Yes released their eleventh studio album, entitled 91025.  Little did they know that 34 years later, that album would be immortalized on the web pages of Classic Rock Bottom.  Yes, all these years later, almost seven years after this site was created, I'm featuring my first Yes album as Album of the Week. You see, I was going to feature Billy Idol's Rebel Yell.  But I was sitting on the beach this past weekend and something told me to punch this album up on the old iPod.  I did, and it was quite incredible.  I listened again that night with my Bose head phones, and the music just jumped off of the hard drive.  So I shifted my pick to Yes.

90125 was a very successful album for the band.  It topped out at number 5 in the U.S.  That's good enough to tie for the third highest charting album in the band's long career.  Triple Platinum sales level makes it the best selling studio album for the band.  Several singles were released, but Owner of a Lonely Heart was pretty massive.  It became the one and only number 1 for the band on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, also topping the U.S. Rock Chart.  In addition, Cinema won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

I remember hearing Owner of a Lonely Heart many, many times back in the day, and every time I hear it now I immediately think of the movie The Break-Up.  Vaughn and Anniston are great, but John Michael Higgins telling Gary to "come-come with the kick drum" just slays.  Also, when listening to it at the beach, the song Changes just blew me away.  That is a tremendous song and just begs to be heard on a great set of ear phones.  It Can Happen also continues to this day to get a lot of air time on classic rock radio.

I have the regular version of the album which can be had for 5 bucks on Amazon, but there is an expanded version that commands a higher premium as well.

And I also want to thank all the great Facebook folks who played along and used the clue "I recommend a nice set of ear phones...and I'm thinking a handful of digits" to venture a guess.  Alex Hunter was the first to come up with the correct answer, but a grand total of 6 folks went with the same guess.  My clues must be too easy lately, but either way it's fun, fun, fun.

Side One:

1. Owner of a Lonely Heart

2. Hold On

3. It Can Happen

4. Changes

Side Two:

5. Cinema

6. Leave It

7. Our Song

8. City of Love

9. Hearts

2 great albums this week. Must be Christmas. Oh wait. It's Easter. Close enough.

I remember how much my cousin (a huge Yes fan) dreaded the day of the albums release. It Buggled [sic] his mind that the same guy who sing "Video Killed The Radio Star" replaced his favorite singer on Drama. (Strangely, he was OK with Downes) Then the news broke, that Howe left. He was ready to throw in the towel. He didn't know who Trevor Rabin was, nor did he care, at this point. I did. On both accounts. So I decided, I'm going to like this album regardless of how bad it's going to be... just to piss him off. His indifference cost him to learn the news that Horn will not sing, only produce the album and Jon Andersson was back. Then the first thing I heard on the Radio was "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", and I didn't have to pretend, I liked it. And so did he. He bought the album, I didn't, but we listened to it quite often.

Cinema winning the Grammy in the Instrumental category was a pleasant surprise and "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" has one of the most recognizable intros in Rock music. BTW, it was a dead giveaway when you said a pair of good headphones are in order to listen to the AOTW. I have the maxi-CD of the song with 4 versions and every time I come across a new headphone or earbuds this is the song I test them out.

Although, critics might not agree with me (perhaps the bands hard core fans, either) but for my money, 'Talk' is a much better album, with "I Am Waiting" being one of the greatest ballads I heard.

Drama is my favorite Yes album and I love Talk.

I would add Magnification to the list, I really like that album as well!

Have heard this album quite a bit thru the years and still really like it, it just never gets old to me. My favorite track is #8 because it kicks arse. The remaster is a must own, blows away the original release. For some reason, Big Generator has never received a remastered version here and that's a bummer. It's also a really good album but for a lot of people it was too "dark". They probably work for Disney and Build A Bear.

Take a step back, know your role and shut your mouth! yes albums have been "immortalized" on this site so you're nothing but a collusionist!!!!!!!!

Oh, and the video was a bit freaky.

I didn't say this was the first time they were immortalized here.  I just said it was the first one I have featured.

I listened to Big Generator last night.  BG and 90125 are the only Yes CD's I own, though I do have some vinyl. Anyway, I quite enjoyed BG too, so I might just have to pick up a couple more CD's.

Yes has been showcased in SHT as well!

He's really, really, REALLY late to the party.

SIGH.

Yup!  Next thing you know he'll be posting Supertramp and talking about how great they are now!

Then he'll post an album by an undiscovered band that he, well, discovered, some band from the 60's whose name can be confused with an ordinary lawn bug and it and them will be immortalized right here, on CRB. By Rjhog.

Or is it better stated this way...

Yes has been immortalized in SHT previously as well.

Well, if you say THAT, then I have no choice but to state that Yes has also been immortalized in L/F!!

But, no matter. Let Rjhog post your album in AOTW and..........

You guys should have thought to use a great line like that first.
